Emblematic FIFA Referee and Educationist

Michael Ekoka Wacka was born on June 19th  1932 in Victoria, today, Limbe to Papa Charles Mokondo and Mama Ekeni Mwambo of Bonangombe – Bimbia, the second Child in a family of 2 boys and 2 girls. After his Primary education at RCM Bota, the young Michael Ekoka Wacka moved onto Government Technical College, GTC, Ombe as a member of the pioneer batch in 1952. After graduating from GTC Ombe, with specialties in Carpentry and Joinery, Mr Michael Wacka  immediately secure a teaching job in his Alma matter for a while.

He  subsequently moved to the USA on a foreign scholarship, precisely to Springfield College, Virginia. After completing his studies, he returned to Cameroon, and worked at GTC Ombe and later GTC Kumba up till 1981.  He was redeployed from Kumba, to GTC Ombe, where he taught and held several positions until 1987.

Subsequently, he was transferred to the then Southwest Provincial Delegation of National Education as the Chief of Service in charge of Construction.

Mr Michael Ekoka Wacka is remembered to have contributed in the design and construction  of most Government Secondary Schools across the Southwest Region. He held the position of Chief of Service for Construction until he retired in the 1996.

Within his career as an Educationist, Mr Wacka also worked with other institutions like the Cameroon GCE Board, being a pioneer member in the setting up and vetting of the Technical GCE. He also taught in Cameroon OIC for many years and served in the Board of Cameroon OIC, during the tenure of late Mr Samuel Becke and Barrister Sam Ekontang Elad as Board Chairmen respectively.

Due to his immerse skill and knowledge, Papa spent many years after his retirement from the Civil Service, to teach at the National Advanced School of Public Works, Buea- Annex, fondly called Survey School, until his death, dispensing knowledge to millions of Cameroonian children especially in the area of Technical Drawings.

Sporting Career

In his huge sporting career, the young Michael Ekoka Wacka began as a football player with GTC Ombe college team, moving on as a Referee with the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for many years, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a FIFA accredited Referee.

He was also a one-time President of the South West Bureau of FECAFOOT.

He handled a series of Cameroon Cup Finals and was part of two African Cup of Nations; 1970 in Sudan and 1972 in Yaounde. He was one of the pioneers of Cameroonian football referees to go international and was part of the Cameroon official delegation to the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Mr Michael Wacka was married and father of 12 Children (5 girls & 7 boys), 18 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren.

He was also Knight of the Cameroon Order of Valour, Officer of the Cameroon Order of Merit and holder of a Labour Medal of Cameroon.

Papa Michael Wacka died on Friday, June 30 2017 at 9:30PM, a few days after his 85th birthday at the Buea Regional Hospital.
