To Heaven's Gates
we wish to fly
out of this world
across the sky

To Heaven's Gates
our souls are seeking
the angel's lyres
and voices speaking

To Heaven's Gates
our lifelong journey
not through these halls
atop a gurney

To Heaven's Gates
you start to weep
reminded
I was never yours to keep

To Heaven's Gates
why mourn with sorrow?
Morning shall come
there will be a tomorrow

To Heaven's Gates
I view their glory
glancing behind
I close my story

At Heaven's Gates
I find myself
not bruised, not broken
nor on the Shelf

At Heaven's Gates
I hear you cry
and remind you,
this isn't really goodbye

May Mrs Kieran rest in piece. And keep strong uncle Patrick

Marilyn was a patient, kind and learned advisor. She and Patrick helped me learn about the issues important to retailers and were always willing to instruct and correct in the kindest of ways. She was a friend and always a pleasure to be around. Her intellect, wit and charm - warm smile and ever welcoming cheer will be missed.

We Eliasons met Marilyn and Patrick just 1 1/2 years ago. We were fellow passengers on a 42-day cruise from Singapore to Southampton. We struck up a conversation at one of the meals in the Lido and agreed to meet again to share a meal together. From that time on we attended the Formal Dinners together and found ourselves often on the same tours or exploring the same sights in the many port areas. Months later Marilyn, Patrick, Dan and I also enjoyed several magical days together at Pebble Beach during the 2014 Christmas Season.
Though our time of friendship was short, we treasure the rapport we had found with them. We discovered we are fellow adventurers and travelers…that the world is ours to explore. We all liked food…..and loved to talk about it.  Marilyn and I were both Midwestern girls…. who had attended Purdue University. Dan and I saw in Marilyn and Patrick the tender love and respect for one another.... that we strive for in our relationship. We shared a commitment to our respective religions…. and our mutual devotion to living the principles.
Many of you have mentioned Marilyn’s infectious smile. We noticed it, too, and how she made others feel so good with that genuine smile and expressions of interest. What an amazing team Patrick and Marilyn were. We feel certain they will continue their love affair in the eternities.

The first time I met Marilyn, she looked at me with a deep, caring smile. A smile that engaged every facial muscle… and then she threw in a warm hug just to make sure I got it. She made me feel in that moment that I was the only thing that mattered. The words came easy and the effect hung like a fine fragrance.

Marilyn was a great story-teller and she was excited to share her latest yarn. We had some great moments sitting around the table. Laughs peppered with what may be. The time melted away.

She adored her Patrick, and to us they were inseparable. Looking out for each other, sharing the moment, turning curiosity into another adventure and new back roads. The Christmas letter was a reminder of what sharing life together really means.

One thing I appreciated more than I said, was how Marilyn looked out for me, especially in the early days of my grocery career. She instinctively knew where I was “green” on the job, and never hesitated to suggest a way forward. Subtle, and with a virtual hand on my shoulder. She always had my back but it was never obvious. Thank you for caring with that watchful eye, a reassuring gesture and support that continued to surprise.

Over the years we became deeper friends. She embraced my new life with Jo with a warmth and a caring that morphed into anticipated visits and time together. Whether shopping at Costco, sharing stories over dinner, or a walk about town, we left with so much more than we came with.

We’ll always miss you Marilyn.

Nick

When I started spending time with Nick – and joining him on travels and corporate events…I was in unfamiliar territory. Marilyn had an uncanny way of knowing when I wasn’t comfortable or needed a little back up…and reassurance….she never let me down. When I think of Marilyn, the words kind: thoughtful; and generous of spirit are the words that first come to mind…..Share group meetings are not going to be the same without her ….

I had the privilege of knowing Marilyn for way too little time. There are some people in this world who just make everybody else feel special. Marilyn was one of those people..a kind, giving, selfless person who could only think the best of others. In a crowd looking for Marilyn it never took long to connect, her magical smile made her standout in any company. She was so young Patrick, but now she is in a good place and will be dearly remembered.

We so fondly remember so many times over the past twenty five years that we enjoyed being in Marilyn's company. She was a major force in buying the Carillon house in Colorado Springs and furnishing it so well for all of us (especially the Kellers), to enjoy. She was active in FICAH and a force in beginning the FICAH/Carillon Golf Tournament hosted in Colorado Springs that raised a lot of money to fight hunger around the world.
She was a wonderful hostess and friend and we remember some wonderful Christmas events that Marilyn and Patrick hosted at their Washington home as well as our visit to the Carillon house just this past summer.
We were blessed to have known her and to have shared some time with her all these many years. We will miss her greatly. There was no one with a more generous heart.

My dear friend, I can't tell you how sad this makes me. While I will and do celebrate Marilyn's enduring spirit, one is never quite ready to say goodbye. I've experienced it with my daughter, mother and father and while I still miss them, I sense their love nearby and always. Such I am sure is the same for you with Marilyn.

The two of you were without any compare they loveliest couple I always looked forward to being with over the years. Be it at the Greenbriar, Broadmore, Washington DC... I would always head to the opening reception so excited to look for both of you. Of course that is because of Marilyn and your honest, genuine way. You cared about others and we knew it always. Givers both and always. I loved you both for your kindness and support.

I was very fortunate to have been a recipient of Marilyn's love over the years. As hard as it is to say goodbye for now, she will continue to love you for the rest of your life. I wish I could do more to help but pray the knowing of where she is now will bring you some comfort in time. And I will ask my daughter Colleen Rose to look Marilyn up as she will want to know the one who was so kind to her Dad, and to thank her for it.

I always felt a connection to Marilyn as well since we were raised within a few miles of one another in a simply wonderful part of Chicago. If memory serves me right she may have attended Resurrection High School immediately across the street from Resurrection hospital where I was born. In fact, I was just in Park Ridge two weekends ago at an all grade school class reunion at Mary, Seat of Wisdom just down the road from Resurrection. I may be heading back tomorrow for a Taste of Park Ridge and will think of Marilyn.

I wish I could do more to help you Pat. If you can think of anything please let me know. I will be supporting Citizens against Homicide in her memory. I shall miss Marilyn.

Know that I miss you as well my friend.

No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye, you were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. - Author Unknown

Marilyn touched so many hearts, mine was only one.
The list is long and endless, we suffer all undone

Our friend was taken from us, without a last goodbye,
it makes it so much harder, we’re not going to lie.

I feel a piece is missing, a daily greeting missed.
A smile, a laugh a chuckle, a really long,long list.

She touched our hearts in different ways, a laugh, a hug a smile,
a listening ear, a walk outside she’d always take a while.

She cared so much for everyone, men, women or beast,
no matter what the issue was, she did not forget the least.

It’s rare in life where we can see and recognize an angel – but I believe that we were blessed to know Marilyn and call her Friend,
her presence and friendship –
I hope she is smiling now knowing that she was so loved, so adored and so missed!

With the passing of Marilyn I am reminded that only two types of people walk the earth...Givers and Takers....in her we saw the best a giver can be. Never did we come into contact together when she didn't want to make your day better. She would smile, ask what she could do, and take a genuine interest in you. Marilyn just had the gift of people moving towards her so they could share some time and space.

It is very hard for me to think of Marilyn without Patrick. I know they will someday be together again. Until than we must find peace in knowing she is trying to make our world a better place from a better place! I only wish we had one more moment together so I could say thanks for just being you!

It was such sad news at first but maybe it was for our loss, not Marilyn's. And for Patrick's pain. Just know that a spirit that great lives on, just not in the here and now. And the pain is replaced by the good and funny memories.

Marilyn and Patrick have been in my life for the past 11 years through postcards from their various adventures. I got to live vicariously through them without leaving home! For 10 years before that we were lucky enough to travel to the best places for work and while there we got to play.

I think Marilyn enriched all our lives with her curiousity, her zest for life and that infectious laugh. I can still hear it today. And I can still see her smile. There are certain people we will never forget. Marilyn was one of them.

I have nothing but the fondest memories of Marilyn. I particularly enjoyed all the dinners she, Patrick, and I had over the years (there were literally dozens) where we caught each other up on our travels. She was so passionate and curious about seeing the world--India, East Asia, Europe, around the world cruises--you name it, she was there. She (and of course Patrick) even got a chance to live and work in Egypt. The list could go on and on. It was so much fun to compare notes. She was smart and accomplished, but her essence was that she was a wonderful and caring girl from the Midwest who never could have imagined all of the things she did and accomplished in her life. She will be greatly missed by so many of us.

Patrick, your poem for Marilyn, "I am with you always" was straight from your heart, inspiring and thoughtful....so much so that there is little we could add except that we enjoyed our shared moments with you, especially aboard Eagle. Marilyn will surely be with us always. Our warmest thoughts are with you. Rick and Aldeana

The Loss of a Very Dear Friend -

It is with tremendous sadness that I share with you about the loss of a very dear and personal friend, Marilyn Day Kiernan. She was a long-time advocate and dedicated member of our Citizens Against Homicide family. She was committed to our cause and freely volunteered her time when and where ever needed. Marilyn was our official greeter at CAH meetings; no one was a stranger and everyone was welcomed with open arms. She contributed many special thoughts and sound ideas that resulted in positive changes for CAH. She had a heart of gold; kind, loving....a perfect example of Humanitarian.

Marilyn and her husband, Patrick, have been neighbors of my husband and me for many years. We stood with them when they married in our home. Marilyn and Patrick were very much a part of my family; sharing in holidays, good times and sad. They watched our children and grandchildren grow.

I speak from my heart (and from the heart of CAH) when I say, "Marilyn, thank you for your love, friendship, dedication and for being an integral part of all our lives. We will always love you and will never forget you."

Marilyn was one who could always bring on a smile every time you would see her. She was infectious. I remember Marilyn as being a 25 year old in spirit and optimism no matter what her age. She was special in this way.

Marilyn was one of our industry icons, though she always maintained a modest and humble profile. That aside, we all still knew she held great sway and influence with many.

I was fortunate that Marilyn helped me in my career. I greatly regret that I hadn't thanked her enough for all she did for me.

Marilyn carried herself with such beauty and grace. I will miss sorely miss this great great lady.

I wish that I could tell you
I'm not ready to let you go.
But you've already departed,
Any my heart is feeling so low.

I miss that little twinkle
That used to light up your eyes.
And I miss your calls and the sound of your voice,
Your laughter and your sighs.

But most of all I miss
The way you made me feel,
Like nothing could ever harm me because
Your concern and love was so strong and real.

There are many others who miss you too
And they will add their tributes here today.
Your life touched so many people,
Who became your friends along the way.

They want you to know they love you, too,
And they're filled with sadness and grief.
No one really wants to say goodbye,
So we'll just wish you eternal peace.

I will always love you and cherish our times together,
Your devoted Sister-in-law, Paula

We little knew that morning
God was to call your name.
In life we loved your dearly,
in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

Your loving brother, Mel

Canticle: There Is a Place

Shared by Patrick Kiernan on 06/30/2015

There's a time for remembering, a time to recall
The trials and the triumphs, the fears and the falls.
There's a time to be grateful for moments so blessed,
The jewels of our mem'ry where love is our guest.

There is gold that is gleaming in the past we once knew,
In our tears and our laughter 'twas love brought us through.
There's a road we have travelled, where sunlight has kissed
That carries us onwards when loved ones are missed.

There is treasure in our fields. There is treasure in our skies.
There is treasure in our dreaming from the soul to the eyes,
For wherever we gather in the light of God's grace,
And for all whom we remember, there will be a place.

There's a promise of God that is written in the stars,
For all who may travel no matter how far,
God will be our companion each journey we make,
In the shadow of loved ones to lighten our ways.

In the guiet of the evening at the close of the day,
We will rest on our journey and to God we will pray.
May we thank God for blessings, the moments we shared
As we seek for tomorrow close by us he'll stay.

I am with you always

Shared by Patrick Kiernan on 06/30/2015

Right now I'm in a different place,
And though we seem apart,
I'm closer than I ever was...
I'm there inside your heart.

I am with you always

I'm with you when you greet each day
And while the sun shines bright,
I'm there to share the sunsets too...
I'm with you every night.

I am with you always

I am with you when the times are good
To share a laugh or two,
And if a tear should start to fall...
I'll still be there for you.

I am with you always

And when that day arrives
That we no longer are apart,
I'll smile and hold you close to me...
Forever in my heart.

I am with you always

Funny Memory

June 22, 2022
Just thinking about Marilyn today and wanted to share a funny story from grade school days. My first memory of her in grade school was of this skinny girl (maybe 1st or second grade) who had pierced ears and wore little hoop earrings. None of the other girls in my school that I knew of had pierced ears. So, of course, with my child’s imagination I assumed that she was a gypsy. There were gypsy groups (Romanians?) who came to Chicago in those days, so it wasn’t that far fetched. Later, when I met her family, I realized she wasn’t a gypsy at all but maybe of Polish heritage like me. We had a few laughs over that. I didn’t get my ears
pierced until my 40th birthday and had to put up with clip on earrings (very painful) for all those years.  Marilyn’s mother was lovely and was always feeding us. Good times

High School Pal

February 3, 2016

Gosh. I just happened on this website looking for old friends and found Marilyn. We were best friends during our grade school and high school years in Chicago. We lost touch with one another when the college years came around. I'm sad to see that she's gone, but it looks like she had a wonderful life. She was an energetic, smart, beautiful person and we shared a lot of growing up secrets during those years.
