                                                                OBITUARY

Martha Ellen White-Warren of Ponte Vedra, Florida, passed into eternal life on March 31, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The many whose lives she touched - family, friends, and loved ones - grieve her loss, as they celebrate the cherished memory of a life lived with passion, honesty, determination, and love.

Born on July 28, 1944, in Rockford, Illinois, Martha attended South Beloit High School, where she participated in band and choir, the Quill and Scroll Society, student government serving as class secretary, and graduated as a member of the school Honor Society in 1962.  She married Nathaniel Martin of Rockford, Illinois, in January of 1962.

While working at Chrysler Corporation over the next decade, Martha returned to school to continue her studies at Rockford College, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.  Beginning a career in the field of human resources thereafter, she moved on to work with Procter and Gamble Corporation, where she remained for over thirty years.  Through the course of the decades, her work took her through stints in New Orleans (whose music and cuisine remained life-long favorites), Des Moines, Albany, GA, Cincinnati, and Lebanon in Ohio, and then to Ponte Vedra.

She retired from her position as a human resources leader in 2016.  As a beloved member of her P&G team, Martha was well-known and universally respected as an inspirational and effective lifelong advocate for workplace equity and diversity. A generation of P&G colleagues will remember Martha as an advocate, ally, dear friend, and sage career mentor who was always ready to listen, share and counsel. After retirement, she continued to do consulting work through her company The And Multiplier.

Martha’s passions were many, but her heart was happiest when traveling and when she was with family and friends.  Her enthusiasm for seeing new places, trying new foods, experiencing different cultures, and making new friends took her around the world over the last decades of her life, sometimes in the interests of her company but more often, especially after retirement, enjoying fun and adventure in the company of her husband Joe Warren, whom she married in 1999 and whose steadfast love remained her constant source of strength to her death.

All those who knew her will never forget Martha’s vivacious personality or her dynamic energy.  “The universe cooperates with a made-up mind,” she was fond of saying, and her unflagging determination to cooperate with the universe inspired her to always know her mind!

She is preceded in death by her mother, Marcia Morgan, her grandson, Xavier Murphy, her late husbands, Nathaniel Martin and Wallace White, and her sister-in-law, Gloria Teen Warren Blalock.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Warren; two children, Marcia (David) Murphy and Chad Martin; three stepchildren, Brian (Shy), Nicole, and Brandon (Romanda  Warren; thirteen grandchildren, Madeline Murphy (Corey) Fitzpatrick, Julian (Elizabeth) Murphy, Gilbert, Isabel, Mathilda, and Eleanor Murphy, and McKenzie, Myles and Marley Martin, Bryson, Blaise, Rodney Ariel, and Sage Warren; and three great-grandchildren, Agnes, Bernadette, and Arthur Murphy; her brothers Earl (Karen) and Mark Drake, nephews Marcus and Dominique Drake, niece Renee Rademacher and several great-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Martha’s grandson’s scholarship, Xavier Thomas Murphy Spirit of the Mission Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Happy birthday to the most wonderful mother in the world. You taught me so much on how to be a loving person in a world that can be filled with hate. You taught me to have hope in a world that is despairing. You taught me to think and not to follow. Thank you for these beautiful gifts! I am a better person because of you! Happy birthday!

Not a day goes by...
Not a moment...
That your voice is not missed.
That your laugh is not missed.
That your amazing spirit is not missed.
I think of you often.
Knowing there is no pain.
No want.
No worry.
I relish the fact that you are present with the Lord.
And look forward to that time when we meet again.
I thank God for our friendship.
And wish you a peaceful eternal rest.

I can’t believe it’s been a year since Martha left us. I still miss talking with her. She was so brave and positive about her illness.
She left a positive mark on everyone she came in contact with. She will be missed for a long time.

A Poem About Martha White Warren

Martha White Warren was truly the picture of grace,
Even now I can see the serene and beautiful smile that always graced her face,
Precious memories of our friend will forever stand the test of time,
For Martha White Warren was, in so many ways, the very meaning of sublime.

People who didn’t know her may wonder what she was about,
But those of us who knew and loved her never had any doubt,                     That she was earnest, down-to-earth and daring and, and that little got under her skin,
And that she was accepting, and cool and unwavering, until the very end.

Martha always did speak softly, but you see, that was her way.
And it certainly never kept any of us from hearing whatever she had to say.
For her words were quietly bold; and her impact was boldly strong,        Our dear friend Martha’ll be missed, just as sure as the days are long.

Martha, I love you. I know you are at peace, and I pray that you will continue to make the universe better throughout eternity.

Martha was a great person and friend. While I knew and worked with Martha at P&G, I got to see her passion again for the work that I first met her doing at P&G (Diversity and Inclusion in New Orleans), when we reunited as Board members for VISIONS. Martha’s efforts and work for VISIONS will long be a legacy of who she was and what she stood for in life and beyond.

Although we grew up in the same hometown and had common connections through P&G, I did not meet Martha until she joined us on the Board of Directors at VISIONS, Inc., culminating her lifelong passion working for equity and justice. Martha's exceptional ability to uplift others with compassionate questions and genuine attentiveness to their answers was evident from the moment she arrived and she has been a consistent source of joy and inspiration these last three years.

We know how much our work meant to you, Martha. We saw your love and commitment right to the very end and it brings us joy to have brought that joy to you. Your flame never dims, dear Martha, it merely moves to illuminate another realm. You will be dearly missed, always remembered and forever loved.

Martha was a beacon of light that shone with such intensity that her impact would never be forgotten. I learned so much from Martha about relationships, especially through her work with PSP (People Supporting People). Not only did Martha coach and mentor, but lived out and modeled the principles she believed in.

I am blessed to have had Martha as a dear friend mentor, and neighbor. I will miss our conversations and the opportunity to just “drop by and check in.” Joe and Martha always made Bill and I “feel at home” and we look forward to our continued visits with Joe.

Your light now flickers within all whom you’ve impacted,

Martha was intelligent and loved learning. While in high school, she was very active in many activities and used the gift of her intellect to impact her surroundings. She went on to do this with every job and every organization that she was involved in.

Martha was not only smart, she began sharing her gifts with others at an early age. Her commitment to service that began in high school continued to be important throughout her life.

No shape, form or fashion - just help when needed most

May 21, 2021
Martha came to my aid when I was tasked with leading a presentation related to "trust". There was a formal training program ("Speed of Trust") for which of course Martha was an expert and certified trainer. I find it interesting that she was certified in in something that she already knew and lived so well  - long before someone wrote a book about it!

In the end, Martha came through for me. She didn't send someone else, she stepped in and graciously gave her time. She didn't do it because "the business" asked her to, she simply did it to help me. I am not anyone who could offer her a promotion, money, or even a recommendation. By all rights I should've been working for Martha. Yet she gave her time to lend her expertise just to help this sistah who needed a helping hand. It has been many years since that day she came to my aid, but I have never forgotten it. It is in the spirit of Martha White Warren that I look to pay her kindness forward. Rejoice in paradise Martha for a job well done during your earthly visit.

Our tribute to our Sista Martha

With Love: Charlene, Della, Karan, Lisa, Monique, Pam, Pat, Sharon, Shelia, Terri

Martha our Sista, Confidant, Teacher, Mentor, BFF, Role model, Protector, Safe place, the “Wind Beneath our Wings."

Martha strived to leave us in a better place than we were before we met her. AND we are better because of her. When she smiled and hugged you, YOU knew she saw a light in your face as she had just deposited some wisdom that would make you a better person, more authentic, and “own your stuff” -No blame and No shame! Martha, The one person who could put you on blast while still giving you a hug! We treasured every conversation and the deep insight that we received by being in Martha’s presence.

Martha taught us the power of “AND” which opened many possibilities in our lives. Martha taught us how to BE vs DO., how to share truth to power while also being ourselves. She taught us to always enjoy life to the fullest. Be free and let go. Always improve, learn, read, travel, and not to be afraid to try and explore new things. Life is a Learning Journey. She cradled our hearts like a baby in her arms, keeping it safe from corporate harm. She pushed us to soar when we didn’t know we had wings and assured us we could conquer all things. Martha gave us courage and taught us to chase our dreams.  She was a visionary thinker and we could always count on her for “out of the box” ideas.

Martha, Martha, Martha, Beautiful and powerful AND full of poise, wisdom, and empathy!   Martha, you have been everything we needed. You led us with GRACE, positivity, possibility, patience, and peace.

Why did Martha make such a big impact on our lives?

Very Simple, She loved each and every one of us AND we loved her back. She gave us unconditional love and taught us the power of forgiveness. Martha made each of us feel special, more joyful, more spiritual, and more accepting of others. She knew our secrets and trusted us with hers. Martha’s capacity to give was limitless, her strength gave us strength and her light made our light shine brighter.

And most importantly, she shared her family and friends with us. We loved listening to stories about her husband Joe, her children, and grand kids. We felt like family. We will always cherish the fun times we had with Martha; Travelling, laughing, celebrating, taking shots of Patron, and having tough conversations as we confronted our truth.

Our heart is heavy as reality sets in, AND we stand strong because Martha prepared us all along. Martha we can hear you whispering to us: Meet people where they are, Relax and take care of Yourself, and last, the universe cooperates with a made up mind.

We are so grateful that the Lord blessed our lives with Martha. We will always love you Martha!

Martha, my link sister,  is one of those special people you meet, who never misses an opportunity to render a kind deed.
When my son died from Colon cancer in 2018, she prayed with me,  and for me constantly. She  was able to understand my pain, as she had had a grandson who died at a young age.
On one of her daughter’s visit to Jacksonville,
whose son had died, she invited me to her house to meet with her and share, which was comforting
Marcia, I have never forgotten our visit, or your kind letter. Your mother was truly a gift and blessings to me. May her Soul Rest In Peace.
