My wife, Tarey, and I had a BBQ last night with two dear friends from the Czech Republic that would have been equal to the side of cow Matt would have cooked at the lake on a weekend night in Spring.

Great wine, good Hawaiian music and a toast under the stars.  Aloha nu'i Matt, we had a spirit glass with you. 

A lot has been said about Matt having a lot of fun in his life, probably more than most of us will ever have if we were to live twice as long.  But, Matt had many other dimensions to his life.

A mutual friend of ours had a pipe burst in his house a few years ago.  The whole lower level of his house was flooded.  Everything needed to be moved out to storage or sent to the dump in a short period of time for repairs to begin.  I came by on a Saturday to help and Matt was there working.  As I can recall, he stayed as long as anyone that day and was a hard worker.  Matt had a vast network of friends and lots of ideas for fun activities all the time.  He could have easily made some excuse, but he chose to help out a friend.

Matt is truly unique!  When he was in his 20’s I came over before a party and Matt answered the door wielding a candy thermometer.  He was making pecan brittle.  I remember thinking with amazement ‘Who does this?’  And by the way making a good brittle is hard and he of course nailed it.  He went on to make dinner to feed everyone at the party.  We ate and laughed until tears rolled down our cheeks.  That is just how Matt rolled.  Laughing and Eating, drinking, eating, laughing some more.  The guy knows how to enjoy life.  

I send so much love from the bottom of my heart to Matt's family and friends.

I wasn't there myself, but I have several unimpeachable sources who tell me it did happen.

It was getting very close to a Friday 5-2-0 departure from San Francisco and Matt was nowhere to be seen. 

Right about the time everyone figured he'd taken an early boat home, Matt walked up the gangway with an armload full of Pizza Hut Meatlovers pizza pies, which he had directed to be delivered to the Gandhi Statue in the Ferry Plaza.

D'ya think the Pizza Hut Call Center might be in India?

So, it was the first time WF Bank observed the MLK holiday, and I told Matt that this new French bistro restaurant had opened near my office.  Being bankers, Matt and Andrea and I gave it a 11:30 am tyry-out. 

We nearly missed the 3:35 pm boat.

I remember that Matt always liked to sit facing the door (he was a mobster in a previous life) and that every time he and I went outside for a smoke, we'd come back to sit with Andrea with a strangely refreshed glass of Kir Royale.

As we were "walking" down Sacramento Street to the Ferry Terminal, Andrea had a wonderful idea that she "needed" something (expensive) from Sur La Table.  This plan worked well as it allowed us to miss the 3:00 pm boat and take the 3:35 pm with Monica tending bar....
