Loren's love of music

October 13, 2012

Dear family and friends of Loren,
As I had mentioned in my note on Feb. 5, Loren loved music, and he was my violin student!  These pictures are of my students' Christmas recital on December 11, 2000, and he is here with the beginning adult ensemble, playing an arrangement of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" by Strauss.  It was quite an accomplishment for all of them, and you can see how happy he is in the pictures.  Truly, he was an inspiration to all the younger students.   --Respectfully, Cleo Aufderhaar

Condolences from Mr. Dieter Schmidt, Bosch Germany

August 5, 2012

Febuary 1, 2012

Today I spoke with Mr. Dieter Schmidt who is "Kommandant" of the Fire Department in Bosch , Germany.  Bosch uses the
fitness program which your Dad developed.

Mr. Schmidt will be writing something,  but he wanted me to convey his heart felt condolences to the family as well.  He spoke very fondly and with great admiratioin and respect for your Dad.  He also described your Dad as having and exceptional knowledge and interest in European culture and history.

He was impressed by your his conviction as a Lutheran and as a result he took your Dad to Eisenach, Germany where together they followed Martin Luther's footprints.

He also immensely enjoyed the time in the car with your Dad and  with you, Bruce. I believe it was shortly before the one of the last elections.  He absolutely loved you taking a more liberal stance on the election in contrast to your Dad's slightly more conservative position.  :-)

Love to you all,

Tom

Condolences from Dr. Karl Kirsch, Berlin Germany

February 1, 2012

Today I spoke personally with Dr. Karl Kirsch in Berlin and he asked that I relay heart feltcondolences to the whole family and especially to your Mom and to  Bruce.   He said that Bruce isalways welcome at his home and he hopes that if Bruce  makes it back to Europe that he will contact him.

Dr. Kirsch got to know your Dad in 1971.  He described your Dad as a very good friend and saidthat every time he was with your Dad he considered the time together a very big "Gewinn", a German word which is hard to translate but ithas to do with the feeling of having won a prize.

Special greetings to Bruce from his son Rudiger as well.

Love to you all,

Tom

                       HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Dr. Myhre,

We miss you at Nike.  I wanted to thank you for the research that has helped us so much.  Also, thank you for the friendship and support over the last few years.

I still remember when you cam to Westview to see my Olympic slide show.  That meant a lot to me.

I will continue to give Brad & Michelle a hard time about taking my blood in less than 6 tries.   :)   I stay consistent with testing to help out with the data.  You are in my thoughts.

Thanks,

Amy Begley

Condolences from Randy Wilber

August 5, 2012

I recently returned from a work assignment in London in preparation for the Olympic Games to be informed by a friend at NIKE of the passing of your father. Please accept my most sincere condolences. I first met your father through a professional collaboration and was immediately impressed by his expertise and practicality as an exercise physiologist. From there, I grew to enjoy his understated but effective manner in dealing with people, especially athletes and coaches. In addition to a professional colleague, I would also consider him as a friend. He had so many wonderful qualities that I admired, a true "gentleman and scholar." He leaves behind an impressive professional and personal legacy, and his impact on USA Track & Field was profound. Again, please accept my condolences. Please know that you and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.

May the peace of the Lord be always with you.

Sincerely,
Randy Wilber

We were high school classmates.

We had an "initiation" when we were freshmen and had to do silly things.  I remember Loren having to blow as big a bubble as he could.

Alphabetically, he sat it front of me in some classes. I wish I'd found his address last Christmas - I wanted to send a card.  This was a beautiful service, another lovely memory.  God be with you!

I have known Bubs forever.

Bubs was brilliant in every phase he entered--But he could never master KripKaka!!

March 3, 2012

While we were living in Switzerland, "Bubs" as we all knew him, surprised us on a number of occasions with an unexpected visit.  On one occasion we received a call from the "Rossli," a local restaurant.  One of our children, all of whom were quite young at the time, had answered the phone and relayed that "someone from the family was at the Rossli (restaurant)."  I thought perhaps it was a wrong number, but since the restaurant was just down the street, we went to investigate - and there was Uncle Bubs!  He always brought with him thoughtful gifts for the children, but most of all he brought interest in their lives, energy to play with them, and lots of warmth and laughter.  Bubs lived large, and his commitment to family was clear.  He will be missed.

I am thinking of all of you gathered today to celebrate Loren's life and indomitable spirit. My prayers are with you as you remember, grieve, and slowly - in the certitude the Love is greater than death - begin to heal.

Elizabethan Serenade

February 5, 2012
11 Elizabethan Serenade

Loren was my friend, and also my violin student! (His son, Bruce, was my student in 1979.) He enjoyed that so much, and at each lesson, we had many good chats about music and traveling to Germany.  He introduced me to a song called, "Elizabethan Serenade,"  back in 1993, when my string quartet played that for his daughter Melanie's wedding.  A few years later, he wanted to study the violin, and on one of my student's Christmas recitals in the year of 2000, he played in my beginning adult ensemble, which performed "The Blue Danube." That was a big sense of accomplishment for all of them, on such a difficult instrument! The "Elizabethan Serenade" became one of my most favorite pieces to perform and in 2002, I recorded this with my good friend and excellent accordionist, Robert Atwood on his CD called "This Old Accordion," which I gave a copy to Loren.  He loved this kind of music and also classical, as he would let me know about the concerts he would attend in Portland.  On the subject of Germany, he was instrumental in encouraging me to take my father to Germany.  He told me how to go about doing this, and I then made sure that this happened.  Of all the gifts I gave my father, this is the one he treasured the most, and I have Loren to thank for this.  I will truly miss this sweet and gentle man, and my sincerest condolences to his wonderful family.   I hope I attached the song, "Elizabethan Serenade" correctly to this memorial so you can hear it.
Sincerely, Cleo
