Her Life

Biography

May 1, 2012

Margaret was born in Brooklyn and spent most of her childhood in Queens Village with her younger brothers, Jerry and Edward.  She met and fell for Jack Speed at Queens College, where he was the President of the student body and she was the Secretary.  They moved to Chicago so that they could be together while Jack attended Business School at the University of Chicago.  Jack and Margaret were married in Chicago on July 1, 1943.  When Jack enlisted in the Navy, the pair moved down to the Gulf of Mexico where they had their first son, John, in Key West.

Margaret and Jack raised their four boys, John, Chris, Malcolm, and Mark, in various regions of NY including Avenue D, Albertson (Long Island), East Greenbush, and Riverdale.  The boys enjoyed living upstate, where they had the freedom to explore. Margaret volunteered her free time at a hospital emergency room.

After the kids had grown up, Jack and Margaret moved to Waterside Plaza on the East Side of Manhattan and spent over 30 years together there, enjoying the water views and city life.  Their family continued to grow, as their sons married and had families of their own.  Christmas holidays were always a memorable time for the entire extended family to get together and sing out-of-tune Christmas carols, gather around the spinach dip, and catch up with one another.
