Her Life

The Final Years

April 23, 2012
Lois struggled with many illnesses throughout her life.  In her final few years, her heart grew strong, but her body and mind grew weak.

Her illness spiked in the spring of 2011, and Lois left this world at 1:30 am on Easter morning.

Her son Matthew will miss her and remember her forever.  We will remember the bright and happy years Lois had on this Earth, and we will pray for her spirit to embrace the peace of the next world.

We honor the dead by learning from their lives.  We honor the dead by living, and in this case, living with joy in our hearts.  Life is a gift, every minute is a gift.  In Lois Potter Huffman's honor, we will strive to be happy.

Life In Colorado

April 23, 2012
Lois and her family relocated from Kansas to Colorado Springs in 1979, heading west for her husband's career as a medical doctor.  The diverse family moved into a huge old hotel-turned-house at the foot of the Rockies near the entrance to Cheyenne canyon.

Lois enjoyed the many benefits and joys of living in Colorado.  She quickly became a skier and lover of winter sports.  Lois became an active memeber of Colorado figure skating, and worked with the Broadmoor Skating Club.  She supported young skaters, including son, as they trained for national competitions.

Lois also continue to love the arts, music and drama.  She volunteered for the Fine Arts Center, Parade of Homes, and Musical Theater of the Rockies at the Pikes Peak Center.  She performed and contributed to many cultural events in Colorado Springs, a city she loved deeply.

College, and a New Family Begins

April 23, 2012
Lois attended KU and studied children's verbal development.  She recieved an advanced degree and earned a PhD in speech pathology.

While at KU, Lois also met her future husband. They fell in love, he typed her dissertation, she helped him study for med school, they water-skied in the Ozarks, got engaged, and were soon married.

The couple struggled to have kids at first, but Matthew arrived in 1970.

Early Years

April 23, 2012

Lois was born in California on October 19, 1941 to Don and Olive Potter, a time when the United States was on the brink of war.  Her father's work moved the family out of California, "Head East, Young Man!" and into Kansas.

Lois then grew up near the farmland of central Kansas.  She had two siblings, Fred and Linda. Lois attended local public schools and was a popular kid. She even took home a beauty pageant award one spring day.

Early on, Lois developed a love of the arts, a love that would stay with her. She played violin and piano and remained involved with theater throughout her life.
