Our beloved mother and grandmother, Anna Maria (Mary) Gabriele, passed away with her family by her side on the morning of December 2, 2019 at the age of 71 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Mary was born in Colli, Italy to Angelo Antonio and Elvira Raponi in 1948. She immigrated with her family to Toronto, Canada in 1951 and moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1989 where she lived until her death.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Jennifer (LeeRoy Miller) and Michelle (Aaron Noble); her grandchildren, Edith Noble, Christian Miller and Gabrielle Miller; her siblings, Lou Raponi (Kathy) and Josie Raponi-Monk (David); as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her father, Angelo; her mother, Elvira; and her brother Lorenzo.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salem Academy Fund in Memory of Mary Gabriele for the education of young women at https://www.salemacademy.com/give or by mail to the Office of Institutional Advancement, 601 South Church Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring to honor her life in Old Salem on the campus of Salem Academy.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Novant Forsyth Hospital, especially Dr. J. Hollingsworth; the staff at Brookridge Retirement Community Nursing Care Center; the Trellis Supportive Care (formerly Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home) staff; and the SECU Family House.

On December 2nd, the world lost the fiercest woman I have ever known, my mother. My mother was a force to be reckoned with who loved out loud and without reservation. I am most grateful for that love and for how she taught me to love. The only people she loved more than me and Michelle were her grandchildren - her greatest joy. I never saw her as happy as she was when she was entertaining them and playing with them. They brought her so much peace, and their beloved Nonna will always protect them.
Mom was an unforgettable woman with a generous spirit who never met a stranger and has undoubtedly left her imprint on the planet. Even in her passing, she donated her beautiful body to Wake Forest Medical School. She also asked for any memorial gifts to go to Salem Academy so more young girls can have the education she only dreamt about for herself, but for which she sacrificed dearly to give to her daughters.
A very special thank you to my Aunt Josie, who is quite possibly the most amazing human being currently walking the planet. And to my husband, LeeRoy, aka “The Mary Whisperer,” for loving my mother as he does his own. And most of all, to my sister, Michie, who is the greatest gift my mother ever gave me.
Mom, may you rest in peace. Thank you for watching over us - I feel you standing here beside me!
