Her Life

Their Love Story - Meant to be

March 7, 2021

My aunt was a religious woman. She goes to church almost daily. Tita Noli and Uncle Jun met at the church of the Holy Innocents in Manhattan, NY.   It was truly meant to be. She was divorced and so was he. Uncle Jun said he saw her sitting in one of the pews praying and introduced himself. She looked very sad, he thought and asked for her number. It seemed like she needed a friend and he was there to offer his friendship. He finally had the courage to call her but she did not pick up. She still lived with her sister Estella at that time. I remember, Tita Estella asked if she new the man who called and asked for her but she denied it.

One day, her long time best friend, Tita Lourdes called and asked my aunt if she's open to meeting a new friend. She explained how the man she wanted him to meet was very kind and religious. Tita Noli hesitated. She felt she wasn't ready. She even told her that time when Uncle Jun introduced himself to her at church and asked for her number. Tita Lourdes was curious who the guy was so she asked my aunt what his name was. When Tita Noli told her his name, Tita Lourdes got excited and told her, he's the man I would like you to meet. That is when their love story began. They've been married for 25 years.

Our Ninang

March 7, 2021
Me and my siblings all call tita Noli our “Ninang”.
I was never really sure why we all called her Ninang but she had played that role to all 4 of us.
Ninang means godmother.
And for all intensive purpose she truly was one and more.
She always made it a point to check on all of us in whatever way possible. Would always would remind us, especially me to keep a good check on my health.
She would always call me to ask me how I was doing, and would always always remind me to go see my doctor to make sure everything is okay.
She never failed to send me greeting cards on every holiday especially every birthday. In fact she never failed on anything for us.
She was just always there. A constant second mother figure, who had nothing to offer but this tremendous outpouring of love, care and concern.
And now that she is gone, there is just this deep void now, that while I know will remain painful for us, also means something good for her.
She is now pain free and at peace.
For more than 30 years, she had also fought cancer. She didn't let it define her. She had lived her life beautifully.
She will always be that one Ninang to us, whom I now will forever miss.
