Standing up for those who cannot. Taking charge in the face of adversity. Loving who I love. Being honest. All of these things and countless memories are part of me now and I am a better person for having known her and lucky to be able to have called her Mom.

A hand massage after an all-nighter to get the big school assignment in. The sacrafices she made so you didn't. New clothes shopping for school. Lunch with the girls. Understanding that when my heart was broken I could not be still. A take-out container with your name and a heart on it because you worked through dinner.

The overexcited cheer during my first catch on the softball team. A discussion of if it's OK to go back to work now that your older. Mandatory swim lessons, lots of laughs and sleepovers that Mom made by having blueberry pancakes, bacon and fresh juice to treat your special guest. Late night pick ups for you and your entourage of friends.

In this year I have know unthinkable loss. I lost the woman who made this all possible. She was my first embrace, my biggest cheerleader, and my best friend, she was also my Mom and she was beautiful. She is a profound inspiration in life and in the grace that she handled her death. It's the little things you remember most.
