Belated Happy Birthday (64th) Martha. Hope you had a great birthday celebration with the angels and saints in heaven. Sorry, Nov. 7 was the wedding of my niece in Torrance. All my folks from the Philippines came and went on a trip with them after the wedding. However, you were not forgotten on that day. I miss you every single day. Don't forget that I pass by your former abode on the way home from work. I miss you very much. Emy and my whole family also miss you. Love you forever. Lita

Happy Birthday, Martha!
We still think of you often. We know you are in heaven and looking down on us, continuing to share in our lives with us. The girls are getting big and I know you are SO proud of them. Whenever we talk about where we've parked the van, we still say whether or not "it's by Martha's." We love you!

It has been 8 days since Martha's passing. I couldn't get myself to write this tribute because I know I could not do so without shedding tears. While we knew this was coming, we still thought your passing came too soon. However, we are comforted by our faith in God. She is now at peace, free from any pains and suffering here on earth and enjoying eternal bliss in heaven with our Creator.

We have known Martha for as long as we have known her very dear big brother Ron. That is almost 36 years. It is not possible to count the number of times we have been together at parties/ celebrations of baptism, birthdays, graduations either at our place, restaurants /hotel or at Ron's house or restaurants for various occasions, ball games, Salk or HHMI picnics. It is also impossible to count the number of times we spoke over the phone which became very frequent during the last one year and a half of her life. We also had numerous lunches or dinners, at times with Emy or my children. I am sorry for the times she had to wait for me or the times I canceled or postponed our dinner dates. Thank you for your patience and understanding

Martha was very thoughtful, caring, honest and sincere. She never missed sending greeting cards that she carefully chose for everyone in my family. She appreciated every single time that I spent with her knowing how busy I am. I can not count the beautiful thank you cards that she has sent me. She never failed to ask how everyone in my family was doing. There was always a roll call that included my daughters-in law and my grandsons even during the time she was in pain and nauseous. Every time I went to dinner with her by myself, it was automatic for her to ask why Emy was not with us. She was also generous to my children and grandsons.

Ron and Ellen, you have loved and cared for Martha unselfishly especially during the last year and a half. Once, she had said that she felt bad Ron was spending too much for her when she knew pretty well that Ron was super busy. Then she said " Lita I did not ask for this. Why did this happen to me? I am not a bad person". It broke my heart.

We will miss her. Her memory will forever live in our hearts. Good bye Martha, my friend. Rest in peace.

With our love and prayers,
Emy and Lita

We are saddened by Martha's passing. We find comfort knowing her suffering is over and she is at peace with our Father in Heaven. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Evans family. We've known Martha for a long time, and were fortunate to be on the mailing list for her world famous greeting cards. We will miss the positive energy she brought to this world.

It is difficult to express in words the deep sadness that we feel with Martha's passing. Our love and prayers are with Ron, Ellen and Lena at this time of sorrow. We have many wonderful memories of Martha's loving and caring manner during the celebrations during the many wonderful years we have been a family.

Ron, you have always shown your love for Martha in your gentle and caring ways, Martha was proud so proud to have you as a big brother.

Martha will be missed by us but always in our hearts.

Martha was a beautiful soul. She had a beautiful influence on my life and the life of my daughters and husband. As neighbors, we always checked in with each other as we passed in our cars or in the driveways. We also enjoyed having Martha over to celebrate our family's birthdays and Christmases. Jon especially liked to invite Martha to watch movies with us and our girls. We had such fun watching the Wizard of Oz, Ten Commandments, Sound of Music, etc. Martha and I loved to share popcorn! I can't imagine my daughters' lives without the loving and caring influence of Martha. As for myself, Martha and I had the most fun when I was pregnant with my second daughter. I wasn't working on my PhD program then, so we could enjoy talking and having dinner at our leisure. Even with the PhD program, Martha always cared more about me than the program itself. She listened to my complaints, but always left me feeling that she was undoubtedly one friend who genuinely cared. That feeling was mutual. My daughters are now 9 and 11. They have both known Martha all their lives and are so much better for it. We love Martha very much and she will always be a part of our family.

It is difficult to put into words Martha's kindness and loving manner. She always greeted me with arms outstretched and gave me a big hug with a huge smile. And the cards! Not a holiday or a birthday that I did not get a card from Martha. She was so thoughtful and I learned to look forward to the cards. She never failed to ask about "Lukey" which is how she referred to my first grandson, Lucas (now 17 years old). These are the moments that I remember. I always thought of her as Ron's "little sister." He was her hero and her protector, that's for sure. She loved and missed Lena who was now grown and living in New York. She looked up to Ellen who was always there for Martha, encouraging her growth and independence.

I will miss you Martha - here's a big hug (((()))). Until we meet again, love,
Elaine

This is intimidating … What words of comfort can I possibly offer to my dear friends Ellen and Ron and Lena in the wake of what you’ve gone through during these many months of Martha’s illness, especially during these past few weeks that she’s suffered so.

Words are so inadequate, but I remind myself that eloquence is not required -- only love and kindness, and I have plenty of that for the three of you.

My memories of Martha are mainly from many, many years ago, when we lived in La Jolla, and Martha took care of Katie and Kristen, along with Lena, during the hours when the three of them were not in Preschool at Sorrento Valley. Katie was 5, Kristen 3, and Lena 2 ½. When I came to collect Katie and Kristen after a long day’s work, often horribly late, Martha was always cool, calm, smiling, and gracious. If they had been hellions, as I’m sure they were at times, I never heard a word of it.

I also learned much about Martha, and even more about you, Ron, when I got to work with Ellen on a video for your 60th birthday. What fun we had, sifting through old reel-to-reel home movie footage taken by your father in the 50s, Martha tottering about, having barely learned to walk, and being doted over by big brothers Ron and Stuart.  I had always observed how loving and gentle you were, Ron, with Martha, but I got to see the root of it in those videos, along with the deep roots of your love for your father and your brother, Stuart. I think that dynamic remained in play for all of Martha’s life – Martha who remained child-like in many ways; Ron, so brilliant and accomplished. Yet, clearly none of that mattered a whit to either of one of you. Ron, truly there has never been a little sister who adored her big brother more, or a big brother who showed his little sister more kindness. And Ron, not just Martha, but all of us who know and love you, have been the beneficiary of that gentleness toward your sister, because it has deeply informed the essence of the person you are today.

Jim and I send our blessings to the three of you as you celebrate Martha’s life tomorrow and Thursday.

All our love,
Kim and Jim

Every time we had the opportunity to talk with Martha, we were greeted with a delightful smile, and a great attitude about living. Martha always seemed to emphasize her joys, never her problems. She seemed to be especially good about appreciating the moment. This is a life lesson we will take from her example. What a pleasure to know her! Cory and Dona Mapston
