The last words I said to grandpa in 2015 was thanking him for teaching us all the value of faith, family and generosity. I want to thank grandma for teaching us the same. Grandma made all of our cherished, childhood memories on Valley Road possible...from the amazing holiday meals, to presents under the tree, to pool time and sodas on the deck. I look back at those memories with so much gratitude now. Grandma and grandpa built a strong, devoted family that we've all been blessed with for our lifetimes. I am so thankful for the legacy grandma has left behind. I'll never forget her smile, her home, her cooking, and her style. It's sad to let her go, but I know she's in heaven with grandpa now. Now we can now communicate with her through prayer, too. Her soul lives on. Miss you and love you grandma!

This is such terribly news, but Lucy had a rich 95 years ! I got to know her and Bill through their great support of their kids athletic endeavors at NCHS. She was a sweet and gentle soul who will be missed by her friends, and my heartfelt condolences to her children and their families.  2-5-0

Sending my condolences and prayers to all of my McCabe cousins and their families. I have special memories of visiting “Aunt Lu and Uncle Bill” with my parents as well as joining several McCabe relatives at their festive summertime parties around July 4th during the 80’s and 90’s! I was thrilled to return to their home on Valley Road with my own family for the McCabe-Reinert-Schwartz 2008 Family Reunion too. Your mother always greeted me with her big smile, twinkling blue eyes, warm hospitality, and kindness. These memories of her will live on in my heart forever.

To all my dear McCabe cousins, I want you to know how special my memories have been of all the many times through the years we gather together, especially the ones hosted at your home in New Canaan. Uncle Bill would come up with all the grand plans and Aunt Lu would make it happen! She was the “can do” person behind his “I’ve got an idea!” My fondest personal memory will be my visit in the summer of 1992 with my four children in my early single parent days. The big surprise, a stretch limo pulled into the driveway to drive us to NYC for a day of adventure my kids will never forget...nor I! No one did life like Bill and Lu McCabe, and I was blessed to call them my Aunt and Uncle. Heaven just got a little more adventurous now that the pair are at it again!

It's been so long since I've seen Lucille and yet my heart is deeply sad at her passing. I remember her as an amazing, strong family anchor who I looked up to. Looking through the pictures she did not change a bit, her bright, warm, welcoming smile stayed with her through the years. What a gift to all!

Rest peacefully with Bill in the arms of God Lucille.

Today is a very sad day. Thinking of Grandma today and how blessed I was to have so many years of beautiful memories with her growing up. Grandma created such a wonderful home for her children and grandchildren... hosting us every single holiday at 853 in New Canaan! A few days ago on her 95th birthday (Jan 7th), a few of the family members were able to be on a Zoom call with her. Although she was in bed and not doing too well, she was wearing a fun birthday hat and seemed to be in good spirits! Now she will be reunited with Grandpa, and that is a comfort for me. Sending love to the family and praying for Grandma today.

Julie and I send our sympathies to Lu’s family. I always will have deep respect for Lu and Bill. She was a very attentive hostess, and really knew how to throw a gathering. The beautiful family that she has is testament to the amazing woman who she was.

Touring the Big Apple McCabe Style

January 27, 2021
During the summer of 1993, I decided to take a vacation up north from NC with my four kids, Joel, Jonathan,Sarah and Hannah. Uncle Bill and Aunt Lu were so kind to host us in New Canaan for a few days. On the morning of our planned day to tour NYC we were all filled with surprise and excitement when a big white stretch limo pulled into the driveway to take us to the city!
We had the time of our lives seeing all the highlights, the World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty being among them. I remember the kids fascination with everything, The limo driver actually drove us around and waited for us between stops. Wow, think about how generous that was for Uncle Bill and Aunt Lu to do this for us. I was in the early days of being a single parent with my kids and this was a gift that blessed me and the memory of that visit  I will treasure forever.

Lu's News Issue 1

Lu was an exceptional High School student (See yearbook picture below) .She preferred the Arts, Home Economics and the romance of the Harlequin Novels.

Shortly after World War II the country was in a phase of tremendous growth and prosperity. It was the launch of the Baby Boomer age, Many young people were on the move migrating to major cities. Also after a victorious American War, young men in uniform were a highly desirable commodity.

At St Francis Lu met Bill, the handsome Midshipman Bill McCabe. Lu met Bill at her church social and they soon fell deeply in love though they only knew each other for a short time. Bill received an appointment to the Naval Academy and soon moved to Annapolis, MD.

Showing tremendous bravery and courage, Lu McCabe left the safety of her friends and family in Milwaukee and followed her heart to Washington. There at Annapolis their romance blossomed over the period off our years. At the Academy Bill and Lu enjoyed trips into Washington, sailing on the Potomac river (picture left), and at the Academy Ring dance reserved for the midshipmen's “One and Only” “OAO”

Lu's News Issue 4

January 2, 2021
Lu’s grandchild, Katie McCabe relays a heartwarming story highlighting a visit during Lu’s golden days as a fun Grandmother:

“When Meg and I were eight years old we spent the night at Grandma’s house. The next day she had so many fun activities planned. First thing in the morning, grandma made us a delicious scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and poured us tall glasses of orange juice. Then, we made our way to a surprise destination... It was Stewart Leonard’s grocery store!I had never seen anything like it. The aisles were full of animatronic animals that sang songs and free samples of candy. There were conveyors of juice filling machines. Grandma and Grandpa were very kind and bought us whatever groceries we wanted. That means ice cream of course!

Next up for lunch- Wendy’s! This was my first time ever going to eat Wendy’s before. Much better than McDonald’s or Burger King!
We of course finished off lunch with Wendy’s infamous Frosty. Grandma and Grandpa planned the perfect afternoon.”
