In Fond Memory of Mrs Lisa Tam

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening.

My name is Connie Lai, I am here representing Houston Hong Kong Association to bid farewell to our beloved sister and friend, Lisa, and to extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Lauris Tam and family for their loss.

We are gathered here today to honor, respect and remember a good person who has given so much of herself to her family, to her profession, and to our community.

There are many things for which Lisa will be remembered. To all of us who have known Lisa, she was always happy and cheerful, as if nothing was worth of her worries. So let’s take a moment to shift our grief to the many funny, joking, laughing and happy times that we had shared with her.

Along with her husband Lauris, Lisa has been working and contributing tremendously towards the continued success of our Association since its founding in the 80’s. She has been our President and Chairperson for many terms. Most importantly, regardless of her title or position, she was always the one stepping up to lead and organize events and activities for our members, celebrating our cultural festivals as well as travelling with us far and near. Her passion and energy in supporting the wellness of not just our association, but other community organizations and events, is commendable.

The most remarkable events that all of us will remember her were the annual Spring Galas that HK Association hosted every year non-stopped for over 20 years in a roll, until the pandemic last year of course. Every year Lisa had worked tirelessly taking care of every details to make the event possible, hosting over several hundreds of guests including government officials and community leaders. Besides the hard work behind the scene, she and Lauris were the highlights of our performances on stage, dressed up in glamorous gowns and costumes, singing and dancing, and brought us the funniest skids.  I am sure we will all remember those joyful times she had shared with us.

Lisa, you have left behind a legacy of achievements to inspire us. You can never be replaced, but will always be remembered.

May your soul Rest in Peace. Amen.

Auntie Lisa, my best memory of you is that you were always smiling, always nice to everyone regardless of the circumstances; that’s not easy to do but you did it so beautifully and naturally. I truly admire you for that. You were not only living a colorful life but you brought your colorful life into our lives by simply being my mom’s friend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do to us and to many others. We pray God to bless you for your eternal life, and give you and your family peace during this difficult time. I will miss your beautiful smiles and your contiguous personalities that make people around you happy and full of joy ❤️.

Lisa, I will miss your lovely smile and friendship. I knew you volunteered in many organizations:including AAREA. One day I was going on a trip and surprisingly I saw your smiling face at the airport without travelling bags. Then I found out that you had volunteered at Bush international Airport for over 10 years, answering questions, helping travelers to catch their flights. Houston was so lucky to have a such lovely lady at the International airport to welcome the travelers to Houston. You will be deeply missed. May you rest in peace. Jan K

Thank you for letting us know. I wish things were different. Your mother is so brave, so kind, and so generous. She has always cared for all of us. Albert remembers that Aunt Lisa always made sure he had enough to eat, from the time he came to Houston as a little kid. Loretta remembers Aunt Lisa giving all the treats to Alex when he was small. We all remember the delicious meals and family get-togethers, in the homes and in the restaurants.

Please stay strong during this difficult time.

Love,

It’s been several years since we saw each other. In the past, when you were heading the Hong Kong Association, in passing, I would hear about you and Lisa. I sort of loss touch with some of the HK friends as our interest drift away in a different direction.

I just heard from Lytton Lai’s message about Lisa’s current condition at home. I still remember when you two met and got married. Lisa is a very kind person always carry a nice smile. Please send my best regards to her. You have raised great children, Lyndon, Lawrence and Liana. Happy to hear that they are close by your side. We will keep Lisa and family in our prayers!

I only learned about auntie Lisa’s health condition recently. I remember seeing both of you last January at the airport without planning. It was such a great moment to see old friends that God connected us.

Auntie Lisa was the first person to help our family when we first immigrated from Hong Kong and we didn’t even speak English. She was very special to our family. Then we reconnected again in Las Vegas even we didn’t keep in touch for awhile. She will always be in my heart and prayers. And I will always remember her bright smile and joy that she brought to everyone in her life. God bless you and your family with lots of love and support during this difficult time. Please reach out if you need anything. Thanks for everything and having such a wonderful person with beautiful soul in our lives. God will protect and love her forever.

Love ❤️

Lisa,

! Lisa
Lisa,
我們永遠懷念你!安息主懷吧!

Dear Lisa,

I have known you for twenty years. We worked together as partner in the Real Estate Association for Asian American for all these years and we had a good picture that we just got the “ long term service award” in the past gala together.

When I met you, I had not became a catholic yet.
So I didn’t know much about what you did for the Lord and for the church; also because you are not the kind of Christian who only says "Lord! Lord!" (Mathew 7:21) but always use actions to let others feel your care and kindness. Your smile is the "trade mark" that each of our us remember you. The special thing I admire you most is that even you got really upset by "someone" but you could turn around and ask "someone" if he/she wanted coffee and made sure they got food to eat.  You are the person never holds grudges, and is generous in heart. Seeing that by your side, I am full of admiration and praise for you in my heart. That’s the person our Lord teach us to be.  When I miss you these few nights, it suddenly became clear that you are not just being a model of a true Christian, so like Christ—our teacher. Lisa, you did it. As long as it is about charity or helping others, no matter which communities or organizations you will spare no effort to lend a helping hand.
Later, I myself joined the big family of Ascension Catholic Church

I also know that you have supported the church for so many years, from the very beginning to establish the church. You helped to do reading and EMHC for Eucharist during Sunday Mass. You are the veteran of Ascension Chinese Mission and have been silently giving and working for the Church of God. Even during the time you aware of your illness, you are still full of enthusiasm for life, and it has not been changed by the illness; you entrust everything in the hands of the Lord to let you through every day all full of warmth and freshness, and you never using physical illness as an excuse. Like helping your children with grandchildren, volunteering for the community, not afraid to travel long distances to the airport to volunteer to help Chinese people who do not speak English, and so on. All of this is worth learning and admiring you.  You can say: St. Paul to Timothy 4:7 [I have reached the end of this race, I have finished this good battle]. What is waiting for you is the Lord’s award, because you have a good report to submit to God!

Lisa, we will always miss you! Rest in peace!

Mom was a special. She worked extremely hard for us kids growing up yet she was always there to make us dinner and take care of us.

She loved traveling, hanging with friends, playing mahjong, cooking, watching football, going to the movie theater, raising animals (cat, dog, birds...)...

I remember when Lyndon and I were in elementary school, during Halloween we didn't get the fancy costumes but instead mom handmade 2 custom ninja outfits (one totally in black and one in white). I loved it.

She was always looking to help others even when she was sick. She literally drove to an hr to volunteer only to have her car break down on the Houston freeway.

Lisa, my sister-in-law, has always been a loving care wife, mother and grandmother to all her family members. My wife, Alice and I sure miss Lisa very much since we have known her for over 50 years in Houston. Lisa and my brother Lauris have raised a great, wonderful family; Lyndon, Lawrence, Liana and the 7 grandchildren, all in Houston, Austin Texas.
Lisa is a legend of her own in everyway in Houston. She launched successfully the Chinese fast food to-go Egg Roll Queen in Southwest Houston for several years, a vision and creativity that many Chinese chefs follow afterwards to prepare the fast and economically Chinese fast food.
Also Lisa volunteered her time and efforts to help out to prepare the "free" vegetarian Chinese food in Houston recently. The vegetarian food is good for the human health and the environment as well. A good idea and concept that many of us endorse and promote.
There are many other contributions from Lisa to the Houston community. I like to mention that Lisa's volunteer work for the City of Houston working as a representative helping the incoming visitors to Houston at the Houston Intercontinental Airport is another fine example of her.

With our heartfelt appreciation and love to you, Lisa

We are deeply saddened with Lisa's passing at such a relatively young age. Our hearts and prayers are with Lauris, Lyndon, Lawrence, Liana, and the rest of the Tam family. Lisa was a generous, loving and caring person. Every time she was back from a long trip, it would not be a surprise for her friends to receive a gift from her. She did not hesitate to help people in needs. She volunteered her time and made countless donations. It had always been a consensus that Lisa was the "Rock" of Hong Kong Association of Houston. Without her compassion, determination, and perseverance, it's hard to image that Hong Kong Association of Houston would become and remain a force within the Houston Chinese Community. Rest in peace Lisa. We will miss your companionship, your kindness, your laughs and everything you had done for us. Hope you will re-unite with Jennifer and other old friends in heaven.

Lisa was a lady in every sense of the word. She was always smiling, kind, graceful and beautifully dressed. I looked forward to seeing her at every AAREA gala and luncheon I attended. She was always willing to help and one time, on a moment's notice, showed up at a Keep Houston Beautiful event to translate for me with some neighbors  in southwest Houston. She then jumped into her car to attend a wedding! She enjoyed life to the fullest and I will miss her kind spirit. My prayers for you, Lauris, and your beautiful family.

One thing I have learned about my mother was that she cared for so many people like they were her children. She always loved to bring food or treats especially for the kids. Food was definitely an important part of my Mom’s life. Whether it was with the restaurants she started, enjoying the strangest delicacies in foreign street markets, or cooking for our family at home.
She also really loved being around friends. My dad used to tell us how quiet Mom used to be when he first met her or even to the point of being shy.  I believe people instantly recognized how kind she was and quickly became her friend.  She made many, many friends and she loved traveling, throwing galas/parties, or getting in an all-nighter with several rounds of Mahjong. I recall so many nights growing up as my bedroom that I shared with my brother at the time waas across the atrium from the kitchen.  So I could see and hear my mom play mahjong until I fell asleep. We were all very happy to hear that this year, my mom finally won 1st place in a Mahjong tournament that she helped host for over 35 years.
The last thing I want to share about my mother is her faith. I believe she has never missed a Xmas Eve Mass. I think the most difficult one to find was in Jamaica. As I think back on that trip, my mom’s most important item on the itinerary was going to a midnight mass and since there was none at the resort we were at, she went to a local church.
So Food, Friends and Faith are just a few of the things I will remember.  I love my mom and I will miss her.
