Nancy Jean Hughes Sobolak, 84, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the home of her daughter. She was born in Vance County on January 21, 1934 to Alonzo Alexander Hughes and Ruby Cottrell Hughes.

Jean attended the Dabney and Oxford Schools, graduating from Oxford High School in 1952. She worked as a certified optometric assistant for 10 years, taught typing and shorthand at John Nichols School and was the administrative assistant to the principal. She retired as a senior purchasing agent from Nortel Networks after 15 years of service.

Jean was an active member of Oxford Baptist Church, the Lila Overby Sunday School Class, Women’s Missionary Union and the establisher of the Back Pack Ministry serving children in the Granville Co. schools. Jean also during her lifetime served as caregiver to several family members and friends and spent many hours in volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin siblings, Bobby L. Hughes and Betsy Hughes Clayton and by her brother-in-law Wilbur L. Clayton.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Tim Sobolak of the home, daughter Claudia Michelle “Shelley “ Hight of Oxford, nieces Kim Clayton Price and June Clayton Ellington of Oxford, Dana Hughes Patton of Phoenix, AZ and a nephew, Lee Clayton of Oxford.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 12:00 PM at the Eakes Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. A private burial will be held at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, February 23,2018 at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.

Flowers or donations to the Back Pack Ministry of Oxford Baptist Church, PO Box 398, Oxford NC 27565 or Granville Co. Animal Shelter, 5650 Cornwall Rd, Oxford, NC 27565 are welcomed.
