May 13, 2017

The first Mother’s Day without my mother

May 13, 2017

Today I am feeling what I had never felt. My mother went to glory last year and I cannot celebrate this Mother’s Day with her. God gave me the joy of having a mother like Margarita Carbonell Soto. I was able to enjoy her for over 63 years. It seemed that she would live forever because she lived until she was 98 years old. She was an exemplary mother, especially since she did so without the help of my father. She worked very hard to provide for Juan Luis and myself. She never complained nor was a victim but a great fighter; She always pushed forward. When we were short of money, she cooked “alcapurrias” and “pasteles” to sell them to raise funds. She had a great repertoire of sayings that one day I will collect and share them with everyone. She made me appreciate music, because the stereo was always on playing music; from classical, semi classical, boleros, and waltzes. There was music in English and Spanish and she was the one that bought me my first Beatles album.

My dear mother I love you and I miss you, but I know we will see each other again one day. This hope gives me peace and sustains me.
