ForeverMissed

Dedication written by Angelique de Montbrun:
*Papa God must be smiling today, you’re back. *
We sat and talked about what the journey back was like, I asked her if she arrived back on Grand Anse beach and was she welcomed by everyone waiting for her. She would no doubt be handed a rum and coke right away, and someone from the crowd would yell “the party can start NOW, Margaret is here” - cuatro in hand music would fill the air along with roaring laughter - she arrived home, finally.
I asked her if it were true, that death was all of the good things you did in life coming back to you, and I imagined her wrapped in all of the love she extended in her lifetime, wrapped in all of the head scratches, and back scratches, and squeeze ups, and love ups and bites that pierced our skin with a love that was all consuming.
I asked her if she wanted me to play some music, and I imagined that maybe the sound of her rendition of Ava Maria, at midnight mass while I marvelled from my pew, is what the after sounds like.
She didn’t answer, but I know.
Every time I go “back home” I will think of her.
Every time I laugh until I cry (or pee, a little) I will know she is in the room.
And when I squeeze my babies so tight and bite them it will be because she taught me that kind of love.
When I have one too many rums and let the melody of any song carry through my body, it will be in celebration of her.
She was all things to many people, including me, one of my great loves.
The world was always more possible, always more joyful, and always more mischievous, with her.
Papa God must be smiling today, you’re back.

Our condolences got out to the Gouveia and Herrera families.
Our fond memories of Margaret will always remain of wonderful times of fun and laughter. Picking her up and going for roti and curry or any west indian foods. She had a beautiful spirit, a beautiful voice and was always a joy to be around. May you rest in peace dear Margaret as we know you are in Heaven with our creator. Love and prayers will be said daily for you. It would not be the same visiting Toronto, without you being there!

I was so sorry to learn of Margaret's passing. She was a lovely person to be with and to work with. I first met her at St. Martin De Porres School...she was our music teacher. Margaret was so full of life and so gifted with her music. After teaching we met up with school friends in Stouffville for lunch. It was such fun to get together and reminisce. I actually met her daughter Kathy at one of our lunches; such a pleasure to meet one of her children.
God bless her family and my thanks for having known her.

Gary, our girls and I would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the family. Margaret and I sang in The St. Barnabas Choir. She sang at our wedding and helped us buy our first home while she was at Re/max. We remember her jokes, laughter and beautiful personality. I know she is singing with the Choir in Heaven and maybe she has even taken the Lead :). May her spirit shine in all of us and may God's arms comfort the family at this time. Rest in Peace Margaret. I'm so happy you were part of our life.

I worked with Margaret for many years at both St Barnabas and Good Shepherd. She was certainly one of a kind. A voice like an angel and a wonderfull, bawdy sense of humor. No doubt it is only a matter of time before she takes over heaven's choir.
HUSH, quiet now, for she is with her God.

To the loving family of Margaret: You have lost your mom, granny, sister, aunt and cousin, I have lost a very dear friend.

I have known Margaret for over forty years and if I were to write just 10% of the great memories we shared it will take hundred of pages. We shared laughters, joy crazy things and insults to each others. I remembered at practice in Church Margaret said, "I need some money, maybe I should sell my body" I said to her "If you sell it by the pound you would get much more", I had to run out the Church. Apart from a great sense of humour, she had the most amazing voice of anyone I Know. She discipline me when I make a mistake on the Guitar and I appreciated that.

She Loved some Guyanese special dishes. Every Christmas Cherry and I would make Pepper Pot, Garlic Pork, Black Cake, Ginger Beer, Sorrel and Bread, she would say "This is Heaven."

I am very heart broken to loose such a dear bubbly talented special friend.

May your soul rest in peace in Paradise.

Not one but two fully starched can can skirts Margaret insisted on wearing under her skirt when she stood on stage. The 1956 musical festival competition in British Guiana was an event that gave us a feeling of great joy. Margaret won every event and as she was receiving her awards Dad got up and yelled "That's my daughter". We will miss our beloved sister. May she rest in peace.

Even though not a blood relative Auntie Margaret as we all called her had such a powerful impact on all of our lives as teenagers in Grenada and Barbados.  She was a strong life force with a whit, a laugh and a voice like no other. Dennis and I had the gift of Auntie Margaret singing at our wedding. I know she’s now in heaven organizing the choir. Deepest condolences to Richard, Kathy-Ann, Stephen, Lisa, Wendy-Sue and all the Gouveia, Herrera families.

Our hearts feel the weight of Margaret's passing. This one stings a lot. But,fortunately for us we have known her for nearly fourty years. So many wonderful memories: jokes, parties, food, church, dances, etc. She sang at my dad's funeral in 1997, what a great tribute for my family. A unique individual who will always be remembered. God bless you Marg, sing in Heaven, until we meet again.
Hugs and Kisses forever.

CELEBRATIONS FOR MARGARET HERRERA

We said goodbye to Mum one week ago and because of the lockdown in Toronto at the moment, we are not able to celebrate Mum's life in the church until the lockdown is over. What we are happy to announce is that quite a few memorials have taken place, including one by her sibling David & Mano. A number of masses are being said for Mum at various churches around the world including a mass that was said the day of her passing in Grenada attended by our family in Grenada.

Prayers will be said at St. Mark's in Stouffville on Saturday by Father Leslie, followed by a private mass on Monday 26th April by Father Michael which cannot be attended due to the lockdown, but we MAY be able to attend as they are trying to have it televised. More information to come and we will let you know the time of the mass if they are able to arrange for it to be televised.

In following Mum's wishes, she is being cremated and after celebrating her life in Canada, she will return home to Grenada where she will be laid to rest with a mass, followed by a party on the Rhum Runner with steelband - a true celebration of life as only Mum would want.

In the meantime, have a "rum and coke" to toast this amazing woman!

Auntie Margaret, your joie de vivre was unstoppable and inspiring. You gave big love to soo many of us, it seemed like an endless supply to go around. Listening to your magical voice brings such sweet memories, it makes saying goodbye feel impossible.

While our heads are hung low and our hearts are torn in two, we find comfort knowing that you’re singing your heart out once again and reconnecting with loved ones passed. I imagine the most epic and joyful reunion. Rest In Peace my beloved Aunt and Godmother, you will be greatly missed and will live on forever in all of the hearts you touched - certainly in mine. Meet you on Grand Anse soon.

Love,
Renée

Her Life

A chapter biography - written by daughter, Kathy Ann.

April 25, 2021
We celebrate the life of a legend, our wonderful mother Margaret Amelia Herrera nee Gouveia who went to Papa God on Wednesday 14th April, 2021. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with all of her heart; she was blessed with the voice of an angel and was happiest when she was singing (which brought extreme happiness to everyone else) – Mum won Solo Soprano at the Music Festival of the Caribbean and South America in Guyana in 1956 when she was around 17 and a scholarship to Oxford which she regrettably was not able to peruse as she could not afford to travel to England at that time; in their early days of moving to Grenada after they were married, Mum was a big part in building Herrera’s Furniture, including driving the delivery van to deliver furniture to customers and collecting outstanding monies (when they saw her coming they would find the cash immediately); she laughed her way through life and helped others see the brighter side of life with her wit and humour; strong willed and independent – traits that we have all inherited; she had a vivacious personality which was evident as she entered a room; a good fete was made more enjoyable with her presence – dancing, bottle and spoon and cuatro playing to liven up the party; there was no end to her compassion and love for everyone she met which is evident in the outpouring of sadness from so many people around the world – Mum certainly practiced the “Golden Rule”; she was also known for not holding back her opinions, telling it like it was and an expert at “cussing” people when necessary – if you were lucky enough to receive a good f-sharp from Margaret it usually lead to a lifetime of friendship with her; despite all the challenges she faced in life she found solutions and the courage to move forward as she met each one head on – and there were many; because of her positive outlook on life she was able to achieve so much and was successful in all her career endeavours including being a Platinum level Real Estate agent, Elementary School Music Teacher and Choir leader at many churches in Grenada and Canada; her creativity knew no bounds from creating carnival costumes, directing plays, singing at the Cathedral in St. George’s, training the choirs at SJC, painting and designing sets; Mum was surrounded by a huge support system including her siblings, in-laws, friends, co-workers, children and family; she is survived by her children Richard, Kathy Ann, Stephen, Lisa and Wendi as well as her grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews who loved her.  We love forever Mum, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

CHLOE & GRANNY A TRUE LOVE STORY

My 5-year-old dog Chloe and I have been sharing our time as SJA Therapy Dog/Handler Volunteers for just over three years now, however, my sweet pup has been giving her love and comfort to Margaret long before she became an official therapy dog on January 24, 2018. I would like to retell of a great love story between Margaret and her grand-puppy Chloe.

Margaret and I go way back to the choir of St Barnabas Church. We’ve known each other over 40 years. Although we started as choristers and friends, time turned our relationship into soul-sisters. I visited Margaret wherever the spirit moved her to reside and when she thankfully moved into Providence in the Spring of 2017, I visited as often as I could. Margaret had met Chloe when she was just a couple of months old and living in Stouffville. They became fast friends. After deciding to enroll Chloe in the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Testing, and passing, I requested us to be placed at Providence.

Chloe has displayed great affection and sensitivity with all her Providence friends; however, her excitement knew no bounds when we entered Elm House, whereupon she would take the lead to room 201 where her granny Margaret resided. She would prance into the room and if Granny was laying on the bed, she would jump onto it to let her know “I’M HERE!” Margaret would squeal with joy and the two would hug, romp and give kisses. It was always a special visit that left Margaret happy and wishing she could keep Chloe with her always. The feeling was mutual because Chloe always dawdled when it was time to leave.

Many was the time I would get a video call from Margaret on Whatsapp just so she could see her baby (even before 7 am at times). She would ask for kisses and I would have to oblige Chloe kissing me thoroughly because the phone was not an option for my little pup. Margaret would giggle and squeal in delight while she kissed her phone.

The pandemic stopped the wonderful, in-person visits with Margaret and it took its toll on her health and well-being. She lost the ability to use her cell phone so Whatsapp visits ended. Margaret’s illness also removed her ability to speak so phone calls became impossible. Knowing how much seeing Chloe meant to her, I had to find another way. On February 9, 2021, Chloe and I had our first Skype call with Margaret. Oh, the joy! Smiles, laughter, lots of wet, puppy kisses from Chloe to me (for Granny) and many kisses from Margaret to Chloe on her tablet. We so looked forward to these weekly half-hour visits. Tuesday, April 13, 2021, was our last Skype visit with Granny. I say farewell to a great friend, my soul-sister. I don’t know how Chloe will react when we can once again walk through the doors of Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence. She hasn’t been able to say her good-bye to Margaret. I am, however, so happy that Chloe was able to have that final puppy-kissing session with Granny!

Rest in peace my dearest friend. Until we meet again in that glorious choir in heaven. xoxo

David and I will be lighting a candle this afternoon at 4 PM. We will be doing a meditation, prayer, a deep listening time to embrace Margaret's spirit from 4 PM to 5 PM. If anyone wants to join us in silence please do so. Margaret’s beautiful song voice and her laugh will remain with us forever.

When we visited Margaret at Providence Village we were there at lunchtime. Margaret would put a serviette so tenderly under a man’s shirt at the table. She picked up his soup spoon and encouraged him to partake of these nutrients. She fed him. She would say to him “come on Tom you need to eat. The soup today is so delicious.” Margaret was always serving. May we today give back some of what she has given us. Let us listen deeply today to the messages she is giving us.

I just wanted to express my deepest sympathy in the passing of Margaret.

It was very sad to open my email Thursday morning to learn of her passing, I thought we had more time with her.

I have a lot of nice memories of Margaret’s time here on the unit. I will always remember how much she cared about the other residents, always looking out for them and advocating for them. For example, Margaret would walk by a resident and if they called out to her she would go over to them, hold their hand and ask them if they were okay. If they said they were cold Margaret would go to their room and get them a blanket. These random everyday acts of kindness showed me the wonderful caring person she was.
