Margaret had both the compassion and the vision to create the BBS - the strong and enduring partnership between patients and professionals that has resulted is her legacy, for which I am truly grateful

I'm so saddened to hear of Margaret's passing. I'm not sure how the Brittle Bone Society initially got in touch with my family (probably via a doctor's referral as the medical community didn't have much info on it back in the 70s). However for as long as I can remember the BBS has been part of my life, via newsletters from Margaret when I was little, to now the online connection which is a great source of information and comfort, ensuring myself and fellow sufferers are up to speed with latest developments and news of our rare disease. I thank you Margaret. Thinking of all her family and friends at this sad time. RIP x From Sharon Murphy (McLeish and the McLeish family who you helped enormously)

Lovely lady; you calmed my fears and helped me understand all that OI is when my wonderful son was born. He is now 26 years old, independently living and working. Awesome lady; your early input to our wee family put us on the right path, you guided us along with love and encouragement. You are sorely missed. God has surely taken one of his favourite angels home.

32 years ago in Feb 2021 I first spoke to Margaret when I had my precious but fragile daughter. I will never forget her calming and very practical approach to a situation that scared me beyond words. She provided the words and thoughts I needed to get started on a new journey - a journey to support my daughter in everything that has now made her an independent and successful young woman. Margaret will be missed and especially by all the new families who are just beginning their journeys xxxxx

Margaret Grant will forever be remembered by those who had the opportunity to meet her. I did for the first time in 1993, when her "big "OI Baby", the BBS, invited us international guests to Northampton to enjoy a big annual conference. We did so much enjoy the company and the foundation of the European OI Federation OIFE! Ever since have we been in contact with the Grant family and our UK friends. But Maggie Grant is as well known to many people around the globe, who never met this inspiring and dedicated woman, because she was THE OI-pioneer and set example to so many others. We in Germany would perhaps not have our national OI society, that was founded in 1984, if our first chairman had not met Margaret and enjoyed BBS-OI-conferences before. Forever grateful for planting the first seed for our international and so supportive "OI-family"!

Margaret heard of us through a mutual friend and rang me several times when Ben was a tiny baby. She was so kind- she showed such compassion and empathy at a point when I knew nothing about OI and had no one to talk to. She sent hand knitted baby clothes ! I am so grateful to God for her just from an individual perspective but as time went in I realised what she had done in starting the BBS and the work she put into that support on a much bigger stage. A wonderful woman and amazing role model for us all.

I would just like to thank Margaret for all of the hard work and dedication in the formation of the Brittle Bone society. I am now 34 years old and when I was born my parents faced into the unknown here in Cork, the Republic of Ireland. But thank god my father got a hold of you and you shined hope on the condition. May you Rest In Peace and best wishes to your family at this tough time ❤️

I was saddened to hear of Margaret’s passing, she really was a remarkable woman who has helped thousands of people come to an understanding of what living with OI is all about and mor than that she helped ensure that people’s lives were made a little easier by finding help, equipment and funding to, aid that.

My thoughts are with David and Yvonne , she will leave a massive hole in their lives but also in the hearts of many.

We will always remember the first phone call we ever recieved from Margaret after our daughter Penny was born. From that call she gave our family the strength to cope. She will always have a special place in our hearts. God Bless.

The OI community has been blessed with several strong female leaders. Margaret Grant was one of them, and it is safe to say that her legacy reaches far beyond the UK borders. Taking inspiration from her and the work she did establishing the Brittle Bone Society in 1968, several other national OI organizations followed. The Norwegian Osteogenesis Imperfecta Association (NFOI), founded in 1979, was one of them. Margaret’s support and guidance was vital to the establishment of NFOI. It is with gratitude we remember Margaret Grant.

Margaret was always a supportive presence in my life, at good times and bad. Her warmth, commitment and love burned bright through the years - and that light lives on through the Society that she created. I have so much to thank her for. My thoughts are with David and Yvonne and all those who loved her. Her Life
December 14, 2020
Margaret was the founder of The Brittle Bone Society, the UK’s leading charity for the support of people with the rare bone condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).

She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dundee in 2018, the year of the charity’s 50th Anniversary. She also received: Dundee Citizen of the year 1975, OIF (Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation (USA) award 1982 for hosting the first international conference for people with OI with another award from the OIF in 1990. In 1988 Margaret was given the Tunstall Telecoms National caring award.

Born in Dundee on 29th June 1933, Margaret is survived by her loving husband David and her daughter Yvonne, who has also served as a trustee of the charity for many years. The family want her to be remembered with happiness, laughter and smiles, especially for all the little children with OI, who were so close to her heart.

Margaret was born with OI and from an early age realised that there was no support for people with the condition and that medical professionals knew little or nothing about diagnosing or treating it. When her daughter Yvonne was born with OI some years later, very little had changed and in 1968 Margaret established the Brittle Bone Society. She was its driving force for decades and her outstanding achievement was recognised when she was awarded an MBE in 1989.

The Society now has thousands of members and supporters and works closely with NHS specialised hospitals and world leading healthcare professionals throughout the UK and beyond.

The Society continues to provide front line support to this day and raises thousands of pounds each year towards the supply of wheelchairs and equipment and to promote better care in the sector. Furthering research was important to Margaret and the Society’s research programme are now funding a number of important research projects. The history of the charity’s much prized early work that Margaret pioneered has been entrusted to the University of Dundee which is archiving and preserving the charity’s past in order to record its immense impact on the care of people with OI.

It was such an honour to begin working for the BBS Charity late 2009. Soon after joining I was introduced to Margaret Grant at her home in Dundee, where she made me so welcome. Her husband David and Yvonne their daughter (and Trustee) were so hospitable to me on the day. We had a lovely lunch and Margaret chatted for for some time about the background of her beloved Charity. I knew I had a big job ahead to continue with the programme of support for the OI community and to devise new systems that would ensure whilst modernising - the heart of the BBS would continue and not be lost in any new plans. It was a privelage to have known her, and witness the impact her dedication to set up the society was all those years ago. Her regular notes of encouragement to me continued. One funny story was a very cold and blustery wishbone day a few years later. We were hosting an outdoor event but the Tent almost blew off into the four winds and we were all very cold!!! Margaret pointed out that there should be another date  to celebrate this occasion for this for those of us who lived in the Northern hemisphere - if we must insist on outdoor gala meets. I am so glad to have met her. May she rest in peace.
