On March 25th, 2021, the world lost a scintillating and passionate young woman.  Selinde passed away from injuries sustained as a passenger in a vehicle accident at Richland-Furnace during her workday at the Ohio Division of Forestry. She left this world doing what she loved and believed in: Wildlands Firefighting and Forestry. She was surrounded at passage by her loving family and partner Kees. Soar high and far, beloved Lindy: so many hearts are with you.

The April 10th, 2021 Memorial is viewable at http://tinyurl.com/selinde,

A Memorial Fund has been established with donations from the community and Selinde's family.  The fund will be used to purchase an exception woodland parcel for the public to hike and enjoy as Selinde would have done.  For more information please go to the Athens Conservancy Selinde Roosenburg Memorial Fund at

Lindy was an excellent pie maker. She made pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving and other holidays, but her favorite pie to make was apple. Lindy gave pies as gifts and was especially happy when she made a pie for a Zaleski SF coworker’s birthday. She knew the gift of a homemade pie was precious.
Tomorrow is the anniversary of the UTV accident that killed Selinde. Let’s bundle up and share some pie this Saturday, in memory of Lindy. Meet at the parking lot across from the Hope Iron Furnace, at one end of the Selinde Roosenburg Memorial Backpack Trail. We will take a short hike as well. Date and time: Saturday March 23 1:30 pm
I apologize for the late message on this list. I forget that not everyone who cared about Selinde follows my FB page. If you can't make it tomorrow, make a pie and share it with your friends. Lindy would be delighted. ---- Kate

Lindy Roosenburg Preserve: Opening Celebration April 30

Please join us Sunday, April 30, at 1 pm for an opening celebration for the Lindy Roosenburg Preserve, Athens Conservancy’s newest nature preserve. This exceptional 71-acre property just north of Athens showcases mature forests, scenic rock formations, and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife. The land was purchased last year in memory of Selinde Roosenburg, a local young woman and aspiring wildland firefighter, through a fund generously established by her family.

Lindy’s Preserve is a scenic, well-maintained tract of land, with 1.5 miles of trails that meander through a peaceful forest.

The April 30 event will include a ribbon-cutting honoring Selinde, guided walks along the trails, live fiddle and folk music tunes, historical information and stories about the land, refreshments, and more.

Please note:
There will be no parking at the preserve itself on event day; see below for directions and parking details
For this opening event only, we ask that you leave your doggies at home.

Directions for Event: Lindy’s Preserve is near Chauncey on Sand Ridge Road (Twp. 324) and is labeled on Google Maps (https://goo.gl/maps/LCm6yYK6xtAmrCem7). Coming from Athens, take Columbus Rd. to SR-13 at the interchange of both with US-33. Go north 2.5 miles on SR-13 to Sand Ridge Road, and park at the Job & Family Services parking lot (see below). Coming from Columbus, exit US-33 at SR-682 (a left turn). In 0.9 mile, continue straight onto SR-13. About 1/4 mile later, SR-13 curves sharply right; about 1/3 mile beyond that curve, you’ll come to Sand Ridge Road. Park at the Job & Family Services parking lot.

Event Parking: Attendees should park at the Job & Family Services parking lot. The building is at 13183 OH-13 near where Sand Ridge Road intersects State Rt. 13. Watch for the yellow and black signs on event day! A van shuttle service from the parking area to the preserve will be provided on event day, beginning at 12:45 pm.

I can honestly say that hardly a day goes by without a thought of Selinde and her loving family. I remember so well the baby shower that Kate organized and hosted for Kelly Johnson in April 2000, more than a month before Leah was born. I was a little further behind with Freddie in belly. Kate was in labor throughout the afternoon party and insisted she was OK and go to the hospital in a bit. Selinde was clearly on the way and I think she did not want to miss the party.

We miss you!

Dear, dear girl. I loved being your violin teacher, and I love you. You surprised and delighted me every time we met. I have your senior picture in my music room where you smile peacefully at all my children and students.
To her family: I am so sorry I didnt know for so long. Lindy is, and always will be, the most original, incandescent, and loving person I've met. Thank you for sharing her with me, and bringing me into your lives. Heaps of love and prayers for peace.

The tragedy of Selinde’s passing doesn’t diminish
our relationships with her.

Let’s gather to tell stories of Lindy’s life, love, and laughter.

On Friday June 24th at 10:30 am (please note time change), ODNR will rename the backpacking trail at Zaleski State Forest in Selinde's honor. This is a public event to which all Selinde's friends and family are invited. The location of the dedication is Hope Schoolhouse, 27800 Wheelabout Rd, McArthur, OH 45651. Parking is limited, so we encourage people to carpool.

Afterwards, you might hike a part of the 28 mile trail from the Hope School House trailhead or from the trailhead across from Hope Iron Furnace at 27331 OH-278, McArthur, OH 45651. Parking at the latter trailhead is even more limited, but a short hike is more pleasant from that location.

In addition, you may visit the memorial white oak tree planted in ODNR’s Forest of Honor. In a private ceremony on April 9th, we spread some of Selinde’s ashes at the base of the tree, so that she might be part of its growth and long life into the future. The Forest of Honor is across the road from the Ranger Station Mound, Zaleski, OH 45698, a short distance from Hope Schoolhouse.

In the evening, everyone is welcome to join us for a potluck meal 6:30-8:30. We will provide Selinde’s favorite, Willem’s chili, and beverages. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Friends of the family are welcome to attend. Reach out to one of us if you need our home address.

After the meal we will make a big bonfire for Selinde’s peers to enjoy on their own after 9:30. Please bring stories, poems, songs, acoustic instruments, and any other way you might want to express your love for Lindy. Guests may camp near the fire or elsewhere on our property.

We had hoped to gather at the Athens Conservancy parcel to be purchased in memory of Lindy, however we have decided to postpone. The Athens Conservancy will announce a date when arrangements are made.

Please RSVP using the following google form.

I never imagined my life without you.

Full stop.

I imagined Willem retiring and declining.
I considered what your lives might be without me.
I’ve ached at the thought of Dirk hit, racing on his bicycle.
But I never imagined life without you, Lindy.

I imagined stories from far away Idaho.
Laughing about how conservative your neighbors were.
Chewing on a challenge of living on your own,
Or how Kees was looking for a job nearby.

I imagined you having kids,
Watching them pick cherry tomatoes like you did late summer
Teaching you all the things I didn’t know as a parent
Telling you “you’re a great mom, Lindy”

I imagined growing weary, maybe moving closer
Struggling with the feeling of being a burden to you
Wondering how to keep myself together so
As I declined you would not feel so sad.

But I never imagined life without you Lindy
Your laughter and quick wit
Your constant singing and finding songs on the guitar
Your texting me several times in rapid succession

Yes, it’s selfish. I want to be able to hug you,
But I also want to see you experience a full life
With satisfying work and healthy relationships
Feeling your heart full and your days tiring.

Listening to the frogs call in the dark of spring.

On Friday June 24th at 2pm, ODNR will rename the backpacking trail at Zaleski State Forest in Selinde's honor. Selinde's friends and family are invited. In the evening, we will host a potluck meal and bonfire at our place. Camping will be available. On Saturday the 23rd, we hope to gather at the Athens Conservancy parcel to be purchased in memory of Lindy. More details to follow.

With the anniversary of Lindy's death approaching (March 25th), I encourage you to be extra kind to yourself, make plans to be with friends, and take time outside, where Lindy was happiest.

Selinde took some fire pictures the day of the UTV accident. I will add them here.

Selinde was a lifelong swimmer. As a little kid she would dive into the tiny waves made by boats along the Patuxent River. She would swim in the pond below our house, even if it was icy cold. As she got older she wanted to swim in Athens after school, but the timing was difficult for us living out of town. When she got to eighth grade she signed up for swimming with the high school team and continued for a total of 5 seasons. Selinde went to State in relays and in one individual event. She also swam a few summers with a local team in St Michaels. She didn’t compete in college but continued to swim on her own at the OSU pool. She was not the best swimmer on the high school team, but she loved the feeling of moving through the water and competing with teammates.

Last weekend, December 4th, the Athens swimming community held the Selinde Roosenburg Memorial Invitational (previously the Athens Invitational). We are very grateful to Denise Humphreys, the coach of the Athens High School Swim Team, who suggested dedicating the Invitational to Lindy and quietly took every step necessary to fulfill this goal. Denise also made a moving statement about why the invitational was renamed in Lindy’s honor. While Selinde was not the top swimmer on the team, Denise said she excelled in what really matters: in her commitment to the team, in her desire to serve her community and in her enthusiasm for life. Denise told the attending swimmers “you don’t have to be the best to have an impact, you all have something to offer. Do it with commitment, service and enthusiasm and you will have a good life.” Afterward, Cara Sheets and Elena Musser, friends of Selinde’s from the swim team, sang the national anthem, as Selinde had done before. The Invitational had so many swimmers (>500) sign up parents and the general public could not attend.

We are deeply grateful to Denise and the Athens High School Athletic Department for honoring Selinde with powerful words and meaningful actions. We also are grateful to the Athens swim community for speaking Selinde’s name, remembering her best qualities, and making such a significant tribute to Lindy. We so appreciate Cara and Elena singing in memory of Lindy. We thank you all for this enormous tribute to our daughter, who is missed every moment of every day in this salty sea of life.

We were hoping the passage of time would make writing this easier —it hasn’t. The pain and sadness we feel has not changed. But another thing that hasn’t changed is the memory of your radiant smile. The memory of your smile continues to make us smile. Yours was a genuine smile from the heart. We also often think of how helpful you were to us, no matter the task at hand;. as well as how eager you were to learn something new. Your family and everyone who knew you will always miss you, but we are grateful we had the privilege to know you. With love, Steve and Sherry

I always look back on my summer spent at the Cremona field site with the biggest smile. It was there that I met the Roosenburg family, each member filled with love and wonder for the natural world. I was so impressed by them all, and Selinde as the youngest at 5 years old was no exception. One of my favorite memories is picking cherry tomatoes with Selinde fresh from the garden, something I had never done before. I think she must have thought it funny that I asked her how to do it right, but she loved showing me which ones were best and we giggled together as we popped them in our mouths. I knew it then as I know it now that she was special beyond measure. My deepest sympathies to the entire Roosenburg family.

I met Selinde when she was a year old. She and Dirk were playing on the kitchen floor at the Cremona Farm field site in Maryland. Their floppy blonde hair was so similar that I had trouble telling them apart at first. Over the next few summers, they brought so much joy to everyone on the farm, not only because they were remarkably bright, happy and adorable, but because they engaged so sincerely with us. Early one field season, Selinde and Kate were over on the brick walkway that led from the house to the shed. As I came up the hill from the boat dock, Selinde gave me a shy but super exuberant smile to which Kate responded, “she likes you!” Although it was a silly moment, it stuck with me as an insight into the amazing life she would live, one rich with experiences and meaningful personal connections. I saw Selinde again a few years ago and, as countless others have described, could instantly see how good-natured and authentic she had remained. To her family and friends, I am so very sorry for this unfathomable loss. Selinde made the world better and will live forever in the hearts and minds of so many.

I attended WIWF Bootcamp with Lindy this fall. I gave her a ride from Boise to Vale and was glad to be the first person to meet her. She kept laughing as we passed all the wild onions on the side of the road and just had to have me pull over so she could pick one up and make sure she wasn’t crazy. She shared her hopes and dreams and I was excited for her path to come in Idaho. Her laugh was contagious and I hope her memory lives on forever. To her family—be immensely proud of the woman you raised. She was one of a kind and lived in love, laughter and light. I am so sorry for your loss.

Selinde was one of my first friends. I remember all the times when our parents would be at functions for the department, and she would always find something fun to do. She made those gatherings bearable; we were both children with insatiable curiosity. One day, Selinde showed me how to find salamanders under rocks. Needless to say, I was in awe of her salamander hunting talents. Another memory that stands out in my mind is riding a wagon down her driveway. It drew the attention of the adults, which I was keenly aware of, but she paid no mind. She taught me how to be carefree yet conscientious. Selinde will forever remind me of the joys of my childhood. We shared a love for wildlife and getting dirty. My path in life wouldn't be the same without her. Her devotion to this world and the people on it is truly inspiring. I can say with certainty that Selinde changed me for the better. Her soul lives on in my heart, my mind, every meandering creek, every salamander, and everything else that is beautiful in this world.

Willem, Kate and Dirk, my thoughts, prayers and love are flooding your way today and forever. When I think of Selinde, I think of joy and smiles. She had a special soul that radiated. I am so honored to have had a brief time to get to know her. I admired her tenacity in dealing with her accident in high school and am touched to read about her pathway since then. In her brief time with us, she seemed to learn to live her life to the fullest. I'm proud to know you, sweet Lindy.

I offer my prayers to Selinde’s family on such as shocking loss. Selinde was only a few years older than me and seemed like she had so much to offer the world. While I didn’t know her very well, I have several memories of her and she was always kind – I can’t think of a time when she wasn’t. I played in a youth orchestra with her at OU’s school of music. I had played the violin for a little bit, but Selinde knew how to fiddle! I remember seeing her play at a Halloween event at her house. I was so impressed with her when she played the violin col legno, with the wood of the bow – something that I had never seen before. I can also remember Selinde at the district science fair. She and her mom were talking to my family and asking if it was worth it for them to come to the awards ceremony at the end of the fair. I believe it was her first time at the fair and she seemed a little nervous and unsure of herself. Despite her uncertainty, you could tell that she was passionate and had worked hard on her project and of course, she went on to win awards at the ceremony. I always knew that one day she would have a large positive impact on the world but when I read all these tributes, I realized that she already did.

Lindy, thank you for making the summer of 2019 a great one for me. I had a great time getting to know you and going on a ton of adventures with you and Tevs. You were the most adventurous, funniest, and fun-loving person I have had the pleasure of being around during my wildlife escapades. You showed me a different take on life that I will carry with me forever and you introduced me to some great music as well. I have a ton of great memories (I think I got on your nerves a lot, too haha) of you that still make me laugh every single time, to this day. I'll always cherish the chances we had to roam Washington and I know with your kind soul you're in a better place adventuring places that we can't even fathom. I miss you and wish I had the chance to spend more time with you. -Mallard

Selinde and Amy (a friend of hers in her class) used to draw pictures together and then they would give me the pictures. They were rookies in marching band with me when I was field commander. This may have seemed like something small, but at the time I was struggling with PTSD, severe depression, and anxiety. Those pictures were sometimes the difference between whether I went to bed safe from myself or not. It meant the world to me and still does. She was a light during some of my darkest times despite being younger than me. I wish she had known the huge impact it had. This world lost a hero. It brings me so much sorrow and my heart goes out to her friends and family.

I knew Selinde as a spirited and inquisitive toddler, full of joy and energy. In reading through these tributes, I have learned that she grew up to be a strong, fun-loving, and inspirational friend to many, not surprising given Willem for a dad and Kate for a mom. My heart is with the family and others who were part of Lindy's time with us.

I was Selinde's School Counselor at Athens High School and always looked forward to our conversations together. I loved how driven and determined she was. She was also so sweet and kind with the most beautiful smile that could light up a room. I often think of her when the topic of state testing arises. A fond memory I have of her was her insurmountable determination to take the state tests/End of Course Exams after having a major injury/surgery to her leg. I know she had to have been so uncomfortable taking that test, but she pushed through and I was very inspired by this - even to this day.  She never seemed to let anything slow her down. Selinde is a student that crosses my mind often and I am terribly sorry for her loss.

Selinde, I graduated in ‘17 but, I remember your beautiful face so clearly all throughout high school. I have come to find that we had a lot in common such as being born in Lancaster, growing up in Amesville (that always comes with some stories) and even sharing a bus to football games (that comes with even more stories). I am saddened to hear the news of your passing. I am sorry that we never got a chance to speak because it seems like we would have had some great conversations and some good long laughs-maybe could have gone to the Fireman’s Festival together! From what I know and have read, you were a driven young woman with a wonderful personality. I wish I could have experienced your great energy and charm myself! I am praying for your family and friends during this time of grief and heartbreak - especially, for a young woman like yourself. You will be missed and remembered fiercely. Rest in Heaven, Selinde. Until we meet. <3

My heart breaks for the loss of Selinde. Not only bacause I can’t even image the pain of losing one’s beloved child, sister and friend, but because of the all the “what could have beens”. Lindy was one of the most exuberant people I knew, a kindred spirit of enthusiasm and so much more. To not watch her life unfold and enjoy her adventures is a loss indeed. Hugs to Kate, Wilhem and Dirk, I know Selinde’s smile will always bring a smile to my face and her enthusiasm will always remind me to enjoy the moment!

I never met this remarkable young woman. I saw her death mentioned on an Athens Facebook group, and followed the link which led me to these amazing stories and pictures. As a fellow AHS grad (1980) and Marching Green & Gold member, I want to offer condolences to her family and friends, grieving such a terrible loss.. And to say that I have rarely seen an example of a life well-lived. Selinde obviously made the most of every moment and lived her life on her own terms. May her memory be a blessing.

When I think back on the few times I spent with Selinde, my memory keeps returning to one - chubby bunny. A silly game that we all played one evening at your house. But it is not the game I like to remember, but the way Selinde laughed. Her smile and laughter was contagious, and it makes me smile just thinking about it now. My heart weighs heavy for you all, but I am so thankful for having the chance to know Selinda. In the words of Chilean writer Isabel Allende, "Death does not exist, people only die when they are forgotten; if you can remember me I will always be with you." I will never forget Selinda, her smile, her laughter. My love to you all.

I was deeply saddened to read about the death of Selinde in the Columbus Dispatch this morning. She was a student in my Chemistry 1210 class at The Ohio State University. Such a vibrant, curious, kind and hard working student. I have over 600 students each term - Selinde stood out. She attended each office hour at 8 am. Always prepared. Always full of questions. Few freshman students are that dedicated. A joy. I remember our conversations. She often spoke of her family. She was so full of life wanting to make a difference. I offer my deepest condolences to her family.

Selinde exuded a warmth and curiosity that was certainly unique to her. In that one year I spent with her in French class, she contributed not only interesting perspectives and asked profound questions, but she also found humor in the beauty of learning another language. She will be forever remembered as the essence of joy.

Beyond her sophomore year in French class, my admiration for Selinde grew when she would come to my Academic Coaching period to tutor a fellow student in math. Not only was she consistent in coming, kind in her demeanor, and patient with the process, but to watch her tutor was to see her as a guide of the curriculum. She is one of two students in my 17 year career who had this intuitive sense of how to help another without doing the work for them. Wise beyond her years, a sense of an old soul, on a daily basis, she would remind me the importance of patience not just in the classroom, but in life in general. Though her time on earth too brief, her impact will certainly endure.

Du courage to her entire family and all her close friends each day moving forward.

I only met Selinde virtually, as I worked with her as her Admissions Counselor at the University of Idaho. In the uninspiring virtual world of this past year, Selinde exuded the exact opposite - she was inspiring. Her enthusiasm for going on to college, let alone one as far away as Idaho, was encouraging to me. I was the one supposed to be encouraging her but left every interaction more inspired about my own school, especially for her passion for chosen major of Fire Ecology and Management. She seemed the perfect student- smart, excited, determined, fun, and passionate. That is also what makes this so painful, that lost opportunity for her and for what this world would gain from her. However, as her loss was shared here on this campus, the faculty and staff who worked with her or on her behalf, were impacted and moved by her. In that alone, she lives on in Idaho without even taking a class yet. We gain perspective, value, and love in her tragic loss and will better pay that forward in all our interactions. We are sorry for your loss and pray for your comfort, with the understanding that she now rests in ultimate peace.

Willem and Kate, I never met Selinde but I feel like I have come to know her a bit with the tributes from people who cared about her so deeply. She truly is a remarkable young woman and I hope that your pain can be a little more bearable knowing that you did an amazing job raising her. It is so obvious that your love and guidance led her to make a difference not only in the local community, but in a segment of society at large. Everyone who has ever had a child is grieving with you and grateful to you for sharing Selinde's stories.

I had the pleasure of having Selinde in class for both her junior and senior year. Above all else Selinde proved to me what a determined, hardworking young woman she was. My first favorite memory of Selinde is from her senior year in calculus. She made the comment one day in class that calculus had changed her life. I asked how and she said that the way in which she makes her capital S will be forever changed. You see, she use to make a cursive S but after integration that all changed. This made me smile because the same thing happened to me when I first took calculus.

My other favorite memory is when I wrote her letter of recommendation when she was applying for the Naval Academy. As a teacher you find out a lot you do not know about your students when you write a recommendation letter for them. As I was reading her background information she stated how she wanted to fly planes for the Navy and be a "badass". She went on and on about how badass it would be and that she really wanted to be a badass. Again I smiled. Selinde has a way of doing that to me. Before she graduated she gave me a picture to put on my bulletin board. Every time I walk by it and see her beautiful face smiling back at me, I always think the same thing. I wonder what badass adventures Selinde is on today?

My heart and thoughts go out to her family and the ones who love her most. Selinde will be forever missed....

From Jean Witkowski via email: I remember a sweet little girl, perhaps 3 years old at the time, who would come into the Biological Science office with her Daddy and the two of them would stop in my office to see me. What a pleasant way to break up my day. This little 3 year old was of course your beloved Selinde. She would curiously examine the items I had on my desk; the multi-colored glass paperweight or the wooden puzzle. Her little round face was full of light and her eyes were like saucers as she examined the items. But all too soon it was time to go and Daddy swooped her up in his strong arms and you could see the love in the eyes of both of them as they said their goodbyes to me and they went on about their way. What a beautiful child she was, her face full of light, curiosity, and love. When I moved from the Bio Sci office I seldom saw Willem but when I did I would ask about Dirk and Selinde and it was always with great pride that he would tell me of their activities. And although I never knew Selinde as she grew to become a young woman pursuing her dreams. I know her life was a life lost way too soon.

I met Selinde while volunteering for the Athens County Red Cross blood drives. She came in with her mother for her first donation experience, shy, and a little scared, but very earnest in her desire to donate. She was memorable.

I only knew Selinde indirectly through her father when I visited Maryland. I got to meet one of her rabbits. I enjoyed hearing about her love of raising rabbits and hope the family will have some joy remembering her 4-H adventures.

I did not know Lindy, but I do know that Kees loved her. I have been praying for Kees and Lindy's family for peace and comfort. When you loose someone you love, it leaves a hole in your heart. Please know you are not alone.

Selinde was a student in my Sophomore Pre-AP English class. She was hardworking, insightful, and forever curious about everything. She was never afraid to voice her opinion during class discussions, and did so in a way that made her classmates consider different perspectives. I knew then that Selinde was the rare student who not only enjoyed learning, but also applied that learning to her enjoyment of life. My sympathies and love go out to Selinde’s family and friends. May you forever feel her light around you.

Willem, Kate, Dirk, I am heartbroken for your family. I have already forgotten some of the things my kids did only a few years ago, so I will share these with you even if you may still remember them. When I came to your Maryland house, I remember Lindy made all of the group sit down and watch her put on plays all night. She must have been about 5, and she was such a delight. I babysat for you guys a few years later (I remember vividly one of the nights, it was the day Dirk got sent home from school for engineering something far beyond his years...). I walked into your home, with venison chili cooking (I couldn't believe you kids ate so many things mixed together!), music playing, and no TV in sight. I thought to myself, "this is how I want my home to be someday". It was so peaceful. Lindy made us play her own made-up games all night long. Though I have no idea what she was like as an older child, I can only assume her active imagination never stopped. May your family find peace in some of these wonderful memories, she was obviously very loved by many.

Selinde was in my junior English class in high school and left a charming and lasting impression. She always had a smile, something thoughtful to say, and always stayed after class a bit to share her thoughts on what we discussed as well her own interests and things she was curious about. Her beauty was evident inside and out. Our world has lost a beautiful soul. My deepest sympathies go out for all knew and love Selinde.

The world has lost a bright light. I was Selinde's French teacher for three years. She was so joyful and curious. She was unapologetically Selinde, and this made everyone around her more willing to be a truer version of themselves. Her laughter, creativity, and authenticity were infectious. My heavy heart goes out to the many who will miss her.

I taught Selinde at West Elementary. She was a creative thinker and a friend to all.  I’ll never forget that for her birthday treat, she requested deviled eggs instead of tired, old cupcakes. I think of her every time I have a deviled egg and always will. I think that’s what made her so special, she was true to herself.  Prayers and hugs for her family and friends, what an immense loss.

We are neighbors and have had the privilege of knowing Selinde a long time. We loved our opportunities to watch her grow up, playing with our giant St Bernard puppy, caring for our small flock of chickens, delighting us at the door on Halloween trick or treating with her brother (forever our only trick or treaters), delivering the BEST ginger cookies for Christmas she’d made herself. Always with a happy playful, curious spirit, she inspired us to look on life as an adventure to be explored. She will always live in our hearts, and we are so grateful for the times we did get to spend with her. She was loved then and she is loved now. She was a sweet angel in life and certainly will be forever.

I met Selinde in the Fall of 2020. She applied for the Women in Wildfire Boot Camp with the Bureau of Land Management in Vale, OR and was accepted. She so badly wanted to work in a job that could help the environment and the communities that live with fire. I remember her being inquisitive, curious, soft spoken, and willing to do everything it took to do the job. She thought everything was so cool. I was so happy to learn that she found a job doing what she wanted. I am devastated to learn that she is no longer with us. In remembrance the Cadre from the boot camp have purchased a Brick to be placed at the Firefighter Memorial at the National Interagency Fire Center located in Boise, ID to commemorate Lindy. The Brick will have her name, life dates, and her graduate date from the camp. When it's placed I will be sure to share a photo of it. She will be forever commemorated with other firefighters. With love to her family.

Selinde was the perfect model of how to live a life to its fullest.

I think often of the highlights of “senior follies” at the Athens High School in the spring of 2018. One of my fondest memories of Selinde (and the follies) was watching her play the trumpet. Like with everything that Selinde did, she performed with poise and intensity. Her spirit was on “full” that evening, like I suspect was the case for most of her waking hours.

Obituary – Selinde Downey Roosenburg

10 April 2000 - 23 March 2021

Selinde Downey Roosenburg, age 20, passed away as a result of injuries sustained as a passenger in a UTV rollover. She was working on a prescribed fire at the Richland Furnace State Forest. We may be comforted to know that she died doing what she loved; and that she surely wore a beaming, tired smile in the moments before the accident. Her last gift to this world was to give life through the donation of her organs. Our sparkling, vibrant daughter, sister, cousin and partner would have wanted this tragedy to bring life and joy to others.

Lindy was born in Lancaster, Ohio on 10 April 2000, but grew up a barefoot explorer in the woods outside Amesville. From birth, she was a spirited child who confronted the world on her own terms. She attended West Elementary, Athens Middle School, and Athens High School and was a member of the Athens Marching Green and Gold and the Athens Swim Team.

Selinde settled on Forestry after two years at Ohio State University , but when learning changed she decided to experience life rather than merely imagining it from the classroom. In the fall Selinde attended an All-Women Wildlands Firefighting Course in Washington State. Working at Zaleski State Forest reinforced her decision to become a Wildlands Fire Fighter and Forester. She had been accepted into the best Fire Science program in the country, with a generous scholarship, to finish her training at University of Idaho. Lindy was looking forward to learning all she could about fire and bringing her knowledge back to the woods of SE Ohio.

Lindy was beautiful without knowing it, strong-willed yet vulnerable, bursting with energy and enthusiasm, but also quiet and introspective. She was a fiercely loyal and loving young woman, with a humor so quick and dry that the unsuspecting only caught the pun or barb if they saw the twinkle in her eye. She lived her life with an inspiring liberation, like wearing white shrimper boots on OSU campus in defiance of the standard attire. She rejected pretension and would not tolerate drama. For her, the days were for experiencing life to the fullest, making other people laugh, and becoming a hero to her community.

Lindy loved animals of all shapes and sizes, filling our lives with rabbits, ducks, dead bluebirds and wiggling snakes, while spoiling the family dogs at every opportunity. She played guitar, fiddle, and trumpet; but mostly she sang, announcing her presence before she arrived and gracing quiet moments with her joyful voice.

Selinde is survived by her parents Willem Roosenburg and Kate Kelley, brother Dirk Roosenburg, grandmother Carol Kelley (Bryn Mawr PA), aunts (Alex Woodard, London England; Eleanne Roosenburg, Acton MA), uncles (Brendan Kelley, Seattle WA; Ian Kelley, San Diego, CA), cousins (Esme and Phoebe Wessel, Asheville NC; Jordan Kelley, Ocean City NJ), her partner Kees Van Dijk (Lancaster OH), and many, many dear friends.

Memorial Day 2022

May 31, 2022
Today I was moved by words at a Memorial Day event. Local dignitaries told stories of military deaths and the importance of those stories, not just to the family, but also to the community of each fallen soldier. The stories can instill pride in the communities and inspire others to put their lives on the line. I heard that few Americans have served in the military, so not everyone can remember someone who chose to serve their community and country, knowing that they might risk their lives in that service. Finally, one veteran declared that the death of a soldier without remembrance of when and why they served, makes their sacrifice meaningless. I think I am now ready to tell Selinde’s stories, so that her death is not in vain.

Some people seek a career for fame, others for fortune, and some, like Selinde, to serve. In Lindy’s junior year she started the long and complicated process of applying to the Naval Academy. While she ultimately didn't get accepted, Selinde was nominated by Representative Stivers, invited to visit, and interviewed for the elite program. When her application was declined, Selinde wandered a while at OSU, seeking another way in which to serve. Several factors lead Lindy to Wildland Firefighting: her love of forests, her passion for all things fire- from candles to bonfires, and ultimately the huge, destructive wildfires out West and in Australia. In the fall of 2020 Lindy identified and applied for an all-women's firefighting boot camp. The program paid her to attend and learn basic skills. She was happy that she could use her new skills in Ohio on prescribed burns, which improve oak woodlands and thereby increase biodiversity. Feeling confident in her calling, Lindy applied to transfer to the University of Idaho Fire Science program.  Selinde had found her path: to serve the forest community she cherished by protecting and improving them through fire.

Lindy was not a member of the military, but she had chosen a life of service. She was not fighting people, but aspired to fight destructive fires. She was not protecting our freedom, as many Memorial Day speakers mentioned, but she planned to protect and defend not just the forests in which she grew up but also those elsewhere. She was driven by the climate crisis to act, not to sit in despair, but to dedicate her life to the vast forests that give us the oxygen we breathe and absorb the carbon dioxide we pollute. Selinde was bold, brave and determined throughout her life. She was willing to put her life on the line to have an impact on the earth’s climate, protecting the people and places she loved. May we all be so inspired.

So full of life wanting to make a difference

May 28, 2022
from Rosemary Bartoszek-Loza
I was deeply saddened to read about the death of Selinde in the Columbus Dispatch this morning. She was a student in my Chemistry 1210 class at The Ohio State University. Such a vibrant, curious, kind and hard working student. I have over 600 students each term - Selinde stood out. She attended each office hour at 8 am. Always prepared. Always full of questions. Few freshman students are that dedicated. A joy. I remember our conversations. She often spoke of her family. She was so full of life wanting to make a difference. I offer my deepest condolences to her family.

Selinde was one of the first friends I ever had. I will always remember her as someone who inspired adventure and passion about the world around us.

Lindy always was her own person. I remember her fiery uniqueness throughout elementary and middle school. Her overalls, the trapeze in her room, her laugh, her humor. For one of her birthdays, we made sushi. I remember noticing and laughing with her about the genius of the "ribbon drawer" in her kitchen. Today, I have my own ribbon drawer and always think of her when I open it. For one Christmas, she gave me an ornament made out of one of these ribbons tied around a shell with a glitter-glued letter 'S' that my family hangs on our tree every year.

When we were in third grade, Lindy started a club around the World Wildlife Fund for Endangered Species. I remember going to the bank for the first time with Kate and a few of our friends to start a bank account for the club. The bank showed us a vault where money is kept, and I recall feeling this immense sense of responsibility and ability to make an impact on the world, all sparked by Selinde's passion at such a young age.

When I moved across the country for 5th grade, Selinde was one of my friends who made me feel less alone. She sent me countless letters I still have, in envelopes handmade out of pages from National Geographic magazines, or cartoons from the newspaper. In one letter, she described showing her rabbit, Mimi, at the fair and winning Champion in several categories (it was her "first year showing rabbits and [she] was very proud"). She circled some of the words of the letter and marked dots above the words so that I could solve it as a code. In a letter sent in middle school, she sent an origami panda she had made.

I'll never forget her love of Totoro, the beloved Studio Ghibli character. She had Totoro images and things around her room and showed us Ghibli movies when I visited her house. When I moved into my dorm my freshman year of college, I was so excited to tell her I got a Totoro poster to hang up in my room. She made me love and appreciate so many beautiful things I would never have heard about without her.

In college, I was lucky enough to get to see her again after 4 years apart. That year, we lived in dorms near each other and met up for a surreal night of adventure. I remember running towards each other, finally reuniting after so long. We walked down High street, stopping at a little pizza place and catching up about all that was going on in our lives. I remember listening, wide-eyed, as she told me about her experiences double (or triple?) riding on the electric Lime scooters around campus. She showed me her room and her college Totoro things. We visited a music store and a massive thrift shop, and I remember feeling like a young child again, like nothing had changed and I was with my friend again after so long.

I am so blessed to have been able to be your friend and see your light and passion up close, Lindy. Miss and love you so much.
