Her Life

Career

October 17, 2016

Professor Lynn Olzak’s research emphasized the neural mechanisms underlying spatial pattern perception. In addition to research, her teaching positions included a period at UCLA as an Adjunct Professor from 1992-1998 and as an Associate Professor at Miami University of Ohio from 1998 through 2015. Following her retirement from Miami, she and her husband moved to Lafayette, CA, where she was able to maintain her involvement in the field with an affiliation with the UC Berkeley School of Optometry.

She was a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and served as chair of the OSA Vision Technical Group from 1996-1998. ARVO, VSS, OSA, and EVCP conferences were the highlight of her professional life and led to friendships from around the globe with researchers in the visual sciences.

Family

October 17, 2016

Lynn and her husband, Erwin, had two daughters together. Kimberly Johnson was born in September 1987 and Michelle in June 1991. Erwin is essentially retired and moved with Lynn to Lafayette, California in 2015 after they lived in Blue Ash, Ohio for 17 years and Los Angeles for 23.

Kimberly graduated from Stanford University in 2009. She now works at Alt School, an educational technology startup in San Francisco.

Michelle graduated Boston University in 2013 and now works at Epic, a health IT company, as a Project Manager and Implementation Specialist.

We remember our wife/mother fondly and want to share a few of our favorite memories::

- Lynn's radiant smile that was evident the first time she met her future husband and throughout their years together.
- Lynn making homeade cake for every birthday they had.
- Lynn being the go to for advice and care when they were sick. Even for Michelle and Kimberly after college when calling mom simply meant they would be googling the symptoms and remedies together.
- Traveling around the world with the whole family, whether it be to Greece to see ancient history, China to attend concerts in which Kimberly participated or the Carribean to simply relax with a book on the beach.
