Matthew Singleton Sr., age 82, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 8, 2020. He was the youngest of five (5) children and was born on July 5, 1938 to Mary and Claude Singleton (deceased) in Woodbury, New Jersey. Throughout his academic tenure, Matthew attended the Woodbury Public School system graduating from Woodbury High school as an All-State track and field star.Matthew later attended Gloucester County College, in Sewell, New Jersey, to obtain an Associate’s Degree of Arts and Education. Afterwards, he went on to attend Rowan University (formally known as Glassboro State College).

At an early age, Matthew developed a relationship with the Lord. God blessed him with gifts and talents that he used for singing the Gospel and he taught himself to play the piano. In 1957, Matthew Singleton married Peggy Singleton (deceased). From this union, they had five children.

Matthew put his heart and soul into his work and community endeavors. In his earlier years, he worked for the City of Woodbury at the water-treatment plan. In 1986, he brokered insurance at Herron-carbine Associates of Williamstown, New Jersey. Following his love for the road, he was also a union trucker. He had an unwavering commitment to working with youth at the Youth Advocate Program Inc. which naturally transitioned to the many neighborhoods throughout South Jersey. He was a servant leader. For many years, he served as the treasurer of the Morris Brown Alumni helping raise funds for students to attend college.

Matthew loved his community, and was a man of great service. He was affectionately known to family, friends, and community members as dad, pops, camera man, and pop-pop. Matthew loved sports; he would travel all over with his brother David attending Woodbury track meets and football games. He spread the love of sports to his family becoming keenly involved in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s sporting activities such as track, basketball, baseball, football, wrestling, and karate. He was also very active in their academic accomplishments, and sat on the front row at the band and choir concerts taking photos.

With or without his family, Matthew enjoyed a number of hobbies. He had a passion for cars. You couldn’t keep him out of a car. He liked good music and food. He developed a strong desire to capture history and important life moments through his love for taking pictures. So much so, he was coined as the camera man.

Matthew Singleton Sr. is predeceased by his parents, Mary and Claude Singleton, wife Peggy Singleton, his brothers (Melvin, William Sr., and David Sr.) and his sister (Nettie Higgins).

He leaves to cherish his memory, his children Maryann Singleton (Woodbury), Matthew Singleton Jr. (Woolwich Twp.), Mark Singleton Sr. (Woodbury), Claudette Singleton (Camden), Renee Patterson (Robert Sr.) (Delaware), Micah Kidd (Washington D.C), and Nicole (Pennsauken). Also, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many extended family members who loved him dearly.

He will be forever etched in our hearts and we are sad to see him go. We know God has prepared a place for him with his family.

Viewing Friday, August 21, 2020 from 10-11 am with Celebration to begin at 11 am at FERTIG FUNERAL HOME, 63 N. Main St., Mullica Hill, NJ 08062. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
