Melvin Moody “Jim” Howard, 87, of 604 Lake Road, Creedmoor, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2010 at Hock Family Pavilion. 
 
A native of Boiling Springs, SC, the son of the late Melvin M. and Annie Stone Howard. He worked in a local dairy business for several years before joining the U.S. Army. During World War II, he was stationed in Japan serving faithfully as a transporter for firefighters, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many terms. He worked diligently as church custodian for more than 10 years. He retired from Liggett Myers with 42 years of service.
 
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Dr. Marc Tilley and Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial will be in Creedmoor Cemetery.
 
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Howard of the home, a son, Jerry Howard (Phyllis) of Creedmoor, two grandsons, Jeremy Howard and Jason Howard, a granddaughter, Jennifer H. Edwards (Wayne), four great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by a sister, Letha H. Dawkins and three brothers, Coley, Henry and Buck.      
 
Visitation will be held 1:00 – 2:00 PM Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at the home.
