Margie the sweetest person and angel in my life! You came into our lives when you moved to L.A.. What a blessing! You were 19 and Czarina and I were 11years old. You were young and so pretty! You were the big sister we never had! Our mom was working 2 jobs and we were unsupervised and you took us under your wings ☺. Young as you were you took us so many places with you, the beach, bowling, etc. two little brats! We learned you were the big sister but also the mom you had to listened to! As time went on in came Melvin and you both embraced us! Next came Ida, Julie and Myrtle. Oh the fun we had staying with you all in Pedro! Here I am 69 years old and...Thank you isn't enough for the love, guidance, support help, home and family you provided. I love you dearly! Always & forever!!! Charlotte

Margie, thank you for all you did. No words can express the mark you have left for the many future generations. Visiting you in my childhood I always left learning something new. Your voice is one that will never be forgotten. If I get nervous and look at my nails, I can hear you telling me "you better stop biting your nails". Everything you said to me as a child and adult was a lesson and came from love. I hope to carry on my passion for family history such as you. Your presence will be missed but never forgotten.

With love and gratitude, Jessica

Margie you were always there! Always the one to show up and care for my family. You encouraged my mother “Z” when she needed it most. Pushed her to achieve her dreams and helped raise me in the process. Took me to school, fed and loved me while my Mom was hard at work trying to create a better life for us. While we were not blood related, you always included us and called us family. I love you soo much Marge. Even though you always fussed at me about biting my nails, made me eat those black eyed peas until I finished my plate, and attempted to tame my wild hair! You were always there for me. Always there for us! You were my angel on earth and I’m forever grateful for your love and support.

More than fifty years ago a young girl and her younger sister came to California to live with their eldest sister Margie, her husband Melvin, and their six-month son Michael. Those two young girls were my younger sister Myrtle and myself. Our mother had died right before Christmas 1967. Margie brought us from Pueblo, Colorado to live with her and to become part of their family. Margie had been asked by our mother to take care of her sisters if something happened to her. Margie and Melvin were just twenty-four years old and had a six-month baby. They had their whole lives ahead of them, but in keeping with mama’s request Margie and Melvin became our parent’s. Believe me we challenged them being twelve and thirteen-year-old girls. Margie loved being around people, as she was the second eldest of eight children. We were all one family and it was so unselfish of her and Melvin to take in two very rambunctious girls that he had never met. We were a family with struggles and challenges that most people could not imagine. Margie: I could never adequately express in words my gratitude for all you have done for me. Thank you for keeping your promise to Mama. May God bless you and with God’s grace I will be seeing you in heaven. I love you.  Julie

Ma,
I love you and may you forever be at peace.
You have made a difference in this world while you were here and you have left an amazing legacy. I am so very proud to call you my "Ma" and that my sons have you to call "Grandmamma".  By your example I have learned to be selfless in nurturing and caring for others. You taught me that a child, no matter where they begin, is worthy of safety, love, care and respect. You have shown me how to care for myself, my children and my husband with vulnerability and unconditionally. You planted a seed in my soul which allows me to love our family and our friends so very deeply. I thank you for these gifts.
I will miss you SO much Ma! I will miss your smile, your wicked side eye as well as you fussin' at me and everyone else who is in ear range. I will miss playing games with you, your jokes and your example of how to LIVE well and do what you want to do despite the pain. I will so very miss how you ALWAYS showed up at my side when I needed you the most.
God has decided that your time here is done. You have fulfilled your purpose. I will pray that God grants me the patience to remember this when my soul cries out for you. I will also remember that this is as God has planned and as I shared with you...I will hurt, I will cry AND I will be okay. I promised you and I meant it.
A leader's job is only done when their followers can step up and carry on when they are no longer able to do so.  Mom you are the epitome of strength and you have been an amazing LEADER who happens to be my mother. Thank you for your love, guidance, nurturance, care and discipline. Ma, your work here on earth is done. You have taught us well; God's got you and we got this!

Ma...
I love you...I love you... I love you...
Marion Andrea

Her Life

The Obituary

November 10, 2020
Margarett Annette Haynes was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Joseph Craiger Johnson Sr. and Marion Elizabeth Wadsworth Johnson on July 18, 1943.  She was the second child and first daughter born of this union.

Although Margarett (Margie) began her life with humble beginnings, she appreciated her roots and drew strength from her experience.  Margie attended Centennial High School where she participated on the track team and sang in the chorus with her brother Craig.  She and her older brother were well known and loved in high school.  As the oldest daughter she was determined to support her family and also to live a life that she desired. Following her High School Graduation, she moved to California with her Uncle James and Aunt Marie. She was 17 years old. Margie began her studies at a local community college, and baby sat her cousin Jimmy while working in various medical offices. Over the years Margie worked as an office manager in a physician's office.

At the age of 21, Margie met and married Melvin Eugene Haynes and from this union she became mother to Miguel Eugene, Marion Andrea, Maisha Anetta and Calesse Wadsworth. At 24 years old, following the death of her mother, she honored her mama’s wishes to care for and nurture her younger sisters; Ida, Julie, and Myrtle.  Margie was a new mother who was intent on  supporting and loving her family unconditionally despite obstacles.

Margie’s love of family included the friendships she developed throughout her life.  While living in San Pedro in the late 1960’s and early 70’s the young couple nurtured a neighborhood of youth and applied humor along with strict structure to support their community.

Margie started a preschool in her garage in the early 70’s where she taught the children in the neighborhood how to read and write.  She facilitated holiday events such as Easter egg hunts in the park, next to their home, which included the neighborhood and extended family.  Although Margie and Melvin divorced in 1976 their collective and individual commitment to family and community did not change. Margie’s home was open to family and friends for fun times and also in their time of need.

Margie was adventurous. She taught ALL of the children, which consisted of her children and the neighborhood children, that she was in fact a track star by relay racing with them around the block and doing hop skip and jump matches in the living room.   She shared her love of bowling with her kids and matched her love of bowling with her love of traveling and caravanned her kids across state lines to participate in bowling tournaments.  Marge enjoyed driving and in the 1980’s purchased motorhomes and trekked all who would join her across the USA going to the Wadsworth Family reunions, visiting family and friends in various states, and going up and down the coast of California to camp at the beach and in the mountains.

Margie was a connector of people.  She looked forward to participating in the Wadsworth Family Reunions over the years as they allowed her to be in fellowship with her loved ones and provided an opportunity to seek out other family members she did not yet know.  She held the role of the family reunion committee’s Historian and she took her duties very seriously.  Afterwards, Margie continued collecting intricate details of family members while influencing others to seek out their roots.

The life lessons, love and mischievous behaviors she shared with her kids were lovingly shared with her grandchildren as she earned the beloved title of “Grandmamma” in 1999.  She went on many adventures and participated in many activities with her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing games with them and as she did with her kids, she would often cheat.

Margie’s determination was extraordinary.  Margie’s career ended after suffering a back injury which caused her to be disabled.  Despite her health challenges she decided to move to Hemet, California. Years following this set-back, she suffered multiple strokes which impacted her speech, yet did not silence her.  Margie was determined to do what she wanted to do regardless of the multitude of physical challenges she faced. She held on to a wish she had her entire life which was to return to Pueblo, Colorado to live in the Wadsworth family home where her mother was born and raised.  In 2019 her wish was fulfilled with the support of her brother Gary and her sister-in-law Fannie; Margie returned to her hometown and lived in the Wadsworth home on Palmer.

During the last few months of Margie’s life she illustrated the values she held dear; resiliency in the face of adversity and her deep love and commitment to family and community.  Margie was diagnosed with cancer on her 77th birthday and immediately decided that she would do all in her power to maximize the time she had left by spending quality time with her family and friends.  Although she understood the sunset of her life was near, she continued to bless her family and friends with humor, affection and gratitude.

Margie peacefully transcended to be with the Lord on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 7:40pm surrounded by her children, grandchildren, sisters, brother, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Margie is preceded in death by her mother, Marion Elizabeth Wadsworth Johnson, her father, Joseph Craiger Johnson, Sr. and her brothers Joseph Craiger Johnson, Jr. and Warren Hillard Johnson.  Margie is survived by her loving siblings; Patricia E. Johnson-Clark and husband Johnny (Gardena, CA), Gary Marion Johnson Sr. and wife Fannie (Pueblo, CO) , Ida Mae Taylor and husband Henry (Carson, CA),  Rachiel Julia (Julie) Benson and husband David (Greenville, SC), Myrtle Edith Johnson (Cleveland, OH), Darlene Johnson (Pueblo, CO), Brian Johnson (Pueblo, CO), Steven Johnson (Pueblo, CO), and Kevin Johnson (Pueblo, CO). She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory, her children; Miguel Eugene Haynes, Marion Andrea Dave and husband Alfonzo Dave  III, Maisha Anetta Walker Deen, Calesse Wadsworth Haynes and grandchildren; Malik Eugene Dawud Lamont Haynes, Nyla Simone Smothers, Alfonzo Dave IV, Julian Eugene Dave, Aman Eugene Haynes, Makeda Marion Akietu Walker Deen, and Xavier Zaire Irving. Margie’s memory will also be cherished by a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of friends.

I met Margie early 1960's thru my best friend Melvin Haynes when they were dating. We double dated a lot, me with my girl then friend Dorothy Marks. When Dorothy and I married Melvin was my Best Man. When Mel and Margie married I was his Best Man. Our families were inseparable, their children and our son were very good friends and on the same bowling team. I am their son Michael's God Father and Mel was  my son Mark's God Father. I was Mel's friend since childhood, and until he passed and Margie's friend even until my dear wife Dorothy passed away. They were still best friends at the time. Margie offered me much comfort then. Margie was a remarkable and loving person whom I personally will miss. Rest in peace Marrgie. With sympathy,

Well, my name is Aaron Walker and I’m a friend of my Maisha and I got the opportunity to meet this wonderful woman last year around the holidays at Maisha’s house. I remember her sitting in the reclining chair eating those alcohol filled chocolates and really enjoying herself. We all had a great conversation which felt like an extended family. I believe this is before she initially left for Colorado. It was a pleasure meeting her for the short time that I did but it was most definitely memorable! God bless and RIH
