Mrs. Mary J Hammell McClinton was born October 1st, 1920 in Lovick, Alabama. Mrs McClinton was preceded in death by both parents, Ms Minnie Ballard and Mr. Jesse Patterson; Daughter, Gertrude White; step daughter, Geraldine H Bothwell; son , Howard Hammell, Jr.; and first husband, Howard Hammell, Sr. Mrs. McClinton was the oldest of 6 children and was preceded in death by her 5 siblings, Clarence Hunter, Jr., Clara Mae Winston, Joe Louis Hunter, Louvenia Hunter and James Hunter.

She accepted Christ at an early age. She joined St. Stephenson Baptist church in Lovick, Alabama and later moved to Birmingham and United with the Bethel Baptist Church in Collegeville. She was an active member, serving in the usher board.

She completed and received certification as a licensed nurse at the Carraway Methodist Hospital and worked throughout the Birmingham area. Mrs McClinton was also very active in the civil rights movement in Birmingham, under Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. Mrs. McClinton had a huge heart, was an excellent cook and always opened her kitchen to any and everyone who wanted to be fed. 

Mrs. McClinton was a Christian woman who loved the lord. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Carolyn A. Hammell of Birmingham, AL; sons, Harrell Hammell (Beverly) of Birmingham, AL, U’Mar Akbar (Marilyn) of Atlanta,Ga, and Toby Leon Hammell of Atlanta, Ga; and a plethora of grands, and a host of other relatives.

Public Visitation: June 17, 2019 at 11 am at Bethel Baptist Church, 3200 28th Ave No, Birmingham, AL 35207. 

Funeral Service: June 17, 2019 at 12 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 3200 28th Ave No, Birmingham, AL 35207.
