His Life

Pilgrim and NCC

He later joined the administrative staff at Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center in 1974, and began teaching at Nassau Community College. He retired in 2005, but continued pursuing the activities he loved, part-time teaching Chemistry at Nassau Community College, and was an active member of VSNA/VSNY for more than 25 years. He is survived by his wife, two children, 3 grandchildren, 7 brothers and 2 sisters and 26 nieces/nephews.

His legacy extends beyond his immediate family, for more than 50 years he worked to support his family both in the U.S. and in India.  Through his efforts, he has provided educational opportunities for so many of us.  We are forever grateful and honored to have had him in our lives.

Adelphi University, Garden City

He pursued postgraduate studies at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. After successful completion of his PhD, he stayed on as teaching faculty in the Chemistry department.

Mumbai

He taught as a junior professor at Parle College in Mumbai for two years. In 1964, he was awarded a fellowship from Adelphi University to pursue his PhD in Physical Chemistry, and he came to the United States.

 

Linga Raj College

He attended high school in Bailhongal while living in Tippi Math boarding.  Later he matriculated to Linga Raj college while living in Nagarnur Math boarding. In 1960, while he was at college, he married Gangadevi Tallur.  He then graduated, with honors, from Karnataka University with an Masters of Science in Physical Chemistry. 

 

Sotnal

Mahadevappa Mallappa Kumbar was born in Tallur, Karnataka, India in 1939. Although his parents lived in Sotnal, Navalgund, in the Dharwar district, he grew up in Tallur with his grandparents.  He stayed there until he was 12.
