Her Life

"Death is not the end of life for a Christian"

December 18, 2011

Marlene Brooks, known by her friends as "Lena" was born in Chester, PA on December 27, 1941 to the late Luther and Deborah Ann Baldwin.  The Baldwin family moved from Chester to Philadelphia in 1956. Marlene was the second oldest of twelve children. She leaves to mourn Loretta Baldwin, Louise Johnson, Tony Baldwin, Yvonne Harris and David Baldwin.  Her siblings that proceeds her in death are Luther Brooks, Lavinia Hudson, Melvin Brooks, Jerome Brooks, Valerie Austin and Deborah Cook.

When she was younger she had a role of taking care of her younger siblings while trying to have a life of her own.  In her adulthood they parted ways to raise their own families. After the death of her mother, Marlene once again took that leading role.

Marlene Brooks was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system.  Later, while attending Community College of Philadelphia she worked as a medical administrator for two years.  She worked several jobs in her life until she became disabled.  Then her main concern became her family.  Even her disability couldn't stop her.  When she had the strength she would throw parties so she could be among family and friends.  If you were unable to attend she will bring the party to you.

Around 1988 she joined Bethel Presbyterian Church were she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and eventually Baptized.  Marlene and her daughter, Deidra, joined the church choir and she was known very well for her solos.

Marlene was an outgoing person, someone you could call on when you needed, someone to talk to and to put a smile on your face.  She enjoyed life which included: playing on the phones, telling jokes, being the family news reporter and dial directory. Her favorite sayings are "Yall goin to make me lose my mind", "lets get it on", "whoop there it is", and "did you order wong tan soup".  She later taught her grandchildren how to "lean back". Marlene believe in keeping the family together and being happy.  You could always count on her for support, guidance, and spiritual insights.

Marlene lived a full and fruitful life.  She touched many lives with the love and thoughtfulness as she completed her circle of life.  Marlene wants us to realize that she is not suffering, all her dreams ans wishes are coming true.

She lives to rejoice in her memory: two children Steed Brooks and Deidra Cooper, six grandchildren, Steed Brooks Jr., Khalil Brooks, Aaliyah Brooks, Arianna Brooks, Rickiyah Martin and Modesty Martin. Marlene leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends, she will never be forgotten.
