I have known Mark for quite a few years as a good friend and brother in Christ. If anyone was to ask me about him, I would tell them he was very genuine and caring person who loved the Lord, his family and his friends. He had (and has in heaven) the gifts of love, joy and peace. He was one of the most friendly guys you would ever want to meet. He was a delight to talk to, as I would always leave the conversation cheerier than when I started.  His wife Terry was such a wonderful care giver who took amazingly good care of him, especially during his illness, God will bless her faithfulness. I miss my dear brother and look forward to talking and seeing him again one day.

Mark was such a sweet man. His love for the Lord was so evident by his knowledge of Scripture, his love for others, and his words of encouragment. I will always remember how tender hearted he was. In Sunday School, I often watched him as his eyes would well up with tears of compassion whenever he heard about someone who was going through a tough time.  Even when he was very sick he never complained, he was always smiling, and I never heard him question the "whys" of his suffering. He was always positive, praising God.
Mark loved his precious wife,Terri, and he loved his family. It was so evident by how his face lit up when he talked about any of them. It was a real treat to hear him talk about the family business and see the pride he had in it.
Mark will be greatly missed. I can just see his smile as his savior takes him in his arms. I am sure Mark was filled with complete joy and no longer in pain. So thankful for his complete healing. I look forward to seeing him again one day!

Mark and I were shipmates aboard USCG Cutter Gallatin (WHEC-721) in the mid 70’s. For Mark and I, our tour of duty aboard Gallatin was the most accomplished of our professional career in the Coast Guard. Mark and I were both E-6, leaders in our respective divisions. Mark was a bosun’s mate and I was a sonar technician. We experienced one of the worst storms at sea off Greenland taking two 62 degree snapping rolls that stalled at the end of each roll for a few seconds.

I was Mark’s dentist and I want to let the family know how I felt the vibration of life lifted as soon as I walked into the operatory in Mark’s presence. I see thousands of patients a year and rarely do I feel the magnitude of love Mark had! I know it came from his love of God, the love he had for his family, the love he had for others and his love for life! I have been inspired to do that in my own life and try to replicate that vibration with my attitude for gratitude he conveyed!

Mark was a Saint, a brother and a truly Godly man. The kind of man that you just loved to be around. He was not pretentious or moody; rather he was exactly who he appeared to be on the outside....a kind, friendly soul. I met some of his family today for the first time ever, and I could see HIM in them. So he "LIVES ON" in them, though he isn't with us here anymore. I am so thankful that his terrible battle with pain is over, and he has already heard The Lord say: WELL DONE good and faithful servant. That is exactly what Mark was. Our prayers are with his family.

My husband John and myself first met Mark when we stopped by a new business in Tullahoma, which was of great interest to us. We met the nicest people who were in the very beginning stages of organization of their new business venture. One of the people was Mark, who was so gracious and friendly, and so proud to introduce his family members who were there. I was in awe of the family working together in a dream of opening a business and each one had a field of expertise to lovingly contribute! We stayed in touch, and have enjoyed going there! Mark and his wife Terry were the dearest couple, loving each other and all their family with all their hearts. Our love and prayers go out to all of them at this time. Mark will be greatly missed.

Happy Birthday My Love

On this, your first birthday in Heaven, I am missing you more than ever.

A Rock of Ages Memory

November 3, 2022
I interviewed Mark in 2017 for a magazine article. He shared so many stories with me during that one hour, that I felt like I knew him personally.  I ended up writing a children’s book about one of his experiences.

I see from the tributes here that Mark is known for making desserts. He shared a ghost story he encountered at Rock of Ages Lighthouse, that involved his making a pineapple upside down cake for the men one night. Being a baby boomer myself, I remembered that cake from years ago.  It was a thing when we were young! He was on watch in the kitchen and had to report to Duluth every hour. He’d been baking the cake and dozed off with his legs perched up on a chair. Suddenly, he woke with a start as his legs fell onto the floor. It was time to make his report; he called into Duluth. Then he sat down again and dozed off. Again he woke with a start, legs falling off the chair. It was time to report again. This time, he told me, he sat down and pretended to be asleep. At exactly the time he should be reporting to Duluth, he watched his legs being knocked off that chair.  Mark was convinced the ghost didn’t want him slacking off on his duties!

Several of his stories involved what he was cooking for the men. He said they shared cooking duties but since he loved to cook and bake, he did most of their meal prep. Venison, lake trout, coasters, cakes… the men ate good on his watch!

Although I never met Mark in person, I imagined a twinkle in his eye as he shared his experiences at the lighthouse. I just knew he was an exceptional human.

Thankful for his life of service

November 2, 2022
Our family is so thankful for Mark’s life of service. His kind spirit and gentle heart were present in our lives as a neighbor and friend for many years in Manchester. He was good to our children. I will never forget his compassion for our son Tyler when Tyler was having a very difficult day. Mark was able to calm the storm inside Tyler and help in ways no one else could. Mark was a blessing to his family and he made an indelible positive impact on all those who loved him best. Praying for your family in this time, Mark and Reba Pinner.
