Mrs Kabeberi has been our neighbour for so many years I can’t quite remember how many. She was the epitome of good neighbourliness. We enjoyed visiting with her and Christine and listening to her stories of her work life and trips abroad. She was such a caring neighbour who would often summon for us when she hasn’t seen or heard from us for a while. We shall surely miss this wonderful woman of God. Rest in Peace dear Neighbour.

Today my brother Kimani and I stand before you to celebrate Tata Monica.

A special friend to our dear late Mummy. Their friendship was cultivated at African Girls High School now Alliance Girls High School and this only got stronger over the years into their retirement years. Just the other day you condoled with us Aunty Monica. We thank you!

Aunty Monica to us you were a woman who walked in God's love.
Reflecting the beauty of the Father above.
You were not defeated by things most women find tough.
A lovely woman whose was not just a pretty face
But a woman of God's Grace!


Aunty Monica was a woman who lived knowing she was headed to heaven in God's place.
A woman of good character, not better competence.
A woman who symbolised the goodness of God by her excellence.
A woman who prayed and cared deeply for all.
You walked with the Lord, Magnificent and devoted.


Today we pay tribute to a forever loved lovable leading lady.
who also helped us see the best in ourselves as we grew up.
A woman who was blessed. A woman of noble character like Ruth.
Who taught many of us here and especially  her family and those who knew her well, that only God was love and God was the ultimate truth.

We thank you! Mummy and the Arch angels await your homecoming.

I have known Monica for well over 47 years. We have lived in the same neighborhood and bought our homes as a group of determined civil servants.
Mama Monica was a great woman of faith, a cameo of courage, a great lover of family and friends and loved to tell stories. Mama Monica loved her God and was able to clearly state exactly what she believed. Her faith was unshakable even in very difficult times. Monica's life over the years offers one of the most dramatic cameos of courage from her days as a teacher, career civil servant, a women rights champion, as a widow, a great mother to many children and in her later years through health challenges. Her love for her family and great bond of friendship with different age groups is uniquely remarkable. Monica loved to tell stories about Kanyariri, her school days, etc. From her and her two friends---Penina Ngugi and Nelly Kairu (fondly referred to as the three masketeers) I learned a lot. Remarkable! There is no other word to describe Monica Wamaitha wa Kabeberi's life. I cannot end without acknowledging the great care and love that her children have showered their mother with, especially her latter years. I guess the Bible is fulfilled: "You reap what you sow". Monica sowed great love and care for her children. Lie in peace my friend, mentor and cheerleader.

I have such fond memories of Mrs. Kabeberi, a great friend of my mother. We were constantly in each others houses as young kids, moms in the sitting room talking into the wee hours while we danced to songs like Kweli Musa, being led by Christine who was a superb dancer. No occasion was complete if the Kabeberis were not there. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Tribute to Auntie Monicah Kabeberi:

The Kairo family remembers Auntie Monicah with deep fondness. She had a very bubbly, infectious personality that endeared her to everyone. When we organized our mother’s 79th surprise birthday party we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Auntie Monicah had everyone’s contact information saved on her phone. She was a real people person and a natural organizer.

Our mothers attended primary and high school together and were both teachers at Kambui Teacher’s College. They were best of friends. In fact Auntie Monicah was the first person to tell us the story about how they used to use slates (thilate) as exercise books and wipe clean their lessons with their own saliva. Amazing!

The late Peter Kamau Kabeberi met and fell in love with Monicah at the Kairo’s home in Bahati.

For a while Auntie Monicah and our mother lost touch due to travel and family commitments but they managed to reconnect years later and picked up their relationship without skipping a beat, which brought them even closer. Auntie Monicah’s smile, laugh, humor and love of life will be sorely missed.

May God rest her soul in eternal peace and may God watch over the Kabeberi family in their time of sorrow.
