Dear Mikel,
I just met you last year and I immediately understand to have met a Man who lived to realize his own Dream: the week passed too fast and remained in me the willing to know you better, to know moree deeply a great man who has a lot to teach me.
I am sure you are in a better world now, and I imagine you laughing about my daily difficulties to apply your teachings!
Thanks a lot for you teachings and for sharing your soul and experience with me.
I send a big hug to Sandy, and to all who loved you in this life!
Thanks for all Mikel, I will always remember you!

Dr. Mikel Harry brought a passion and wonder to how to use statistics to solve the big problems. He made it exciting. His crusade to develop Six Sigma black belts as the change agents to more broadly use the Six Sigma methodology has had a lasting impact on US industry.

Dr. “Doc” Mikel Harry was a great mentor! My condolences to Sandy and the family. I so enjoyed his zest for life and the sincere love he had for all his students. The Executive Master Black Belt course was as much about life as it was math. He taught me that life has order and answers are within our grasp. We will miss him and those difficult “stump” questions he would challenge us with. His legacy will live on in those he taught. Philippians 1:3. Now he’ll be bringing those same stump questions to the angels…

"On the first day of work my boss told me, read this book, learn by heart, this will be your first activity for your first week of work". It was book.So I started my career, laying my feet on your footprints. After I did not stop and as I said at that dinner in Las Vegas where I asked the microphone: "This man has created me." I have always followed you, for 24 years, I met you late unfortunately. For at least 15 years I dreamed of meeting you at some conference and when I signed up from Italy I did it because in my heart I was hoping to meet you. So it was, and one day in Orlando you went to the sponsor's salon and I reached you following you. I started with you and will always be faithful to you, all my life and career. Mikel I’m there at your sidea, right next to you. My hug is strong and endless.

Having met Mikel and Bill Smith while working at Motorola Paging in the late 1980s I was intrigued that both had passion to make a positive difference both inside and outside of Motorola. Together they gave birth to Six Sigma.

Mikel seemed to be larger than life. He was well connected with leaders in industry yet he took time for so many of us in various settings. Meals with him were full of stories that were entertaining and enlightening. Each get together provided an opportunity to learn more about Six Sigma and life in general.

He will certainly be missed. God speed to Mikel Harry!

R.I.P. Mike!

This is indeed sad. We lost one of the greatest minds I had the pleasure of knowing. 2 weeks of personal training with him was so enlightening and informative, I still quote him to this day. The business world will always remember him and his work will forever shape the way business is conducted. May he rest in peace and his family get through this hard time. - Kevin Kane

I was saddened today to learn of Mikel's passing.
We met in 1998 when DuPont started its Six Sigma journey and he
was my mentor. We co-authored the Six SIgma Fieldbook
and built a friendship during the process

The irony is that today I was presenting the challenges
of leading a SIx Sigma transformation to several Air Force
Generals.. the legacy lives on !
Thank you Mikel for teaching us all and energizing us to
continue your life's work

RIP
Don

We were standing at one of those standup tables networking after a long day at a Six Sigma conference. An energetic Six Sigma attendee was sharing her excitement after her first ever conference. Mikel and Sandy walked up just about then and she asked Mikel if he had experience in Six Sigma having no idea who he was. Mikel and I chuckled a bit and he genuinely humbly said, "Well, I guess I know a little about it. Tell me what you know."
Sandy, so sorry for your loss and ours of a great transformer and all the time he shared freely telling his great adventure.

So many have written about his amazing accomplishments. And I ditto all. I want to share something more personal. I have known Mikel as a Marine buddy, colleague, and business partner for 18 years. We traveled to many places together to teach, to start new client services, and to simply have fun like two kids. We rode motorcycle together, we cooked at his house, he taught me to ride his horses. I am so lucky to see this personal part of him. Mikel, you earned your right to report to the best duty station of all.... Heaven.  Semper Fi. Phong

Very sad to hear of Mikel's passing. We only met twice, the last time more than five years ago, but his enthusiasm, expertise, and bigger-than-life personality have always stayed with me. Another great leader of the quality world gone too soon. You will be missed.

Mikel and I really got close over the past 3 years, I however was by his side for a lifetime through Motorola years..then I only knew him as the 6 Sigma authority and a Principal Staff Engineer at GSG that would soon change the world, and mine! He was my Hero! Everything he stood for, music, America, Intelligence Community, Military, Process Improvement, love of Jesus and Family, etc... we were in stride. Every trip I made to Phoenix we would catch up at a cozy Italian restaurant in Chandler and tell stories about his life and family....I will miss him so much, what an absolute mentor and inspiration he was to me. Semper Fidelis Mikel, I will always admire and love you! I can't wait to see your Odyssey!

Mikel had a special magic about him that was contagious.

In 2012 he called me on the phone and asked that I do a presentation for him at an ASQ meeting for Wounded Warriors. From that point on we worked very closely together. He was imminent teacher that set goals and targets to be achieved – then conquered. In 2013 I received a text message from Mikel, his excitement was abound – he couldn’t wait to speak with me about the issue. At night when I got home from my client site, he asked me “Are you sitting down?” So I sat down and the call went on – in a nutshell “I want you to start a company called Rent-A-Blackbelt ® I have been thinking about this for thirty years and the time is now. After that take notes, this is what you need to do next.”
His list was mighty, I got up to the part of writing a book and am now just publishing it.

There is still plenty of work to do on that list he gave me, and I will miss very much not being able to call him and say, “We can mark that item off Mikel”.

Rest in Peace Dr. Mikel Harry, see you on the other side.

While we didn't always see eye to eye, you always had my best interest at heart. I may not have seen it at the time, but I see everything you did was always out of love. I will miss so many things about you. I will miss you biting on your mustache when you were thinking. I will miss our chats on the patio. I will miss our Walmart adventures where you obliviously Drive your cart around and almost run people over. I will miss you coming over for dinner. I will miss when you enthusiastically say, "There's my little girlfriends!" Every time you see the girls. I will Miss your sweet voicemails where you tell me how proud you are of me and my family. I will mis your sincere hugs and cheek kisses. And I will miss how you wave goodbye, tell me you love me, and tell me to drive safe.

Now it's my turn, Daddy. It's my turn to tell you how proud I am of you. I am baffled at how hard you worked to make a small town boy from Middleton, IN become the world's leader in quality control when nobody else believed you could do it. I admire all your accomplishments. I am so thankful to you for the opportunities that you have given to my family. But above all, I am humbled by how much love you showed our family over the past year. While it's my turn to say goodbye, I know it won't be for forever and I will be happy when I get to feel fuzzy mustache cheek kisses and long talks on Heaven's patio.

Daddy, I will continue to make you proud. I won't settle and I will be the beacon of light in a dark world like you said I am. I will shed tears, but be thankful that I know you are watching over me. I will live by your words, "Everyday is holiday and every meal is a banquet -- Every man and woman like a king and Queen -- in the land of milk and honey -- Where the sun never sets me the moon always shines -- it's just another opportunity to discover new ways to better serve my fellow man and make tomorrow's day even better."

Rest In Peace, Daddy! I love you so much

The thing that stood out the most to me about Mikel, was even though he had so much other pressing matters to attend to back in 2014 when he accepted my connection request on LinkedIn and answered all my questions and encouraged my opinion and expression, he still had time to exchange thought and ideas.
My passion back then was to learn; his passion was to feed my curiosity which as a teacher I have inherited. I do what he did for me for my students. As a true authentic developer of learning, one must feed the curiosity as that is the driver for learning. But all in the mean time, I later found out, he did this on his death bed. What dedication, what passion, what selflessness.

Sharing

May 6, 2017

In February of 2013, Dr. Harry shared the Great Discovery, and principles of Six Sigma with a few members of the Arizona National Guard. Moreover, his gestures of kindness and willingness to share were humbling. I now treasure his efforts to support our Service Members. Dr. Harry had a vision and desire to enrich the fabric of us all, through Six Sigma, through The Great Discovery, through his friendship to all those who carry the spirit of service.

The brilliant of light of authentic patriotism shined in his eyes, reflecting the best of America’s ideals; making this world a better place. In my view, Mikel shined brightly the brilliance of America – goodness in action. A goodness founded in the virtues of cooperation and a sense of community. A community that believes the pursuit of happiness is best experienced as a joint venture of shared service, arduous work, and opportunities for all; and Mikel led the way.

From time to time that gracious light sines so that we see the panorama of America’s dream. From here freedom’s light illuminates our case and reflects the greatness of Americas legacy. Listen closely and you will hear “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” echoing on the wind, as he now breaths life under angles wings. With gratitude’s glow, we now gaze upon one Marine’s amazing impact on us all. Today the light of his visions transcends our hearts as soft shadows cast upon our beliefs, hopes, and dreams in America the Beautiful. Thank you, Mikel, my friend, for shining the light.

Remembering Mikel

May 6, 2017

I first met Mikel writing standards for IPC in late '80s (writing standards was where I met Bill Smith as well, EIA QRE).  We were working on IPC-PC-90 attempting to require companies to embrace Quality Improvement.  I had the chance to travel with Mikel around ther US  and Eurpoe and present methodologies and eventually he hired me to help implement/deploy six sigma for ABB (Power T&D, where I met Zinkgraf).  Next thing I know he and Rich were off to AliedSignal...where he brought 'Z' and me along...and we added Gary to the fold).  It was a wild ride with some great stories.  Mikel was very persuasive and seldom lost an argument.  He did much to convince several CEO's to implement six sigma and thus influence a generation.  Although there were many times we disagreed with approach, deployment and even tools, he was extremely passionate.  Funny, I never heard him talk about father or godfather of six sigma, but I do recal him calling himself the John Wayne of Quality.  Rest in Peace, Mikel.

The Emotive Storyteller

April 29, 2017

In order to win someone over to your cause, you must first reach their heart, the great and high road to their mind... this is what Doc did for me during one of the last Executive Master Black Belt classes that he taught in 2017.

Mikel's capacity to reflect upon and share with the class, the myriad challenges and successes that he encountered, as he worked with the executives of Motorola, General Electric and Allied Signal, enabled me to see the world through his eyes, and that we must continue to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield, until the goal has been achieved.

Rest in Peace Doc...
