For Shauna, this is Mom.
We remember her as if it were yesterday.

Remember Me

My spirit has gone to my Maker,
But I'm still with you.
When a gentle wind swirls around
That's me embracing you
When the sunlight makes you glow
That's me smiling with you
When the hurricane roars
That's me chastising you.
In the drought remember
the hard times we endured
When the rains fall gently,
When the skies are Caribbean blue,
When the hills are green and the flowers bloom,
Remember the good times we shared
Remember me
I'm still with you

Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Today is the day you began your earthly journey. Dear Myrna, we remember that day as long as we are here.

A willing hand - an active mind
Anxious to please - loath to offend,
A loving sister and faithful friend

I did not have the words 2 years ago, and I still don't but I'll try anyway.

There were many traits I admired about you Auntie Myrna, admired silently, but the foremost was your gentle heart. Amid the exuberant Caribbean-American family of ours where we love loud and hard, that trait was rather lovely.

I admired your kindness, your gentle voice, your gentle joy, stubbornness, and strength. I remember it.

God Bless you Auntie Myrna.

I met Myrna briefly through her daughter, Shauna, whom I'm proud to call a friend. As the saying goes, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." They are both truly wonderful people. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to pay my respects at the lovely service today, and I enjoyed "meeting" the friends and family who have been a part of their lives for so many years.

Thank you for allowing us to share stories of your mother's gifts: kindness, tenacity and knowledge. She was truly special and will be missed. In addition, thank you for the virtual service, providing an opportunity to express and share our love for Myrna. A great asset to Howard University touching and teaching numerous lives. Mryna exemplified the epitome of a servant-leader, excellency through service! She will always be in my heart until we meet again.

Myrna was a great friend and a great mentor. We spent many times together in the microbiology lab (as: student, researcher and faculty member). Whenever I had a High School student who was more interested in the microbes than in immunology, I would call on her for support. The microbiology lab was one of the places that I took my children's middle school class and she made the visit so exciting for them that they wanted to become scientists, only to accept that scientists did not make much money and thus minds were changed :)) (laugh!!). I missed her for oh so long!! Rest in peace, dear friend.

Dear Myrna:
We became friends as students at Howard University; and became closer after graduation.
Our lives became closely interwoven when both families moved to "Tanterra".
We moved away and were separated by miles, but you were always close to our hearts.
Your kind, sweet and gentle personality will always be cherished and remembered.
We will be here for Shauna (our goddaughter).
FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

I was a member of the Department of Microbiology faculty from 1974-1993 and had the pleasure of working with Ms. Stupart. She was the ultimate professional and always, with a smile and soft words, would offer assistance whenever and wherever needed. I remember her and her daughter, Shauna, fondly, as for awhile we were also neighbors. May Myrna's soul rest with the angels in Glory. My condolences to her daughter, Dr. Shauna Stupart and to the rest of her family.

What can you say
to someone who has always been one of the most essential parts of your world;
Someone who took you by the hand when you were little and helped to show the way.

What do you say to someone who stood by to help you grow,
providing love, strength, and support so you could become the person you are today?

What can you say to let her know she’s the best there is,
and that you hope you’ve inherited some of her wisdom and strength?

What words would you say if you ever got the chance?

Maybe you’d just say, I love you mom and hope she understands...

You've been my sister for so many years,
We've laughed together and shed some tears.

We've had harsh words, and gone separate ways
But we made it back at the end of the day..

Time and space may separate us,
but heartstrings know no end.
God made us sisters, hearts made us friends
Rest in Peace dear Myrna until we meet again.

Rest in peace Auntie Myrna. Thank you for the love and inspiration. It was because of you that I chose to attend Howard University and even before that, I was inspired to study biochemistry because of your love for microbiology. We wait to see you again.

Her Life

Childhood

June 2, 2020
The oldest of four girls, Myrna was born to Gilbert and Doris Dixon on December 8, 1940 in Kingston, Jamaica.

She spent her early childhood with her grandparents at Coley Mountain Primary School. She then returned to her parents and sisters where she completed primary school before attending St. Hugh's High School in Kingston at the age of 12.

Professional life

June 2, 2020
Upon graduating St. Hugh's High School, she held a government position in Customs before bravely stepping into the next stage of her life, leaving Jamaica in 1964 to attend Howard University.

At Howard University she obtained her BSc and MSc in Microbiology in 1968 and 1970 respectively. She worked in various positions while in school including work as a research assistant. After graduating in 1968 she became the Supervisor of the Teaching Microbiology Laboratory and also became a member of the teaching staff in 1972. She enthusiastically performed both roles educating thousands of medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and allied health students until 2011.

Myrna was an active member of the American Society for Microbiology, American Society for the Advancement of Science, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology as well as many other organizations involved in the advancement of science.

Personal Life

June 2, 2020
Myrna met Clinton Stupart while working in Jamaica. He joined her at Howard University shortly after she began her studies in 1964. They married in 1965 and had daughter Shauna some years later.

Myrna loved volunteering and gave of her time whenever she could, sharing her passion for microbiology with local high school students and being active at her local church, library, museum, and hospital. She enjoyed the arts as much as the sciences and could frequently be found painting.

She was passionate about learning new things. She could always be found practicing or taking courses to learn more about new recipes, piano, gardening, and foreign languages.

To Shauna

Don and I are honored to address Shauna as a representative for her Mom. We have known Myrna for a very long time. We appreciated her views which she shared with a subtle smile. She was an arduous worker as we knew her at Howard University’s Microbiology lab. She was easy to figure out as a wonderful person who was willing to make one comfortable in her presence. I remember many days slipping down to the lab to have lunch with her by the garden.

Last time we saw her, she was with her lovely daughter, Shauna at a car show at the convention center. To see a mother and daughter at the show gave us the impression of a caring daughter who had unmistakable qualities of a wonderful upbringing. I know that she will be missed by everyone who knew her like we will.

Shauna, consider feeling grateful for her life on this sad occasion as she has paid her dues on earth and now is at rest with her heavenly father.
