Michael Alan Stein, age 61, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2021. He is survived by his mother, Rose Marie Stein, sister Sylvia (Algie Hill), niece and nephew, Faithe and Kyle Hill.He is also survived by his aunt, Vivian Adams and cousins Rene and Kevin Adams and Sharon Wonsley (Robert). He is preceded in death by his father, Leon Douglas Stein, and cousin, Rev. Dr. Jerome Adams.

Michael was a talented artist from a young age and had a lifelong love of fashion. He designed women’s apparel under his own name and was an accomplished costume designer for theater, film, television and more. His work appeared on many prominent stages, including: eta Creative Arts Foundation, The Guthrie Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He was also commissioned to design projects ranging from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. to restaurant uniform design.

Michael received many awards and honors, including a Fellowship from The National Endowment for The Arts and a Joseph Jefferson Citation for outstanding achievement in costume design. Additionally, his original sketch and design for world-renowned artist and photographer Renee Cox’s RAJÉ (RAGE!) superhero character are placed in the permanent collection of Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.

Michael Alan Stein was known to many as a talented designer and singular personality. To those near and dear to him, he will be remembered as a devoted son, loving brother, doting uncle, and cherished friend. He will be missed dearly.
