Grandma's Kitchen Table

October 4, 2010

You never left her table hungry.  This one looks to be set for a birthday.

Wayside Women's Club

October 4, 2010

That's grandma (third from right on the front row).  I used to know most all the names but now you'll have to figure it out for yourself.  My mother (Dot) is first on the right of the back row.  Phillis Washington is directly behind the woman to grandma's right and her mother (sorry I cant remember her name) is just over Phillis' left shoulder.  Most of these were members of Wayside Baptist Church (and ALL of them were wonderful cooks...oh my word...dinner on the grounds was an occasion that was NOT to be missed.)

Birthday Party

October 4, 2010

One of Gordon's birthdays and grandma had fixed a wonderful lunch.  Heck just one of her "cat-head" biscuits would fill you up but I see what looks like corn and mashed potatoes and either pear halves or deviled eggs.  'bet there was some fried chicken closer to the camera and of course her kitchen was never without sweet ice tea. -- funny she never had diabetes.

Actually, this may have been taken in Howell's house.. whatever.

She always had teacakes when we would visit when I was 5 to 18.

Suntan and big hearted smile

October 4, 2010

Another pic from before I was born.  That's Howell, my uncle in the foreground.  His dad, Gordon had some training as a photographer and Howell has found a whole box of glass plate negatives that his dad had taken over the years.

This picture must have been taken close to the end of summer when Grandma spent so much time in her garden.  She sure has a nice suntan.

Fresh Peas From The Garden

October 4, 2010

This picture was taken way before my memory but the garden looked just the same when I knew it.  Grandma spent a large part of her life on that little plot of ground and she fed her family well from what she raised.  In the fall she would have Gordon and Howell make a potato hill behind where she is standing and more toward the little shed in the picture.  I had the privilege of gathering several potatoes for a family meal from that hill.

I have never tasted peas as sweet and flavorful as the ones from that garden.  Have you ever had lettuce with bacon grease poured lightly over it?  mmm...good. Yeah I know, cholesterol. but they never worried about it and I think worry kills more people than cholesterol.  When the garden needed plowing, Gordon or Howell would do that but the hoeing was just as hard and grandma knew how to chop the weeds and hill up the crops that needed hillin'up.
