His Life
May 28, 2016

Nelson Floyd, Sr. was born on February 3, 1934 to Roy and Musie Finch Floyd in Salem, Alabama. On Thursday, May 26, 2016, God summoned him from the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama to a home of eternal rest.

Nelson accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at any early age and was a faithful member of the St. Stephens C.M.E. Church where he was a devoted Trustee and a former Steward. He served diligently in the church until his health declined.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Rosie Mae Ashford, and this union was blessed with seven children.

After 40 plus years of service, Mr. Floyd retired from West Point Stevens. Not only was he a working man, Nelson was a praying man and a family man. He led by example. Brother Floyd showed his love for God and his family as he lived each day. He was a courageous man who stood proudly for what he believed. He didn’t have a formal education, but was wise beyond his years. Nelson encouraged his children and others to get an education and reach for the stars. He loved gardening and sharing his crops with others. Nelson was always willing to lend a helping hand – touching the lives of many who knew him. “Granddaddy” and “Big Daddy”, as he was affectionately known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often expressed his love for God through hymns, songs of praise and prayer.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Rosie, daughter, Kia Shontez; foster daughter, Shunda Evans; and, two brothers, Roy Floyd, Jr. and Exer Lee Floyd.

A lifetime of memories will be cherished by his loving children; four sons, Jerry (Elizabeth) Floyd, Valley, AL, Nelson (Cinderella ) Floyd, Jr., Charlie Floyd and Tony (Sadie) Floyd all of Salem, AL; two daughters, Frances Staples and Dorothy (Danny) Adkins both of Salem, AL; two brothers, Arthur (JoAnn) Floyd, Sr. and David (Lottie) Floyd, Sr. both of Valley, AL; three sisters, Affie Chambers and Edith Coleman both of Valley, AL and Ida Floyd, Chicago, IL; son-in-law, Paul Evans, Salem, AL; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ashford, Smiths Station, AL; brothers-in-law, Henry Thomas , Columbus, GA and Lee James (Yolanda) Core, Opelika, AL; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
