Born the oldest of 2 children to Mary Crandall and Darius Lingener, Sr. Loretta was born and raised in Petersburg, NY. She lived in a converted horse barn. There was no running water or electricity. Her parents were simple people who, though they were dirt poor, took in friends and family.
