Great Teacher

May 19, 2013

Many of you may not have known this about Mari, but just as we were always learning something from her, so too did handfuls of elementary school students whom she volunteered to read to after school. As Florida Future Educators of America participants, we regularly visited a neighboring school & were each assigned a group of small children to connect with through book discussions, craft projects, & similar activities as a means of nurturing our interests and futures in teaching. This is not something I would have naturally pursued on my own, but she had that special way of transferring her enthusiasm of a subject on to us who are less motivated!

Hi Marialla,

I was just reading the stories Erin shared with you and thought back to the time when you and Erin were in front of Leon High by the big sign that originally said, "Thank you, Waste Management for the Trash Cans."  I was getting inpatient with both of you...  You were rearranging letters that Erin handed you.  Finally, I got out of my car to see what you 2 were up to and the sign now said, "Thank you, Waste Management for those Rash Cats!"  I wanted to yell at you both but instead, we all burst out laughing!

You always seemed to appreciate the chocolate chip cookies I made you so I think of you every time I bake them.

I honestly don't know how you two managed to keep from getting into more trouble than you did but you were always very clever and witty.  I really miss you.  My prayers go out to you and your family.  You are truly loved.

Love,
"Erin's Mom," (Adrienne)

Creativity Abounded!

July 5, 2012

Girlie, just randomly remembering the song you wrote for my cat Midnight about shoes, his greatest passion. Not many cats can say they have a personal soundtrack, and one of such a catchy tune for that matter! I hear us - you - singing it at ear-shattering decibel levels, oblivious to the world...a bold freedom that only comes with having one's best friend by her side. Someday my unborn children will sing this to their pets! Love you.

MORNING MEMORIES

June 21, 2012

As I sit here this morning with my first cup of coffee, I suddenly have flashbacks to sipping it with you at school...remembering we got offended by the nearby gas station demanding we leave backpacks outside after months of patronage & decided to bring it from home. You knew I loved those Barnie's coffee coolers but was inept at making anything palatable, so you began mixing them for us to share each day. I now segue to our lunchbreaks, when in a whole-hearted attempt to diet, we agreed to split everything we ate. ("Half the calories = twice the fun!") We alternated BaskinRobbins kiddie cups & single Sbarro breadsticks - you spoon-feeding me as I drove! I dropped like 50 pounds that year & have kept it up ever since. I want you to know I can never eat more than half of anything now, at a time. I wonder...perhaps I am subconsciously saving your place *_^

Making Peace

May 21, 2012

Mari, as my middle & high school BFF, my sis from another miss, my partner in crime, we share so many blush-worthy stories, but of all those, there is one I keep returning to since losing you which particularly stands out as appropriate for this site: that time when your kind gesture neary brought me to tears! We always had a healthy competition going, but of course with you being the best at whatever you took on, I tried to keep my talent with the camera a secret and signed up for that photography class. When you walked in, there went my thunder, so I childishly gave you the silent treatment for a few weeks. We continued on in that manner until I went out to my car on one stormy night and found wet gum stuck in my door handle. When I confronted you, I learned that you had gone out there in the rain to leave that stick of gum as a peace offering, not quite understanding what was wrong but just missing your bratty friend enough to make the first move. I am so glad you did, though, as I was immediately humbled by this simple and sweet act, and rightfully so! My frustration melted away, to be replaced with an appreciation for true friendship, which has no time for false pride.

I'm sure some funnier stories will come to mind in the near future, but that's a big one in our history.

No Goodbyes: Your mom was asking me about "Ign!" the other day. I had trouble remembering how that worked its way into our vocabulary at first, but it goes back to us laughing about a comedy with an illiterate guy who stumbled over the word ignition. We used to get on the phone with each other to watch TV when we couldn't hang out together, and because we always refused to say goodbye, we jokingly ended the call with "Ign!" and it just stuck. (For those reading this who knew about ign, finally you have the etymology!) I could never tell you goodbye :)

Love,
Erin
