My Friend Louis Hungate

February 5, 2016

When I was a student at Texs Tech, I studied sometimes with the most colorful student in the ME department; Louis Hungate.  He was brilliant but he was a radical.  Ask anybody to name one member of the class of 59 and the answer you will get is “Hungate.” Louis did not have many social friends because he used the foulest language you can imagine all the time.  Phyllis made him behave when he was at our house.

We ran around with some hot-rodders like Dave Meers and Herman Garrett.  Louis got  a new Plymouth Fury his senior year.  Meers challenged him to a drag race and I rode with Louis out to the ¼ mile strip at Teenage Park.  The asphalt was wet and Meer’s Del Ray Chevy broke traction and Louis won the race.  He never gave Dave a rematch.

When I needed to go to see Daddy, who was near the end of his life, Louis came over to the house and offered to give me some money to make the trip.  I did not take it, but the offer was appreciated.  Louis asked me to be a pall bearer at his father’s funeral, and I also tried to help when his mother and then his wife died 35 years later.
