Lt. Dale H. “Smiley” Gilmore, 59 of LaGrange, formerly of West Point died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Hospice LaGrange.

Lt. Gilmore was born on Wednesday, June 27, 1951, in West Point, Georgia the son of the late Christian Gunn and Herren James Gilmore. He graduated from Lanett High School and had an associate degree in criminal justice. Lt. Gilmore served the as a police officer with the city of West Point leaving due to ill health after 19 years and 10 months of service. He had worked for the city utility department before becoming a police officer. Lt. Gilmore served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Peace Officers Annuity and Benefit Fund and an avid Alabama and Atlanta Braves fan.

Survivors include his wife Jenny Gilmore of LaGrange; one daughter, Sunnie Mallory of Statham, Georgia.

Funeral services for Lt. Dale H. “Smiley” Gilmore will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 2:00 PM EDT from the graveside in Marseilles Cemetery. Reverend Mark McGee and Reverend Theodore R. Book, SLL will officiate. The family will greet friends Monday evening from 6:00 PM EDT until 8:00 PM EDT at McCarthy Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice, 6 Medical Park North, Valley, Alabama, 36854 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Drive, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105.
