ForeverMissed

The family of Michael Peter Giardino celebrates the life of a dedicated man who loved Jesus with all his heart and led his family with a gentle spirit. Mike was a determined builder, a true craftsman in every sense. He invested his heart and energy into everything he built from his family, relationships, manufacturing systems, databases, and eventually a business making custom furniture. Mike adored his eleven grandchildren and more than anything wanted to see them grow up to honor Jesus.

Mike is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julie, who was his high school sweetheart, his four sons and daughters-in-law: Nicholas (Christy), Joseph (Jackie), Andrew (Ashley), and Anthony (Renee) are his pride and joy.  Mike was preceded in death by his parents: Peter Giardino and Mavis Giardino, his brother David Giardino, and three grandchildren, Samuel, Claire, and Angel Baby who each left us for Heaven before their Earthly birth.

Mike and Julie both love Jesus and it was apparent in how they raised their family and in their service to others. Their love of Christ and ministry to His people shone brightly. Despite a lack of formal ministry training, together they have spent over 50 years in lay ministry. Mike and Julie taught their sons to love Jesus and to demonstrate love through service just as they were doing. Mike’s faithfulness inspired his sons’ dedication to family and community.

Mike Giardino knew how to have fun! He loved to laugh with those around him, play practical jokes, and find the humor in the everyday moments. Mike and “the boys” spent time on golf courses and have many memories to share of their exploits, inside jokes, and traditions.

Mike was a determined man. He spent 43 of his 65 years fighting disease which sought to limit him. Never one to shrink from a challenge, he invented creative “Mike” ways of doing things. Mike overcame obstacles every day to fight for his family and lead from a place of humility, passion, and truth. He reached those who had been cast off, most often the homeless, widowed, orphaned, and single mothers. He was the first to arrive and the last to leave when there was a need. He worked diligently his entire life despite an affliction with psoriatic arthritis which stole his dexterity but did not dampen his resolve to adapt so that he could fulfill his calling. Decades of treatment for arthritis allowed him to be more present and provide for his family, but it ultimately caused the liver disease which finally took him from this life and into the arms of Jesus.

Mike was a self-taught engineer and database programmer and he worked at both to be able to do what he really loved in life.  His passion for furniture design and construction kept him occupied in his shop for hours each day where he took reclaimed wood and materials and crafted beautiful things.  Eventually, his craft became a business: “Original Relics” which was aimed at spreading the Gospel through flawless quality, precision, and personalized service. Mike was a naturally gifted craftsman and he designed and brought his clients’ dreams of legacy pieces to life. He loved working on his next project for the sole purpose of delighting its new owner. He tempered his engineering perspective of precision with a keen eye for uniqueness. He could spend hours with neighbors and friends describing his next design and sharing stories. Every client design meeting inevitably led him back to testifying for his love of Christ and his family.

Mike partnered with his wife on shared passion projects at her beloved schools to help kids learn and know Jesus. Since Julie’s entry into Christian education, Mike has volunteered and led many teams to improve school environments so children could hear about Jesus. Landmark Christian School, Harvest Christian Academy, Providence School, Lexington Christian Academy, and Kingsway Christian School have all benefited richly from his leadership, creative mind, precise craftsmanship, and strong determination for discipleship of young children.

As a volunteer he taught his love of woodcraft to students for three years. He passed on his love of engineering and creative craftsmanship to his sons and grandsons who could be found at his side “apprenticing” while working on a project.  He wanted them to know that giving their best, forgetting about shortcuts, and taking their time was a testimony of love. These values were engrained into his sons, grandchildren, and students.

Mike will be desperately missed by his family and by the Christian communities he served: Harvest Bible Chapel, Life Action Ministries, and Walk in the Word Ministries.

The Giardino family requests, in lieu of flowers, that well-wishers consider gifts to the Charger Capital Campaign in his honor. Indianapolis Christian School System has set up a legacy fund in his name to support the building of the new school, most specifically the STEM lab where he dreamt for students to learn engineering and woodworking as they learned to serve with their hands. At his passing, he was working on initial designs for the STEM labs as a gift to the school. A link for honoring Mike in one of his favorite ways is here: Mike Giardino Memorial Fund
The Giardino family invites you to share stories about Mike. Any meaningful or special moments involving Mike can be captured below.

A memorial service for Mike Giardino will be held to honor his legacy. There will be no formal funeral home visitation, or burial, as the family is honoring Mike’s desire to have a celebration of life instead. This celebration will be held at Radiant Bible Church, 420 Gable Crossing Drive, Avon, IN46123 on September 15, at 4 pm.The memorial service will be led by Pastors Drew Schmitz and Mike Johnson.

The Giardino family requests that all attendees celebrate Mike’s love of the outdoors and passion for golf by arriving in bright golf attire ready to celebrate his freedom from disease, his legacy, and to worship with his family over a life well lived.

Today marks the one year anniversary of Mike’s passing. People say time flies, or the first year is the hardest. I suppose that could be true for someone. Not me. The first minute was the hardest. It was followed minute by minute with another hardest minute.

And now we are at a year. I hope that he will not be forgotten, as he changed worlds for people with a kind heart and willing hands. He wasn’t too busy for people. He was a godly, but quiet leader who did not command center stage or push through the crowd to be noticed.

He will be forever missed, minute by minute. I hope those who have their sweetheart still present remember the minutes they have now can’t be traded for later.

My dear first and last love. We miss you terribly.

Mike and I along with several others were hired to staff Walk in the Word when the ministry relocated to Elgin, IL after spending several years in Grand Rapids as a subset of a larger ministry. We worked long and hard to make sure the ministry overcame the many obstacles that it faced. All of us sought out Mike when we were faced with challenging situations. How he managed to excel in so many areas always amazed me. His demeanor was continually upbeat and contagious. Obviously, he was Spirit filled. Others have mentioned golfing with Mike, and there were a number of times that Mike, Steve, David and I would play together. Can't remember much about the times, but I do know we had fun. Mike frequently spoke about his sons. They were definitely a source of joy to him and Julie. When Julie told me of Mike's passing it grieved me. I can't imagine how saddened his family was to see Mike depart from them. He undoubtedly left them with a treasure trove of memories and imparted wisdom regarding how to live a full and rich life. Mike, thanks for leading an exemplary life. I miss you and look forward to seeing you again one day in heaven.

My only regret was that I didn’t get to know Mike more. He was a man of measured and meaningful words and very well thought out intentional acts of love. His legacy will continue through his loving family and the many lives he touched.

Mike will be deeply missed and we grieve and pray for the Giardino family. I am so thankful for the time I got to spend with Mike doing various woodworking and volunteer projects for KCS. His wisdom, love for people, and humble service were such a blessing to me. So sorry for the loss here on earth. I can only imagine the welcome in Heaven when he arrived home. See you again on the other side of glory brother. Your legacy will live on through the work of your hands and rich relationships you established.

We are so sorry for your loss and we pray for the entire family as you are missing a wonderful husband, father, and grandpa. I have many fond memories of Mike and remember him as a loving, caring, compassionate brother in Christ. Whether on the golf course, building a classroom or office, working on a project or just having a casual conversation, I remember Mike as someone who cared deeply and listened intently. I will miss him though I have a regular reminder of his craftmanship as I look through my home office windows that he restored. Heaven is richer because of his presence and we are richer for knowing Mike Giardino.

The Gift of Legacy

August 29, 2022
I am so grateful to Mike Giardino for more than I can express. There is no way to quantify the impact he has had on my life and the lives of those who knew him.

From a very early age, he taught Nick how to take care of things and make repairs. He helped foster an engineering spirit in a young boy who liked to take things apart and understand how they worked. They could be found working on cars, the yard, fixing the house, setting up chairs in the early morning for a church service, or generally serving others. Through all of this, he instilled an early discipline and love for others in Nick that has served him well his entire life.

Pops was always ready with a story or a laugh and I'm convinced he never met a stranger. He was never afraid to share his faith or what God was doing in his life. I always enjoyed my conversations with him about what was going on in the world. Although, I'm not sure how much he enjoyed when I played Devil's Advocate, he enjoyed the sport of the debate.

Generosity of spirit, time, and energy was boundless with Pops. If someone needed help, he was there. He worked hard at everything he did and was not greedy for the spotlight. He did what was right and what was necessary in order to glorify God, never himself. He invested his time, love, and energy in more people than we will likely ever know. If ever he saw an opportunity to build someone up, he took it. He spoke with gentle honesty and truth.

It was a pretty big deal when I officially became a Giardino. They have strong ideas of what it means to be family, love each other, and display the love and goodness of God. For 44 years, Mike and Julie showed us what it looks like to fight for and support each other, press through the hard times, celebrate the joys, and seek to have a marriage and family that honors God. It's an honor to carry this last name and I hope to always reflect the values of love, generosity, and service that Mike and Julie wanted for their family.

When Hailee Grace was born, a whole new world opened as we watched Mike and Julie as grandparents to our little girl. Pops spent countless hours walking her around to settle her colic, or as she got older, watching her show off for him as she danced around the room. She loved to call him on FaceTime and laugh with him. I'm sad that he won't be here to teach her how to build or have her teach him how to have a princess tea party. She adores him and will miss him very much. I am forever grateful for the time they had together.

Everyday, Hailee Grace and I are the beneficiaries of the legacy Mike and Julie sought to leave to the world. Nick is a godly husband and father who never stops working hard to make sure we are safe and well-loved. So much of who he is comes from watching and learning from his Dad. I could never say thank you enough.

Pops...we already miss you so much. Thank you for all you've given us by pouring yourself out to those around you. Thank you for showing your faith and love for God so explicitly that we have no doubt that we will see you again. Love you, Pops!

Pops and Mike is so happy!

August 29, 2022
Nick was able to be with his mom and brothers in Indiana to say goodbye to his Dad. But, that meant we were waiting to tell Hailee Grace until he was able to be there with us. We've been praying about how to tell her (she's only 2). She knew that Pops was sick and that the rest of us were sad. When we were talking to God together, she would say, "Mommy...Gigi is sad. Pops and Mike is sad. Daddy is sad. You're sad." Each night we prayed for "Pops and Mike" to get better.

On Saturday, before we told her anything, she said to me, "Mommy, Pops and Mike is sooooo happy! He's not sick anymore!"

I don't know exactly how her little heart knew that, but it was absolutely true. I'm so grateful to be assured of Pops' salvation and that he was rooted and grounded in his faith. We can grieve with hope that we will see him again and that "He's not sick anymore!".

We already miss you so much, Pops, but we are so happy that you're fully healed and in the presence of the Lord. We love you and can't wait until we see you again.
