My Memories of Dear McCall
Early in April, McCall and Tate’s birthday was on my mind. My reflections of them occurred frequently as I pondered their birthday message. It wasn’t until the morning of their birthday, April 18th, that I finally decided I would share my memories of their birth. I treasurer my last message from McCall, “Thank you Patty, so sweet!” sent on April 19, 2021, at 3:35 am, less than 12 hours after she received my congratulatory birthday email! It also was within a short few hours of her passing. That thoughtful and sincere message defines the McCall I dearly love and deeply miss!
From the time McCall was a child, she was a sweet, happy, and sincere little girl. As a toddler, she was busy and seemed to enjoy all life had to offer. She acquired both confidence and trust at an early age and would let others hold her and be near her. Considering the miles between our families, that was unusual and commendable.
McCall and Tate had a rare bond between them. I don’t recall ever seeing any discord between them from their early years into adulthood. In today’s world, that is almost unheard of and a choice example of the love and devotion they shared that was nurtured and demonstrated by their parents.
I enjoyed reflecting on pictures of McCall and Tate on the ranch. McCall was there to watch, learn, and see how things worked. I loved seeing her curiosity evident in one picture while she looked at the tractor. Life for McCall was an adventure she embraced and lived to the fullest.
McCall’s healthy level of confidence was evident in the many sports activities she participated in. Her love of riding horses and her knowledge of how to care for them amazed me! Her participation in swimming and her level of effort, talent, and faithful attendance at lessons and the competitive events she participated in, reflected her strong work ethic and impressive athletic talent. She also was a gifted basketball player. That trait was manifest one afternoon during a family basketball game in our driveway while Mom, Dale, and I watched.
McCall’s intellectual, physical, and social skills provided a solid foundation to strengthen her confidence. Interestingly, I never saw or knew of a time when she ever put herself first in any situation. Her kindness and compassion were beyond her years. She used her confidence to expand her personal talents and enrich other’s lives.
I have thought multiple times of the courage McCall displayed in so many settings. She chose to go away to college at San Diego State. She also worked while going to college; never looking for the easy way out. After earning her undergraduate degree, she courageously ventured out to South America to expand her Spanish and broaden her experiences.
It took immense courage for McCall to have her parents and extended family at her home as she awaited the results of her bar exam. She could have simplified her life without the pressure of company while the unknown test outcome loomed heavily on her mind. Instead, she bravely let us have the memorable and thrilling experience of personally sharing in her monumental achievement of passing the California Bar on her first try!
When I visited, considerate, sweet McCall always took time to visit me. I cherish our trip to the wonderful mansion that’s name has left me. She devoted her full day to being with us, chauffeuring us, dining with us, and sharing her happiness. She sacrificed her personal needs to enrich our lives!
Now when I look at the shells I bought at Fisherman’s Wharf, I reflect on that day spent with her. It provides a physical reminder of McCall’s thoughtfulness and her sacrifice of time to join us. Those shells are filled with sweet and fond memories!
Her law school graduation picture is another reminder of her absence. I reflect on her bright and quick mind. Her years of combining work, law school, and homework. She took the hard road and came out triumphant.
McCall’s legal skills enriched the lives of others. On a visit to California after she began her law practice, McCall told me of a client she was representing whom she felt had not been justly treated through prior legal representation, and of her personal concern for the injuries he suffered in an accident. She reflected a personal commitment to do all in her power to correct that wrong. We never had the opportunity to revisit that issue. Fortunately, Kent guided me to the touching outcome and justice McCall provided to enhance that gentleman’s life.

McCall was genuine to the core. Her love of her brother, parents, extended family, pets, and friends were evident in her genuine acts of kindness and support. McCall encompassed traits that few acquire over a lifetime. McCall packed her tragically short life with kindness, courage, compassion, and example. McCall is near and dear to my heart! I love my dear McCall.
