Her Life

Mary Cornelia Beck Chambers was born February 20, 1925 the only child of Margaree Davis Beck and Luther Eugene Beck of Orrville, Alabama. She passed out of this life on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the Gene and Irene Wockner Hospice Center/Evergreen Medical Center, Kirkland Washington after an extended illness.

  A High school graduate of Orrville High School Class of 1943 she entered the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943 and was graduated from the Grady Hospital Nursing School with their Class of 1946. She went on to do Post Graduate Studies in Maternal and Infant Nursing. 

Mary was married in Atlanta, Georgia in November 1952 to George Dewey Chambers of Clyde, North Carolina. She worked at Georgia Baptist Hospital as a Labor and Delivery Nurse and in May of 1961 helped to open the Labor and Delivery Rooms at the new DeKalb General Hospital in Decatur, Georgia.

Mary was a member of the District IV Nurses Association of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and served as Chairman of NAACOG Georgia Section 1972-1978. She retired from DeKalb Medical Center in 1992 as Nurse Manager of Women and Infant Services.

Mary’s interests and hobbies included: Church work including teaching bible classes and singing in the church choir, playing bridge, volunteering for the historic Fox Theatre in Atlanta, chasing after her children and grandchildren, popular music ranging from the classics to Michael Buble, gardening, and her pet rat terrier “Buddy”

Mary is survived by her children Mary Lorraine Chambers of Bellevue, Washington, Dewey Eugene Chambers of Winder, Georgia, Michael Davis Chambers of Bethlehem, Georgia and David Chambers of Florida. By her grandchildren Chase Stinnett, Shaw Stinnett, Blake Stinnett, Michael Meeks, Shea Chambers, Chad Chambers, Rachel Blauman, and Laura Blauman and by her great-grandson Jake Meeks.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son Jerry Dean Chambers.
