This is how the surfer rides away

December 3, 2014

Very recently Mickey was experiencing severe pain in his leg and was diagnosed with a large blood clot. His health steadily declined with several emergency room visits in the weeks that followed, always being sent back home. On November 16th, he was taken to DeTar hospital and placed under heavy sedation.  The diagnosis was cancer – it had effected his pancreas, stomach, and liver.  He was due to be sent home with Hospice on December 3rd.

The surfer rode away peacefully on December 2, 2014. Doll was by his side.

His Heart

December 3, 2014

He and the Lord talked every day, and Mickey shared that joy with everyone who came into contact with him.  With a heart as big as Texas, Mickey was a generous soul; always willing to lend a helping hand. He always has an extra chair open at the dinner table, lent out his truck when a friend was in need, pitched in when a neighbor was laying sod, etc. His love for life was contagious, and he encouraged everyone to live it to the fullest, every day. He lived more in one day than most people live in a lifetime.

Guadalupe Surfers

December 3, 2014

He loved nothing better than a good (or bad) fishing trip, making good music, and good food and drink. His passion for life and music was manifested though his band, the “Guadalupe Surfers”, where his songwriting and singing talents blessed everyone who was lucky enough to catch a performance.

Mickey owned and operated M.A. Apostolo’s LLC – general contractor services in the South Texas area for many years, making many friends and leaving his mark with the beautiful renovations that now reside in so many homes and establishments.

Dolly

December 3, 2014

On August 26, 2005, Mickey married the love of his life, Dolly Marical, in Yorktown, TX.  Together, Mickey and “Doll” were an iconic couple, causing constant streams of laughter and joy everywhere they went.

The Arrival

December 3, 2014

Marcus “Mickey” Apostolo arrived on the scene on October 27, 1961.  Though born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he got to Texas “as fast as he could” convincing his mom to relocate at the age of 4 ½.  Once he arrived in Port O’Connor, he experienced a severe reaction to salt water. This brought about a lifelong addiction (or “intense love and appreciation”, as defined by his mother) to fishing and being in/on/by the water. This resulted in numerous adventures, excursions, and several near-death experiences with many of his victims friends.  His love of music and singing surfaced, and by 6th grade he had taught himself how to play guitar and was writing and performing his own music.
