Her Life

In Loving Memory of Lucille Roquemore

June 24, 2016

Lucille Roquemore (Shell) was born Oct 26, 1948 in Widener, Arkansas to Willie L. Shell and Iver Lee Shell (Williams). Her family moved to Bakersfield, California when she was just a newborn. She was raised and nurtured by her mother Iver Lee Smith and her step-father Bishop Curtis Clifford Smith. Lucille, lovingly called “Cecille” and “Cille” by her family and friends, accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour in her youth. She attended local schools in Bakersfield and then at an early teen age married Aldon Ray Newsome Sr. and moved to Oakland California. In Oakland she served her community as a nursing assistant at a local convalescent home. Lucille took solace in helping others, she made friends easily and enjoyed being surrounded by loved ones. In 1977, along with her two children, she returned to Bakersfield to be closer to her family and to pursue a nursing assistant career.  In Bakersfield she went on to work at Mercy Hospital, Rosewood Retirement Home, Kern Medical Center and Miss Freise’s Maternity Home. She was then remarried to Earl Gene Roquemore and to this relationship, two children. The highlight of her career was that of being a childcare provider and nanny, it was her great love and she leaves a lasting memory with all the children she has cared for.

Lucille’s hobbies included nurturing extended family, making new friends, watching children play, and cultivating plants to beautify her home. She also enjoyed cooking with her specialties being potato salad, pineapple cake and raisin pie.
