Its really hard to believe that Mehmood is no more. He has left such a huge gap at ICRAF and in the hearts of most of us. I worked with him very closely at the Partnerships Directorate and he was always very humble and insightful; the go-to person when one is stuck.

Rest well Mehmood. May your family be comforted.

I was so sad to hear about the passing of Mehmood. I am grateful that I was able to work with him and the team to help set up the African Plant Breeding Academy in Kenya. It was a complicated process to do so remotely but Mehmood was so patient with me and our processes and regulations. He was also very thorough which made me assured and grateful that we had a strong partnership. I am forever grateful to have been able to work with him.

Mehmood was a person who always looked for ways to make others' lives better. With a smile, a word of encouragement, a thoughtful gesture, a brilliant suggestion, and inspired mentorship, he lifted others up. His role in leading ICRAF's Capacity Development Unit fit his persona so well as he constantly sought to help people rise to a higher level, both professionally and personally, and become their "best" selves. The African Plant Breeding Academy is profoundly grateful for Mehmood's professional excellence, many contributions, and great kindness.

Mehmood's legacy is reflected in all of us. We are all better for having known him. Mehmood will be missed tremendously. May his soul rest in peace. And may his beloved family be comforted.

Although he was my first boss / team lead, but he never ever showed traditional way of handling. He always was accomodating and facilitator. However he was taking assignments in a professional way. obviously his had great sense of humour. Really he was my mentor and even today I have been following his given directions in my professional life. He always promoted truth, honesty and hardworking. Mahmood SB, you are my ideal really. God bless you with Jannat with high rank and give patience to your closed ones / family in members. A lot of love and respect for you SIR.

We will sincerely miss Mehmood. His gentle smile and his collaborative spirit. Mehmood was excellent at bringing people, ideas and themes together! Most recently with the CTCN, inviting country representatives to engage with the ICRAF Scientists here in Nairobi- to encourage co-learning and knowledge sharing. You could always count on having a deep intellectual conversation with Mehmood - whether on the nature of interdisciplinary research or on implementing restoration. I will miss these engagements. My thoughts go to his family. Sincerely, Leigh

Many thanks for arranging this tribute space for all those who knew and liked Mehmood. The feeling of him being no longer physically among us is so strange, unexpected and untimely that the whole thing seems still unreal.

In his old good IWMI days almost 20 years back when Central Asia was a subunit of IWMI-Pakistan, Mehmood was among those who set up and later brilliantly headed the sub-office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In fact, he is still much remembered and respected here by many who had the pleasure of working and communicating with him – both in big cities and in rural areas, especially those sharing the Ferghana Valley where he worked and traveled a lot from Tashkent. We used to joke when he later relocated to Ghana in W. Africa in the mid-2000’s that it was a perfectly logic move… after FerGhana :) To me he had been always a great colleague, boss, researcher and research mentor at the same time – so easy and interesting to be, work and talk with!

Thanks a lot, Mehmood, for being such a fantastic and suave person. Much appreciated indeed! As you move further these days, changing the worldly dimension my thoughts are with you and your close ones.
خدا آپ کی جگہ ٹھنڈی اور آرام دہ رکھے اور گھر والوں کو سہارہ و تسلی فرماے۔

I am very saddened to hear about the loss of Mehmood. He gave me an opportunity to work at IWMI in 2004, and he was my supervisor for three years. He was a genuinely kind and helpful person who was a good role model to everyone. It was an honor to have known him and worked with him. I send my condolences to his wife and daughters. May God rest his soul in peace.

Big big loss, so sorry to hear this sad news! I have known Mehmood since 2003. He was a great leader to his team when he worked in IWMI Central Asia. My deepest condolences to family, friends and colleagues

This is still very difficult to process and accept that Mehmood is no more. He was a role model, leading quietly, a peace maker and the go to person for advice and guidance. He was there for me during the many transitions I have had in the last few years.
His memory and works will always remain with us,
May his family be comforted and find strengthened to go on
May his soul rest in peace

Mehmood was one of those people who strived to make everyone's life better everyday by simply saying hello and genuinely interested in knowing people. He was very fond of his family and we spoke about that often. He had an impeccable wardrobe. We seem to have the same styles--checkered blue and white shirts. He touched so many of us personally and professionally on a local and global scale. He managed the African Plant Breeding Academy for us, UC Davis Seed Biotechnology Center, in Nairobi since 2012. I am fortunate to have known Mehmood for 8 years through work in the African Orphan Crops Consortium. I will always remember my friend with a smile for the day.

My deepest condolences to the family, and friends of Mehmood Hassan.

A brilliant mind, a visionary leader, a mentor and a great boss to myself and my colleagues in CDU.
Dr. Mehmood was the embodiment of great leadership, firm yet understanding, sharing his vision for the unit with each of us but giving us the space to achieve this vision how we best saw fit within our capacity.

He was a mentor to many, challenging us to reach the zenith of our potential.
Above all, he was kind and respectful, encouraging us to air our views, listening to our ideas and guiding us.

I will forever miss his sense of humor, popping in the office every now and then to make a quick joke or just to ask how we are fairing on and offering assistance in any way he could.

His presence will be greatly missed, his words of wisdom and guidance will forever be etched in my mind. May you rest in peace Dr.Mehmood.

Dr. Mehmood Hassan there are no words to express my sorrow. It is very difficult for me to understand, having worked with you for the last 8 years, I find it very hard to accept that you are no more!
Dr. Mehmood Hassan you were such a wonderful person to work with, he created a very conducive environment to work without stress, you insisted on work life balance and family, he was so caring and understanding. I will for sure miss his ready smile and helpful attitude around the unit and other departments. He was always giving a helping hand to his staff and appreciated work well done and did not keep quite about it, he made sure we knew we were appreciated, and we are truly going to miss Mehmood.
I remember all his efforts, in making sure we keep time and submit timely reports, he was a trainer and shared many tutorials, a challenger and I recall the many times he taught us to “Manage our boss and not to let ourselves be managed by the boss”. He stayed late to help when necessary in order to support where there is a challenge and instead of getting mad at me, he sat down with me to make sure I understood everything and present a perfect work.
I pray that the many happy memories of Mehmood’s life with all of his family, with time, overcome the sadness and pain that have accompanied you all as you journeyed these later years. Mehmood did a lot for the unit and CIFOR-ICRAF as a whole, but I particularly remember his dedication to the Plant Breeding Academy. He worked tirelessly and was a good friend to all.
With my deepest and heartfelt condolences.

The biggest of hugs and so much love to Mehmood’s family, friends, and colleagues. <3

I met Mehmood in the summer of 2015 doing a fellowship with the Capacity Development Unit of ICRAF through my graduate program, and he had been a friend and mentor ever since. Mehmood opened up so many new ideas and doors to me, including the job that I hold currently and which would only be a dream without his support. He helped me grow in so many ways. Thinking back upon Mehmood, I am remembering not just his leadership and immense patience building the Unit and myself into what we are today, but also the many stories and laughs we shared over lunches, walking near the Karura Forest, and over mandazi and tea.

May the doors to heaven open so easily as you opened doors for those around you, Mehmood. You will be missed dearly.

Much love,
Amanda

Mehmood was a true people builder

I started working with Dr. Mehmood as an intern in April 2015. In 2016 I started working as employee in Capacity Development Unit, the department he headed. He allowed us room to explore and be innovative. And when he thought you could do better he was never shy letting you know.

In 2018 he notice that I had started stagnating in my career. He created an opportunity for me to work with another department so that I  can learn and gain experience in a new area. In less than an year later, I was offered a betterposition due to the experience gained from the connection he created.

We will miss him greatly and his spirit of mentorship and capacity building lives on in me and in many other young students and scientists who passed through his hands.
