A tribute by Mr. R. K. Bhandari

July 3, 2010

Dr. Madhukar Mehta, an eminent nuclear physicist of the country passed away yesterday, June 28, 2010 in Ahmedabad.  Dr. Mehta was among the founding fathers of the tradition of experimental nuclear physics research in India.  He held several important positions in the Department of Atomic Energy and contributed immensely to the nuclear physics research and related activities.

Dr. Mehta had particular affinity to our Centre.  He academically associated himself right from the begining with the Variable Energy Cyclotron (VEC) Project.  He used to have periodic and intense discussions with the young team that was constructing VEC and developing the experimental facilities.  He made very important contributions to the planning and development of the research facilities for our cyclotron.
Dr. Mehta alongwith Dr. Divatia led the group of scientists who had formulated the initial proposal for setting up of the Superconducting Cyclotron at VECC.  He took continuous interest in the development and construction of this accelerator for several years.
In his death we have lost a great well wisher and an eminent nuclear physicist.  We all pray that his sole rest in peace.  Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
R.K. Bhandari, Director, VECC
