Learning To Drive 1957

February 28, 2012

Marge  and I bought our first car, a new 1957 Chevy Bel Aire 4 door Sedan. Tturquoise and white. We had talked little about her driving but I did learned Her Dad had tried and gave up on teaching Her to drive in a stick shift car.  We also moved into our new home in Feb 1957.  Two months later, the US Navy transfered me to Norfolk, VA. Leaving Marge and our two boys to plant grass in our yard and to take care of the car by starting and letting it run to keep the battery charged.
I would come home on week ends either by flying on space available Reserve traing flights or train. The train ride would end in Jax about 10:00AM Sat morning. On this particular morning, I spoted Marge running down the runway and as she got closer, could tell she was crying . I grabed her in my arms and ask what the problem was. Fearing that she or one of the boys had been hurt. Then she starting telling me her story.
On a warn Sunday afternoon before A/C, she was borde and home alone with the boys playing cars. She commanded them to get in the car, they were all going for a ride. The boys got in the back seat, Marge started the engine. It, being cold, was idleing fast. and unknown to Marge to hold down the brake when shifting,  moved the shiftlever out of park. From park, she had to go into drive. When it hit drive Our NEW car went thur the screen porch. of Our NEW home. With that story I started laughing!.Thankful that it wasn;t more serious and amused at Marge's deep concern.  Marge's responce - "Hell, if I knew you were going to laugh, I would have wrote and told you" I LAUGHTED harder. The story gets a little better. After the car stoped, the boys bailed out and ran into the house. Two hours later, still borde and hot, commanded the boys to get back into the car, they were going to go for a ride. The boys begged mercy but had to get in anyway.. This time she did every thing right and she treated them all to ice cream from the ice cream shop on Post Street. Next morning when the men who were building houses showed up for work at 6am she was there pleading for someone come fix our porch. Which they did and I did recover from split sides. Lovingly.
