Halloween at 209 E 2nd St.

October 30, 2010

How apppropriate that my memory/story is about Halloween night at the Hugebacks. I spent many high school halloween nights entertaining trick-or-treaters with Suzie and Margaret.  As I remember it, there was a bench near the front door of that house at 209 E 2nd and Suzie and I would stand on the bench while Margaret would pass out the treats.  Then we'd jump down and scare the trick-or-treaters.  I can still hear Margaret laugh at our trick.  Great memories there at the Hugeback house!

Also,  there are times when I think of a certain person or thing and I think of the Hugeback house every time I  have to cllimb a large flight of stairs. (The Hugeback stairs were easy to climb). I didn't know that Margaret designed that house, and I'll never forget the shallow or short steps on that lovely open stairway,  I think of that stairway often, and how easy it was to go up because the steps were not quite as high as every other stairway.  Margaret was certainly thinking when she designed that!

Lots of happy memories, but those are just a few.

I remember mom's courage. We went to Mass one early icy morning when I was in junior high, and after Mass, she slipped on the ice, falling on her arm. She got up with a few tears streaming down her cheeks, but she made no fuss and said she would be just fine. Two days later we learned that she had a broken arm! She was always a woman of grit, faith, and courage!

Mom took me to Omaha and found Brandeis for me. When my veins broke, she came. When I fell out of the bus, she came. Then I had polyps in my nose, and she came. I had a tumor removed, and she came. I got robbed and Mom always came from Carroll to help me.
