His Life

Remembering the Life of Martin Rosenthal

June 27, 2015

Martin Rosenthal considered himeself, "The most optimistic pessimist you'll ever know." Born November 23, 1954 in Los Angeles, CA, Marty was raised by adoptive parents, Myra June and Louis "Larry" Rosenthal. He grew up in Culver City, CA along with his three siblings, Margaret "Marcy", Michael "Mike" and Leslie "Lee." There he attended Culver City Junior High and High School. Early on, Marty showed incredible artistic ability, and naturally went on to study art, recieving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He then worked as an industrial designer for Rockwell, International.

In the early 1980s Martin married Mattika, and on October 5, 1987, their twin daughters, Paige Alison and Lauren Ashlee were born. Marty was a very dedicated father. He did everything in his power to make sure his daughters had a stable life and an outstanding education, going to great lengths so his girls could attend the best schools in Southern California. At one point, Marty even took a substitue teachiing position at Los Alamitos Unified School District so his girls could attend the award-winning schools there. Martin was also a good son to his mom and dad before they passed on. He spent time with them regularly and made sure his mom's car was taken care of and washed weekly when she couldn't get around as easily. Marty was also after his parents to take good care of themselves, and Marty began to take fitness very seriously as well. He was a regular at the YMCA in Lakewood, CA as well as in Phoenix, AZ, where he lived his last years.

After battling his disease for nearly two years, Martin began to lose ground in the spring of 2015. It was very fitting that it was in the spring when new life begins, because on April 14, 2015 a new life began as Marty's was ending. Arlo June was born to Lauren and Marc. The new parents wasted no time in bringing Marty's new granddaughter from Portland OR to Phoenix, AZ to meet him. Even in his despair over his failing health, Grandpa Marty would see Arlo and his spirits would be lifted. He had a connection with her that went way beyond words. He would say that she was taking everything in. He said he could see her mind at work. Arlo, Paige and Lauren were the delights of his life. Perhaps the source of his underlying optimism.

Martin was also a person best characterized by his amazing artwork and wry sense of humor. He shared his artwork with family members creating beautiful portraits and illustrations for them as well as his industrial art, classical art and pop art pieces. It was what he was born to do and he knew it. Even though in his own eyes his dreams were never fully realized, everyone who admires his work knows that his success is not measured in his making his living by his art, but in the way he captured mechanical form and human spirit and the inherent beauty of both. Martin's witty sense of humor could also be desribed as wry or even cynical. Along with this dark side, ironically, there was an unmistakable undercurrent of optimism that usually presented itself as a fight. That fight served him well as he fought for his precious girls and as he fought his disease to the absolute end. Because of that internal fight born of optimism, he did not lose on single minute of his own way of life.

Marty, you will always be loved and remembered.
