His Life

Summer 2006

March 18, 2015
My friendship with Jung-Min started almost a decade ago, in the summer of 2006. We were both sent to Beijing by Thomson Reuters to set up the data operations center there, alongside many others. It was a unique season.   In our first weekend there, we explored the ancient city together. I remember sizing up this big Korean guy and wondered if he was “any good”.
To my delight, I found that he liked to eat and talk, did not mind me getting us lost and was married. I knew then that this friend was a keeper. Plus, he was really easy to please. For him, ordinary food tasted great, great cuisine tasted “ this is AMAZING!” and amazing delicacies were “this is AWESOME!” Food always tasted better around him.
Even 10 years later, he still talked about the noodles we had for our very first hotpot together. He is such sentimental person who takes great delight in simple things.   Living in the same service apartment, taking cabs to and from work, working out and hanging out with Min and Erin daily was good fun. There is never a shortage of good stories from him and with him.   Very early on, Min made it his mission to chaperone my love life. He would often ask “Do you have a boyfriend?” I would always say “no” and he would look like a sad puppy. And then he would ask again a few days later.  Finally, one day I said to him, “maybe.. would you like to vet him for me?” He looked like he hit the jackpot. And of course the rest is history. Some might have questioned my wisdom in asking Min, coz he’s not the most disagreeable person. But I knew he loved me as a friend. That’s enough, and he clearly did right by me. :)   Working alongside him in TR and Morningstar over the last 10 years was great. He was my best friend at work. I’ve not had one before him, and I’m not sure I will have another one after him.
He was always a wild card and it’s hard to predict what would come out of his mouth. I affectionately say, “he asked the most inappropriate questions” and say the “darnest things”. He had this positive energy that was infectious, and everything was a “can-do-it” with him, no matter how difficult the task at hand was, even when he was fighting his epic battle with MDS.

I'm missing you a ton tonight, Min!

Epic Battle Day One and Two (Oct 2014)

February 10, 2015

Hi everyone,

Two updates from me in a week!

Min’s doing well with the chemo these 2 days, it does not seem like there are very many side effects at this point. Fingers crossed!

From Erin – “People have been soooo generous sending us gift cards and meals and many other things”..  That’s YOU – so thank you!

Subject: Min's Epic Battle: Day One!

Hi everyone,

Min checked into the hospital yesterday to begin his treatment, and today marks the first of 8 days of intensive chemotherapy. After which, he will receive the bone marrow transplant.

It is positive because it is the start of another phase in this journey to recovery, scary because of the risks involved and difficult because he will not be able to see and hold his children in person for 5 weeks. But as he said in his latest blog post (http://posthope.org/mins-epic-battle), he will fight the best fight he can because there is so much more he wants to do! His will and optimism will go a long way in the tough times. So let’s continue to hope with and pray for his family!

Epic Battle Early Days (June-Aug 2014)

Hi everyone,

Many of you might have wondered at some point in the last few weeks – “How’s Min? Has he had the bone marrow transplant yet?” And a few of you might even have been lucky enough to catch him during his surprise visit to the office!

Min was scheduled to start his transplant last Tuesday Aug 5th. However, due to inflammation that they found earlier in his liver, the doctors wanted to keep monitoring to ensure that it’s nothing serious. Thankfully, no bacteria or virus was identified through the liver biopsy. So if all goes well (fingers crossed, as the docs are a little concerned about his high blood pressure and slight cold), the new transplant data will be next Wednesday Aug 20th (Day -8). What that means is –

On that day (Day-8), he will get checked into the hospital, undergo more severe chemotherapy to prepare his body for the transplant. On Day 0, he will receive stem cells from his brother. On Day +1, he will receive his son’s cord blood stem cells.

Min has been trying to stay as positive as he can. But there are times when the side effects from the medication (breaking out in cold sweat mid day), constant fatigue and the weight of the (implications of the) transplant take a toll on him. Nonetheless, he is enjoying all the time he has with his family, friends and food J.

This has been a long arduous journey, do continue to hope with us that things will get better every day! In the words of his wife, Erin –

Please keep sending the love, prayers, and good wishes everyone. I'm so hoping this transplant process will go smoothly and Min won't have any crazy complications. We need to see him well again one day very soon! Lots of love from all of us to all of you - cheesy as it is, you are the wind beneath our wings :)

If you look forward to more frequent posts on Min’s condition, do check out this blog that Erin keeps – http://posthope.org/mins-epic-battle/update/167875/new-transplant-date

Take care now, and have a good weekend.

Cheers,

Jo

Subject: An update from Min

 Hi everyone,

Thanks for your conscientious concern for Min, and for reaching out to me at different times.

My sincere apologies for any delay in getting back to you. Moving house and a bunch of back to back travels has slowed me down more than I thought it would! Instead of writing to you about Min, I thought you might like to hear from the man himself! So here is an update from him -

After the first chemo therapy, I went through tough times. At least 3 hospital stays, crazy inflammations popping up all over my body and extreme fatigue due to low key blood count numbers. 3 months after the first chemo, finally the numbers began turning around! I actually felt little better with extra energy and enjoyed a couple of weekends with my family and friends.

Doctors decided to go ahead with the second chemo therapy to improve the numbers even further. Unfortunately though, the same struggles from the first chemo side effects continue. Last 5 weeks, I had to check into the hospital twice for urgent blood transfusions, and overall going through extreme tiredness daily due to very low blood count numbers (doctors thought that blood counts will improve a lot quicker from the second chemo than the first one, but that is not happening).

We are hoping blood counts will improve as soon as possible. Once that improves, many other good things will follow – appetite will come back, more energy to move around, and finally a to get my esophagus open top enjoy some non-soft or non-liquid foods!!!

A couple of weeks back, my younger brother came from Korea to help me out! Well, not only he is going to be a great help for a next few months, he is the donor! We will try to get as healthy as possible together. I felt so sorry that he had to stay in the hospital with me only a day after he arrived from Korea for my emergency blood transfusion, but I can tell you that I was very glad to have him there with me.

The big day (stem cell transplant) is still scheduled around early July. Considering all the side effects I went through with chemo therapies, we will not do any further treatment. Now, it all depends on how fast my blood counts improve – once the numbers are good enough, we will get ready for the transplant.

One thing for sure, Erin and I are still in very positive spirits. Frustrated here and there, but we know we can beat this! Also, with everyone’s constant and endless help, things are definitely easier. THANK YOU!!!

Take care,

Jo
