Her Life

A chapter biography - written by daughter, Kathy Ann.

April 25, 2021
We celebrate the life of a legend, our wonderful mother Margaret Amelia Herrera nee Gouveia who went to Papa God on Wednesday 14th April, 2021. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with all of her heart; she was blessed with the voice of an angel and was happiest when she was singing (which brought extreme happiness to everyone else) – Mum won Solo Soprano at the Music Festival of the Caribbean and South America in Guyana in 1956 when she was around 17 and a scholarship to Oxford which she regrettably was not able to peruse as she could not afford to travel to England at that time; in their early days of moving to Grenada after they were married, Mum was a big part in building Herrera’s Furniture, including driving the delivery van to deliver furniture to customers and collecting outstanding monies (when they saw her coming they would find the cash immediately); she laughed her way through life and helped others see the brighter side of life with her wit and humour; strong willed and independent – traits that we have all inherited; she had a vivacious personality which was evident as she entered a room; a good fete was made more enjoyable with her presence – dancing, bottle and spoon and cuatro playing to liven up the party; there was no end to her compassion and love for everyone she met which is evident in the outpouring of sadness from so many people around the world – Mum certainly practiced the “Golden Rule”; she was also known for not holding back her opinions, telling it like it was and an expert at “cussing” people when necessary – if you were lucky enough to receive a good f-sharp from Margaret it usually lead to a lifetime of friendship with her; despite all the challenges she faced in life she found solutions and the courage to move forward as she met each one head on – and there were many; because of her positive outlook on life she was able to achieve so much and was successful in all her career endeavours including being a Platinum level Real Estate agent, Elementary School Music Teacher and Choir leader at many churches in Grenada and Canada; her creativity knew no bounds from creating carnival costumes, directing plays, singing at the Cathedral in St. George’s, training the choirs at SJC, painting and designing sets; Mum was surrounded by a huge support system including her siblings, in-laws, friends, co-workers, children and family; she is survived by her children Richard, Kathy Ann, Stephen, Lisa and Wendi as well as her grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews who loved her.  We love forever Mum, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.
