Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Jones passed away peacefully at age 72 on April 2, 2020, in Amarillo, Texas after a long battle with cancer. Libby had just moved to Amarillo to be closer to her son and grandchildren while she fought her illness.

Libby was born into the world as Mary Elizabeth Massey on March 3, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama to her parents John Paul Massey and Nina Katherine Mosely Massey.

Libby lived in Birmingham her whole life and attended Ramsay High School graduating in 1966. She then continued her education at the University of Alabama where she majored in Social Work and graduated in 1970.

Shortly after college, Libby married David Wilkinson and gave birth to their two sons, Paul and David "Wayne". Libby was a homemaker and a social worker for 30 years; serving families in almost every aspect of her life.

Libby then met her husband Benjamin "Benny" Jones. Libby and Benny bought a chicken farm together in Jasper where they raised chickens for 15 years. Her favorite way to spend time was watching University of Alabama football.

After her husband passed away, Libby moved to Amarillo to spend time with her newborn granddaughter. She lived there for two years before returning to Birmingham.

Libby has spent the past few years enjoying her retirement and traveling. She would spend time in Amarillo with her grandchildren who meant the world to her. When she wasn't in Texas, she was either watching Alabama play on Saturday or traveling with her cousin Nina David, her brother James "Jim" Massey, and her sister-in-law Debbie Massey. Libby's favorite way to travel was by cruise ships.

Libby was preceded in death by both her parents, John Paul Massey and Nina Katherine Mosely Massey, her son David Wayne Wilkinson, and her husband Benjamin Jones. She is survived by her son Paul (Vicki) Wilkinson, grandchildren Emma and Hunter Wilkinson, her brother James (Debbie) Massey, her cousin Nina (Paul) David, her niece Meredith (Richard) Fitch, and several other close family and friends.

Due to the Stay-at-Home order, a YouTube livestream of Libby's service will be available beginning at 12 pm, Saturday, April 11, 2020. Go to www.lusainmemorial.com and click the LIVESTREAM icon at the top of the page. Libby will be put to rest at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.

Libby's mother and my father were siblings. Libby and I were the same age and would have been close, but my family moved to California when I was 2 years old and I saw her only 2 times after; once when we were 12 and once when we were 15. In March of last year, I felt an inexplicable urge to locate her and to visit her in Birmingham, not knowing that she was struggling with cancer. As if the 50+ years with no contact had not passed, she welcomed me with the love and generosity that I remembered from our childhood and we spent our time reminiscing and filling in the holes in our histories. Her sense of humor was sharp as ever and she was positive and hopeful about her prognosis and her life. Her eyes sparkled as she spoke lovingly and proudly of Paul and Vicki and her incredible grandchildren, and of Jimmy, the "best brother anyone ever had," as well as Nina and Meredith whom she loved and appreciated so much. I'm so grateful that we had that time together. Rest in peace, dear cousin.
