Deacon Melvin Sherman(SGM Retired USA) of Ft. Mitchell, AL passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Midtown Medical Center. He was 77 years old and resided at 122 Mclendon Road.

A native of Dawson, GA and the son of the late George and Oberziner Mitchell Sherman, Melvin was born April 25, 1937.

A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Sherman retired from the US Army after over 28 years of service. Later, he retired from Civil Services at Ft. Benning, GA. A member of the Deacon Ministry at Franchise Missionary Baptist Church in Phenix City, he also was a part of the Feed The Hungry program at Church. He received his Bachelors Degree from Troy State University and was the owner/operator of M&J Produce in Ft. Mitchell.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Andre Sherman and three siblings, Randolph Sherman, George Sherman, Jr and Juanita Perkins.
Survivors include a loving wife of 55 years, Mrs. Jayrutha J. Sherman; two daughters, Cinithar D. Booker and Jessica Sherman; one son, Cleo Johnson(Nina); 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; two brothers, Willie D. Sherman(Cindy) and Michael R. Cheeks(Eugenia); five sisters, Daisy B. Starling(Willie James Jr), Eva L. Browner, Brenda Mosley(Kaywood), Angela Jones(Bruce) and Johnnie K. Tomlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
